A REAL-WORLD TEST

Sometimes the job begins where the road ends. Hauling 20 tons through a cramped jobsite over rugged terrain demands purpose-built equipment and nerves of steel. WorkStar® has been designed and engineered for operation in relentless conditions. Proprietary Navistar® N13 power, heavy duty steel cab, huck-bolted frames and integral front frame extensions ensure the load gets through. And features like the large, comfortable, quiet cab, tight turning radius and available high-visibility sloping hood help reduce driver stress and fatigue.

To back up this claim, we put WorkStar to a real-world test — against real-life competitors. A test conducted by an independent third party of trucking professionals.

The tests were conducted with the highest level of objectivity. Meticulous attention was paid to detail. Measurements were taken from actual production vehicles.

Specifications, as closely as possible, were matched to each competitive model. And most importantly, in order to maintain absolute consistency, measurements were performed in precisely the same manner across all models.

How does the WorkStar stack up in the real world? We urge you to study the enclosed data. It’s your opportunity to find out for yourself.

COMPETITIVE SET

In real-world testing, WorkStar® was compared cab-to-cab, axle-to-axle, powertrain-to-powertrain, measurement-to-measurement against three leading market competitors: the Freightliner 114SD, the Kenworth T800 and the Mack Granite®.

Everything you essentially need to know about them … engines, transmissions, axles, suspensions, cab sizes, visibility, and warranties … “is in the comparisons.”

Given some differences in design and component availability, no two competitive trucks on the road are absolutely identical. But in order to guarantee a meaningful comparison, the trucks included in our comparative guide share matching specifications as closely as possible.

Cab entry and egress and the design of the cab steps and grab handles is crucial in ensuring a safe and productive work environment for the driver – steps that are too steep or inconsistently spaced can be a hazard and cause injuries. WorkStar’s steps and grab handles are designed for a proper 3-point cab entry.

WorkStar® Cab Steps

Large surface area and is among the most consistently spaced for safe, predictable entry

An offset, stair-step design provides a stable access platform

Adjacent steps in an offset, stair-step design are much easier for the driver to see than ladder type steps

WorkStar has the greatest degree of step offset at over 6"— better than any of these competitors

Grab Handles

Well positioned, ergonomically designed grab handles are available in several different configurations:

Interior or exterior, A-pillar / B-pillar, LH or RH side

Chrome, with optional anti-slip rubber inserts, black or Safety Yellow interior handles

Step OffsetA greater step offset creates a more natural, stair-step cab access and allows the driver to see more of the step from above. A smaller offset creates a more vertical, ladder-type cab access with less of the ground step visible from above.

Grab-Handle Length is determined by measuring the entire length of the graspable portion of the grab handle.

Visibility is vital to driver safety and worker productivity and is essential in preventing damage to the vehicle or other equipment operating in the area. Poor sight lines — especially in congested areas like job sites or within the narrow confines of a winding road — add stress and strain on the driver while reducing productivity.

Many things affect visibility:

 Hood shape and slope

 Windshield design

Positioning of pillars, wipers, mirrors and hood ornaments

Height and design of the fenders and door glass

WorkStar® provides excellent sight lines and is competitive in all areas. With the available sloped hood, driver’s straight ahead visibility is especially good and is nearly three feet better than the T800. Driver’s side visibility measured better than both competitors at all points measured.

Visibilty Methodology

A position in space is found within the cab of each vehicle based on established standards relative to the positioning of equipment within each vehicle. This position represents the driver’s eye point of an average size (5'10" person), as seated in a natural, comfortable position. This position remains constant across all vehicles relative to each vehicle’s equipment.

Ranging points are projected at regular intervals from the driver’s eye point as represented by the noted variables within the diagram. These intervals vary in degree of separation depending on positioning of vehicle cab glass, hood shape, dash shape and pillar positioning, etc. The point at which the projection becomes visible at ground level represents the closest that point becomes visible to the driver.

CAB SIZE

The WorkStar® demands attention and rightfully so. Its powerful stance, commanding presence and military experience exude capability. The comfort that lies within isn’t so obvious – until the door is opened. The cab is well trimmed, functional and one of the most spacious on the job. A comfortable driver is a safe and productive driver.

Interior width at the shoulders is wider than all three competitors and over a foot wider than the T800

Forward interior width at the A-pillar is wider than the Granite® and nearly a foot wider than the T800

Rear width at the B-pillar is about 7" wider than the Granite and the T800

Cab depth from the accelerator pedal to the back wall is deeper than the 114SD and nearly 5" deeper than the T800

Cab height beats the 114SD at all three points measured

Flat Cab Floor

A flat cab floor provides the necessary platform for convenient and efficient installation of auxiliary equipment controls and housing assemblies

Cab design and wide variety of seating configurations provide plenty of floor space between seats

The 114SD’s cab floor rises dramatically between and under the seats – obstructing access and complicating equipment installation

Cab Measurement Methodology

All vehicle measurements were obtained by the same personnel, in the same manner, at the same interior reference points throughout every cab.

Measurements were obtained using an extremely accurate digital range meter. Measurements were rounded to the nearest .25" to allow for material differences, manufacturing tolerances and trim component textures.

Driver Comfort

International® trucks are designed for operating in the harshest environments. The interior is designed to temper these extremes, whether it’s noise, terrain, temperature, or a combination of all three.

Tight lap joint tolerances ensure durability and provide the first defense against severe temperatures and loud noises on the job

Four-point cab mounts isolate cab from road noise and vibration

High-output HVAC system: 30,000 heating BTUs and 24,000 air conditioning BTUs

Available pre-filters and heavy particle filters further protect the air quality within the cab insulation available

Leg and Head Room

International is the only OEM that has developed a driver-specific proprietary database by actually measuring drivers. The dash layout, IP design, positioning of gauges, switches and steering wheel positioning is a result of those findings.

More vertical seat travel than any of the competitors

Leg room exceeds T800 and 114SD

Noise Level Methodology

Measurements were obtained with a Type-1 sound level meter over a 10-second period. Meter was positioned 1 meter above ground and 1 meter forward of grille during exterior measurements. Measurements were conducted with a warm engine, 50’ from any reflective surface and wind speeds below 12 mph. Engine fans and HVAC systems were switched off.
