OUR SERVICE OFFERINGWe develop and connect leaders during innovative and transformational learning experiences, which lead to the building of extensive networks and, in turn, give rise to positive change across the African continent and beyond.

Open ProgrammesOpen programmes cater for individual managers, across all levels, who wish to further develop their management and leadership skills to make a real impact on their work environment and society. While comprehensive programmes provide participants with a broad over-view of management areas, discipline-specific short courses drill down more deeply into specific areas that make up the comprehen-sive programmes. These may be presented full time, modular and/or online.

Customised ProgrammesCustomised programmes cater for organisations that want to start with a blank page and design the learning interventions aligned with their organisation’s strategic needs and the individual’s development needs. Alternatively, organisations can tailor existing knowledge and the delivery thereof according to specific requirements. With content freely available for all to access and download, the differentiator is no longer content, but process and delivery and how this embeds learning. USB-ED allows for joint venture agreements between organisations.

USB-ED NetworkAt USB-ED, you will discover a true learning partner that is conscious of the broader African development picture. You will form part of a growing network of leaders and managers across the continent and beyond who are reaching new heights and who are aiming to make a meaningful contribution by leading and serving the communities they belong to and forming part of a strong alumni network.

Thought LeadershipUSB-ED has established Centres of Excellence to provide thought leadership and research to support both academic and practical learning in core areas. Applied research performed within the Centres will lead to compelling and unique learning interventions, significantly contributing to individual, organisational and societal transformation.

Centre for Applied EntrepreneurshipThe Centre for Applied Entrepreneurship envisions an entrepreneurial society where people accept the responsibility of creating opportunities and jobs for themselves. It is therefore the mission of the Centre to equip individuals and communities with entrepre-neurial and business management skills and attitudes that will empower them to create wealth for themselves and others.

Centre for Positive People @ WorkThe Centre for Positive People @ Work liaises with organisations to solve tough performance issues by conducting focused research projects for them. All consulting projects are data-driven and make use of the social sciences to diagnose and change organisations. This is done by focusing on helping the management of organisations to improve their own performance and that of their people and ultimately to enhance their companies.

Centre for Business Management of ProjectsThe Transnet Centre for Business Manage-ment of Projects commits itself to assisting organisations and individuals throughout Africa to deliver better project results. The Centre achieves this through focused training, research and coaching, by placing particular emphasis on the critical interface between business and project teams during the development and implementation stages of high-risk capital projects.

Centre for Leadership Studies at USBThis Centre develops knowledge and expertise on leadership through research. In particular, the centre focuses on the develop-ment of leadership models and frameworks that address the leadership challenges in the South African context. The Centre is responsible

for the leadership development track on the MBA programme. It also conducts research for large companies and offers executive coaching.

Centre for Corporate Governance inAfrica at USBThis Centre conducts multi-disciplinary research and offers interventions to improve the effectiveness of corporate governance in African organisations. Among others, the Centre focuses on the development of the compliance and performance aspects of directors’ attitudes, knowledge and skills. It also focuses on the link between corporate governance, business ethics and total organi-sational performance.

Institute for Futures Research at SUThe future success, if not the very survival, of organisations depends on the ability of decision-makers to identify and to act on constantly changing internal and external forces within the business environment. Strategic planners, who need to ensure that they are well-prepared to meet the many challenges facing them, can obtain support from the Institute for Futures Research (IFR) which will assist them in planning and strategic foresight. Established in 1974, the IFR at the Stellenbosch University aims to provide a comprehensive service in business futuristics to decision-makers.

School of Public Leadership at SUThe School of Public Leadership (SPL) is an African Governance Centre of Excellence at Stellenbosch University adding public value for the public good within a global and African context. The SPL relates dynamically, intellectually and professionally to the three pillars of effective and ethical public lead-ership – good governance, environmental management and sustainable development.

MANAGEMENT

OUR CULTUREAt USB-ED we leverage on our entrepreneur-ial culture, rich experiences and achievements to focus our energy and resources on human capital development, in particular leadership andmanagement. Our Ethos informs this purpose, propelling us to make a meaningful contribution firstly to the development of Africa and its people and secondly beyond Africa where our resources and capacity allow us to reach.

We consistently strive to ensure that our learning interventions speak to the current and future realities that organisations may face. We there-fore first get to know the culture and specific challenges of organisations and countries in orderto design and deliver relevant programmes. The result is a delivery style that contextualised and contemporary in approach.

OUR LEARNING PHILOSOPHYOur learning interventions distinguished by the differentiators of process and delivery provide leaders and managers with a solid theoretical underpinning with a strong focus on practical application. Participants are equipped with the

tools and skills needed to advance their careers through continual learning and development in a vivacious and meaningful educational experi-ence.

In the design of our programme interventions we focus on the following components of devel-oping leaders:

• Knowing: The conceptual expertise and awareness of facts, frameworks, and theories known to leaders

• Thinking: How they think about what they have experienced and what they know

• Doing: The ability to apply (what they know) and to execute in addition to what they have experienced

• Being: The understanding of who “I” am, how “I” behave and how “I” match with the values of the organisation, the industry and my profession

In designing our programme we believe learn-ing is facilitated when existing knowledge is activated as a foundation for new knowledge and when that new knowledge is demonstrated to the learner, applied by the learner and inte-grated into the learner’s world.

Management programmes are actively presented in these countries.

USB-ED will be expanding its executive development services in these countries.

OUR FOOTPRINTWe continually seek to expand our footprint, particularly in Africa. USB-ED has a presence in three South African provinces, Western Cape (Cape Town), Gauteng (Johannesburg) and KwaZulu-Natal (Durban). We also offer programmes in Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania,Zambia, Zimbabwe and beyond Africa in the United Arab Emirates.

The ASTD understands that the main engine of growth is the accumulation of human capital – or knowledge – and the main source of differences in living standards among nations is a difference in human capital. While not necessarily widely accepted, the idea needs to be considered that physical capital (conventional personal wealth), though necessary to main-tain dignified living standards, is decidedly subsidiary to cre-ating real and sustainable social equity. In this context, ASTD is a society dedicated to the training and talent development field in Africa. ASTD positions itself as a stakeholder, collabo-rator and facilitator in creating, disseminating and acting on knowledge that assists professionals to interact successfully with tomorrow’s people in tomorrow’s organisations.. fdgdf

We collaborate with international business schools and leading corporate partners to offer our participants world-class business learning opportunities.
