Paul gives up his time to scrutineer our competition cars and then helps out in many other areas when extra help is required. Paul arrives at the track before 7am and is one of the last to leave, often not until 6pm. Paul does not have the word NO in his vocabulary.

THE DONALD HEALEY CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL TROPHY2017 RECIPIENT IS PETER KAISERFirst presented by Brian Healey in 1998At the AHOC committee meeting on 14 October 1998 it was decided

“That we instigate the Donald Healey Centennial Memorial Trophy to be awarded to the member who achieves

the most notable performance in non-club events over the year as judged by the committee.”

FROM AHOC “Basic Rules and Information”“The Donald Healey Trophy is awarded on a purely subjec-tive basis driven by one’s actvities in using an Austin Healey in some outstanding manner in open competition. Past winners have generally campaigned their Healeys in open track races or Classic Adelaide or Targa Tasmania or other such events. Selection is most often based on good results or an outstanding showing in strong, more modern competition and/or persistence and good sportsmanship in these circum-stances.”PAST WINNERS 1998 Rob Rowland 1999 Bill Ingham 2000 Brian Dermott 2001 John Moore 2002 Geoff Leake 2003 Peter Kaiser2004 Rob Rowland 2005 Geoff Leake 2006 John Goodall 2007 Paul & Christine Freestone 2008 Peter Jackson 2009 Steve Pike 2010 Peter Jackson 2011 Peter Jackson2012 Peter Jackson 2013 Peter Jackson 2014 Peter Jackson 2015 Brian Duffy 2016 Graeme Marks 2017 Peter Kaiser

SOME THANK YOUSTHANK YOU TO the Team Healey competitors for support-ing our Championships with beautifully presented and well driven cars from an era of diminishing numbers. Old drivers, old cars. It is not easy, or inexpensive, to campaign these old cars and your continued efforts to show that the Aus-tin Healey Owners Club of Victoria is a strong competition club are very important and much appreciated. THANK YOU TO our supporters who regularly attend events where we are competing, adding to the atmosphere and enjoy-ment in the Team Healey gathering. In particular, our annual Winton 12 Hour Relay brings out the very best in our club and makes me, as your competition secretary very proud. You might be surprised to know that our Team Healey driv-ers email list numbers 45 present, a few potential and several immediate past competitors (I never give up hope some will return!) The Team Healey supporters email list numbers 50 members and is by no means complete. So at least 100 members of our total primary membership of 340 or so show a pleasing level of interest in our competition activities.THANK YOU TO David Kelly, Selwyn Hall and Terry Wade who give their time to officiate at MSCA events in the control tower. Thank you also to Paul McPherson and Bill Metcalf who answered the call for more volunteers and have qualified as CAMS scrutineers.

DO YOU WANT TO TRY COMPETITION?Contact your Competition secretary for information on how to put your Big Healey, Sprite or other Marque car on the track and join us at Team Healey. It is not hard to get started. I will email you all the information you need. You can do an MSCA Come and Try day or jump right in and enter Regularity or Sprints at an MSCA event.

COMPETITION REPORT GEELONG REVIVAL MOTORING FESTIVAL 26 November 2017This report thanks to information supplied by Bill Metcalf and Eric Patterson.Healeys are always well represented at this standing quarter mile sprint along the Geelong waterfront at Eastern Beach. Terry Wills-Cooke, Eric Patterson, Ian Jones, Max Hooper and Trent Bantow have flown the Healey flag for some years now and the rivalries look set to continue. This year the public road was a bit damp and lacked grip for the first three runs – there is a noticeable bend in the track halfway down which has caught many unawares in years gone by but the dry fourth and last run determined the final results which wereProduction Sports Cars 1941 to 1972 2001 to 4000cc, no logbook1st 14.3707 sec Ian Jones Austin Healey BT7 4th 15.2893 Max Hooper1959 Austin Healey (3.8 alloy litre) 5th 15.6910 Eric Patterson 1966 Austin Healey6th 17.0011 Trent Bantow1962 Austin HealeyAn MGB V8 and an MGB filled second and third places.Production Sports Cars 1941-1977 CAMS log Booked Group S 2001 cc and over1st 16.8732 sec Terry Wills-Cooke 1964 Austin Healey driven by Ken SadlerIan Jones was happy with the win but unable to match son Evan’s time of 13.8430 last year – surely the damp track was the problem!Max Hooper in his wild and loud alloy 3.8 Healey (developed by Max and the late Dave Woodhouse) did a 13.28 versus Evan Jones at 13.84 last year but this year Max left after 2 runs while the track was still damp, missing his chance in the dry.Eric Patterson did a 15.1 in 2016 and had high hopes for a sub 15 second run but the conditions thwarted Eric too. Eric chatted about his intense but friendly rivalry with Terry Wills-Cooke at the Christmas lunch. Terry was not present to defend himself. Bill Metcalf mentioned in his email that Eric calls Terry “Tardy Terry”. Eric does not deny this. In fact Eric remembers giving Terry a trophy several years ago for “Fastest Healey BJ8 – Diesel Class” in reference to the black exhaust smoke from Terry’s car that year under hard acceleration. Eric claims they then agreed that the loser each year would present the winner with a trophy. Terry, Eric complains that you owe him four trophies! It sounds like they are having a lot of fun. Normally Terry’s car would be in the same class as the other

Healeys but perhaps an administrative error was made because we do not think the Healey is CAMS log booked Group S. Eric wants you back in the correct class next year Terry so he can beat you fair and square. Unfortunately, Terry was unable to drive at the last minute and enlisted AHOC member Ken Sadler from Warrnambool to compete instead. Ken was reluctant to follow Terry’s instructions “Give her 5000rpm and dump the clutch” but still managed to go sub 17 seconds and hand it back intact.Steve Pike came home with first place in the ex Hugh Purse Lister Jaguar replica in the Sports, Specials and Racing Cars class with a blistering best run of 12.8972. Steve must be delighted to be offered a chance to fettle and oc-casionally run the car, that he built, for its new owner.Evan Jones ran Ian’s Fraser Clubman with a best run of 13.1367 seconds.

A CLOSING THOUGHT

I finally got my head together and now my body is falling apart.

Cheers, Rod Vogt
