Smedley I was looking forward to setting Fire Station at the end of the year, and had

already set my first round when it came to do the first field check. Unfortunately a call to the land owner found that they would be in the middle of lambing right when the event was on. This led to some restructuring and eventually Smedley West was settled as the location for my event.

My first set of courses were basically scraped, as the forest I had planed to use was covered in tree clippings and no course could be run through it. A quick re-scope of the courses and my second field check came along. The torrential rain that came with this did not dampen the spirits. A change of event centre, along with a few finishing touches, and the courses were ready to go.

The day before the event was again torrential rain when Dad and I had to put out controls, but thankfully the day of the event dawned fine. A quick put out of the control boxes, toilet hole dug, and caravan into position and we were set for the masses. Unfortunately, the masses didn’t arrive but those who did hopefully enjoyed themselves.

I hope the courses weren’t too unpleasing: there were a few mis-punches and DNF’s, but I tried to make them reasonably challenging. It was good to see Hamish Goodwin beating the young whippersnappers in the Red Long, seeing Callum being beaten is always pleasing ;).

It looks as though my Fire Station courses will be used early 2014, so you can look forward to my 1.2km long legs to come! Devon Beckman

EIT—NGHS fundraiser Somehow Cryn Russell and myself managed to convince the bosses at EIT that

a really good team building exercise for the overworked and underpaid staff would be an orienteering day. So we very quickly organised the EIT fundraiser that would run all day for the staff and then into the evening for the club and the public. The Friday the Thirteenth fundraiser was going to be for Vida Fox, Brianna Massie and Georgia Creagh who were selected to compete in Australia.

Well, the dawn brought a beautiful sunny day and we set up the loop event that Kim Creagh had to hastily set and Vida vet. Of course we had a loop as we expected that we would have hundreds of staff and students wanting to compete and with a loop we could start them all (I mean, why wouldn’t they, its orienteering!) Over 70 EIT staff competed and the fastest time overall was 19:07.

While EIT was handing out prizes and having drinks and nibbles in a small prize giving the real race began. Nearly 60 club members and public turned out and ran the loop as the sun was setting. The fastest time of the day was Devon Beckman who sizzled around the course in 10.45.

EIT loved the event and have said that they would like to do it again, and it’s a coincidence, I hope, but the boss won it. The Crèche at EIT loved the event as all the little kids did the course (some twice!) and they had a ball. The club loved the event (I mean, why wouldn’t they, its orienteering!) and of course I loved it as it raised over $1200 for the girls. I would like to thank the club for supporting this fundraiser and all those people who are always so generous with their time. Tim Creagh

9 Lower Tukituki

Term Three came and passed with a rush and it took a little bit of organisation to fit in the initial trips to the area.

I thought I would use the Haumoana side of the river at first, but the incessant whine of motorbikes racing up and down the shingle roads was rather off putting, especially when com-bined with some major earthworks and tree removal the council had done since the map was last used. Then having decided that the Havelock end of the map looked interesting, it was for-tunate that we were able to access the road end for on site parking.

Steve was exceptional as a vetter, and he made sensible suggestions, knowing the rule book in and out for the placing of the sport idents. Any errors in the placement and mapping were all mine as I scrib-bled down illegible notes on our travels around the course. Thanks to Geoff for suggesting a memory course for the red runners, most people seemed happy on the day and some of the yellow runners were envi-ous. Phillip Herries was wonderful with the caravan, bringing it to the site, and then digging the toilet while we were out putting in the base plates and standing up the stakes.

I had my reservations when the farmer said the cattle were quiet, but they were such placid cattle it took a bit to move them from some of the sites, we obviously all liked the same spots. The knolls on the yellow course had to have it replaced three times before the start!

Everybody who helped was greatly appreci-ated as were the caravan and collectors. Many thanks for the help by all involved and I hope most people enjoyed the day, even though it was hot and we couldn’t put the water at the finish as the cattle would have played with it. Heather Jones

11 Ranui—OY 7 + Red Kiwi Challenge + Frank Smith

One of the immediately appealing things about setting an event at Ranui Farm Park was that it was still a new map, only used once before for the club champs last year. It is lovely open HB farmland, hills and gullies, scattered trees and a few smaller forested areas. The event was an OY long but had also been picked for the annual inter-club Frank Smith Trophy and Red Kiwi Challenge, so there was a bit of pressure to produce some decent courses.

Being mostly open farmland, it wasn’t an easy map to provide red level navigational challenges. I picked out the areas that could be used for more detailed navigation and put in some long route choice legs for the longer courses and attempted to string them all together. I was also keen on the idea of throwing runners into some detailed navigation right at the start – hence the first few forest controls. Getting people a bit rattled at the start if they are not con-centrating is a good way of sorting everyone out!

Getting the course lengths right was a bit of a struggle. I initially wanted to have the finish back by the café/carpark area but couldn’t make it work within the course length restric-tions without compromising the courses I’d spent hours poring over. It would also have meant a steep climb to the finish at the end of the courses, which would have won me no friends, so I elected to have a bit of a walk back to the event centre.

We just needed a bit of fine weather on the day. With a couple of minivans from Wel-lington and Palmy bringing the numbers up to just over 180, it all went pretty well. Having spent ages trying to get control sites just right on the route choice legs it’s a bit disappointing when lots of runners say “Oh I didn’t see that option” but at least some of them did!

I have to say the landowners at Ranui, the Ennor family, could not have been more helpful or accommodating. Thanks to Chris Howell for his time, advice and guidance as vetter, he finished the day wife collecting instead of control collecting when Catherine sprained her ankle badly and needed a hand to get back. Thanks also to the Rawnsley family, Jarrod Lobb, Pamela Morrison, Philip Herries, Dave Fisher and Helen and Caroline Howell who all helped out in various ways to make it a pretty successful day.

And commiserations for Hugh FF who left his GPS watch on top of his car when he left, eventually finding it in pieces 2 kms down the road. Mark Irwin

September Members of the Month: Trent/Ellis family

Louise and Craig- kids Matilda 10, Oscar 7 and Pippi 2 How long have you been involved in orienteering? We have been coming casually for around 5 years when our middle child Oscar (now 7) was still getting carried over fences in a sling. How did you get involved with orienteering? We heard from many of the club's enthusias-tic members how fantastic and fun it was, that you could get really muddy in scenic places, and of course that orien-teering was thinking exer-cise! What do you remember about your first event? We remember our daughter Matilda aged about 5 getting bogged. She was standing up to her thighs in mud screaming hysterically. To be honest she's the only one in the family who hasn't taken to it!!! What courses do you usually run? Run would be exaggerating! We are usually sauntering behind our children with our youngest Pippi (2) on the hip, usually white or yellow. We are looking forward to Oscar doing courses independently and not to have to carry any little ones up steep hills when their legs stop work-ing. We are looking forward to getting lost on more challenging courses any day soon. What do you enjoy about orienteering? We love the different variety of courses in all sorts of beautiful Hawke's Bay venues, the satis-faction of seeing the kids work it out while exercising as well, and the club is so friendly, or-ganised and enthusiastic. Oscar loves the baking especially pink marshmellow slice. If we met you during the week, what would you be doing? Both hanging out at the hospital at all hours with quite a few other club members. What's the one thing you most regretted? Never any regrets :-)

21 October Members of the Month:

Dylan Kirk and Ray Miller How long have you be involved in orienteering? Since 2012 How did you get involved with Orienteering? R. I first became involved through transporting Dylan to events. I have been a runner most of my life so I decided I might as well have a go myself since I was going to be on site while he was out competing. D. I became involved with orienteering through Havelock North High. The main reason I signed up was because I enjoyed running and thought the map reading part looked challenging. What do you remember about your first event? R. It was much more difficult to make my way around the course successfully than I had antici-pated. However I did manage to beat Dylan for time on one sec-tion – in fact I was the fastest in the field on that day for that par-ticular section. This prompted some interesting comments when Dylan noticed this on the results that evening! D. My first event was the long on Maraetotara at North Island Sec-ondary Schools in 2012. I still remember this course very viv-idly because on my second con-trol (despite being told by Geoff not to follow anyone) I followed a person who wasn't doing my course and ended up getting lost for 56:44. I did though end up finishing the course in 1:26:05. What courses do you usually run? R. Yellow. I've set myself some goals to motivate me to move up to Orange courses but I haven't achieved them all yet – maybe in

2014? D. This year for the OY series I ran orange but at the club events I run red mediums. What do you enjoy about orienteering? R. The challenges, the different locations visited, the people involved and the de-tailed data available to analyse and ponder after the event. The food on sale after-wards is an attraction too! D. The thing I most enjoy about orienteer-ing is the physical while at the same time mental challenge that the sport demands of you. If we met you during the week, what would you be doing? R. I'd probably be on the computer produc-ing a report for cli-ents. On a better day I'd be out in the gar-den, in my workshop or up in the hills, hunting. D. Well I should be at school during the weekdays but any other time you could expect me to be doing my home-work/revision, going for a run, cricket, playing my guitar or eating. What's the one thing you most regretted? R. I had an opportunity to become a professional diver when I was younger which I declined and I sometimes wonder where such a career might have taken me. I had a young family at the time and the two weren't a realistic combination! D. Probably not running just that 2 seconds faster at HBSS orienteering champs. It would have been perfect to have HNHS on all three podium spots. Because now it has become my main training motivation!
