    1. ACCLXT Continuing Competence Program

Continuing Competence Program is a system of assessing, maintaining and monitoring ongoing knowledge, skills, attitudes and critical judgments of a

professional health care practitioner. It is a way of ensuring a high level of expertise, competence and appropriate ethics in performing the job.

Competency is defined as the quality of being functionally proficient in performing the tasks and assuming the role of a specified position with the requisite knowledge, ability, capability, skill, judgment, attitudes and values.

The Health Professions Act (2000) defines competence as the “combined knowledge, skills, attitudes and judgment required to provide professional services.”

A Competency Profile is a detailed and specific description of the knowledge, skills, behaviors and critical judgments inherent in the role, trade or profession.

There are three good reasons to develop a Continuing Competence Program for Alberta Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologists (CLXT):

    1. Every profession is responsible to serve the public in a competent and ethical manner. The Alberta College of Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologists, in its regulatory capacity, has a mandate to protect the public good, specifically, through ensuring the competency of technologists in the provision of health care services.

    2. Each professional has the responsibility to assess his / her own performance and to

maintain his / her competence. Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologists have a long and proud history of providing safe and quality services, and using continuing education to stay current and to improve services.

    3. The Health Professions Act requires all regulated health professions to have a

responsible, accountable and formal means of assessing and reporting the continuing competence of its members. All health professions are required to establish a Continuing Competence Program, to set up a Competence Committee, and report to Alberta Health and Wellness.

    2. Confidentiality and Privacy

his completed Competency Self-Assessment Form must be kept confidential in accordance with the Alberta Health Professions Act (2000). Data collected by the

College in the self-assessment process may only be used in an aggregate format wherein the confidentiality of the individual data is maintained, except where allowed or required under the Health Professions Act (HPA).

The data collected on this Self-Assessment Form will not be shared with your employer.

The data collected with this Self-Assessment Form cannot be used for conduct or disciplinary action or for any other purposes, except as provided for in Section 51.1 and 53 of the HPA. Please refer to the HPA for more information.

    3. Instructions 3.1 General

he Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologists’ Competency Profile was developed by a working group of experienced CLXTs with the help of Alberta

Health and Wellness and outside consultants. The Profile was validated by other members of the profession. Therefore, ACCLXT believes that this Competency Profile represents an accurate picture of the knowledge, skills, attitudes and critical judgments required by a regulated Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist working in Alberta.

No one technologist is required to possess ALL the competencies described in the Competency Profile. Each technologist will possess a set of competencies specific to his/her setting or practice. In addition, the degree of proficiency of each competency will vary with different technologists.

Competencies seen to be “advanced” and gained specifically through additional training or experience are identified in the ACCLXT Competency Profile by shading. If these competencies apply to your work, rate as you would all competency areas; otherwise check “Not Applicable” (NA). Advanced competencies in this Self-Assessment Form are shaded as well.

This Competency Self-Assessment Form is a systematic and organized method to identify your learning / professional development needs. You can then use the data and the exercise to plan a continuing education program so that you can remain current in your profession.

This Competency Self-Assessment Form is used to establish your Learning Plan. Your Learning Plan must be completed annually as a condition of renewal of your ACCLXT registration. The College will compile data into aggregate reports to identify learning needs for the profession. A report will be prepared and submitted annually to Alberta Health and Wellness.

If you have any problems or questions concerning the Continuing Competence Program or need help completing this Competency Self-Assessment Form and / or your Learning Plan, please contact the ACCLXT office.

  • 3.2 Completing this Self-Assessment Form

    1. Read through the Competency Profile, particularly the introduction pages, before

you start to fill out this Self-Assessment. The latest version of the Profile can be found in the Library section of www.acclxt.com .

    2. For each competency element, rate yourself using the following scale:

NA = Not applicable. The knowledge, skills, attitudes and critical judgments within this competency DO NOT apply to me in my current practice.

DEV = Developmental. This competency needs to be developed because I am NEW to

this area of the profession, or because I may wish to change or expand my professional role and responsibilities, or because I need to improve my knowledge, skills, attitudes and critical judgments.

COM = Competent. I have the knowledge, skills, attitudes and critical judgments to

adequately meet all the requirements for this competency. I function independently, providing high quality laboratory and x-ray services and client care.

DTE = Desire to Enhance. Even though I am already competent, I would like to

further enhance my knowledge, skills, attitudes and critical judgments in this competency area to reach the Advanced level.

ADV = Advanced. I excel at this competency and have more than basic knowledge,

skills, attitudes and critical judgments related to this area of professional practice. I would be confident to mentor others in this competency area.

    3. In determining your ratings, remember that you are assessing your own practice to

identify your learning needs. Ask yourself – is this competency required in my current practice? How well do I perform this competency?

    4. At the end of each section (A, B, C…), there is room for comments or notes to

yourself as you complete the Self-Assessment. These may help you to compile the overall summary for the Learning Plan.

    5. A Self-Assessment Form is available in the Library section if you wish to review it prior to completing the on-line assessment.

    6. Next, proceed to the Learning Plan section where you will describe what you plan to do this year to address your learning and professional developmental needs.
