Owner CV

Career Background:

I have had the privilege to have been involved in a vast array of types of buildings during my career to thus far. I am passionate about buildings and the building environment. I am of opinion that as a designer, I have a social responsibility towards not only the community, but also to the environment. Thus, it is of utmost importance for me that my designs should be sensitive to the environment as well as towards nature. Practicing in South Africa has its own type of challenges, but, opportunities as well, and this differs in some instances from the first world countries. The scope of work in SA is at times much smaller due to the economical situation in our country as well as due to other factors. However, a positive aspect of this is that I have allowed myself to also be just as creative even though the client may have a very limited budget. Thus, it has often forced me to be just as creative and to produce just as creative product(s) within the realms of such a limited budget. Due to not being limited spatially, the buildings are usually not higher than three stories. Being sensitive to the environment, it is also more practical in SA to use the contours of the landscape instead of building sky-scrapers. I have made certain specific decisions regarding my career and this included the following: It is important for me to learn as much as possible from the industry. I decided when starting my career that instead of starting at a big firm, I chose a smaller firm where my role included much more responsibilities. I had the privilege of handling all the projects that I worked on from the clients brief, to conceptual stage through to final delivery. Learning is knowledge and I strive to be at the forefront of new design philosophies, new innovative materials and new design methods. I therefore got involved in lecturing at a design institution. This enabled me to be part of an environment of learning. I had the opportunity to work on various community projects. Thus enabling me to educate people regarding design and the importance thereof. The exterior is just as important as the interior of a structure, and vice versa, and therefore it is important for me to excel in both these fields.

Page 7: Company Profile

Environmentally friendly designs are an important part of my design processes and I strive to be part of a new way of design thinking. I believe the building environment encompasses far more than just the physical. “Creating meaningful space” is my design objective. I reached a stage in my career that I believe I have the knowledge, confidence and creativity to be part of larger scale projects.

LOW COST STUDENT ACCOMMODATION – POTCHEFSTROOM – South Africa (2004)

This project is an example of creativity with a very limited budget. The Client requested a very simplistic design due to their financial restraints. I could however produce a design that was aesthetical pleasing and still within budget. This project shows my ability to give the client the best value for his/her money without compromising too much on aesthetical value. Financial management of the client’s resources was assessed and the results were well received by the client.

OFFICE DEVELOPMENT–

POTCHEFSTROOM – South Africa (2000)

This Office park forms part of a community project which was designed for financial brokers from previously disadvantage communities. A very limited budget was available and the challenge for this was to create an aesthetical design with very limited resources.

This preliminary sketch plans for a 46 room boutique hotel as part of SAFA training centre, was presented to members of FIFA. This design and drawings were generated in only 4 days, complete with elevations and project reports. HOUSE VELDSMAN - HERMANUS – South Africa (2005)

This exclusive up-market residence is situated on a very prestigious site in Hermanus. The site is very narrow which made the design very challenging. The aim of the design was to create as many visual connections with the surroundings. The challenge of this project was to comply with all the strict regulations of the local council as well as to satisfy the client’s needs.

THE SQUARE – POTCHEFSTROOM – South Africa (2004)

This retail development consisting of small to medium size retail spaces is based on the “strip-mall” concept. The zoning of the site forced the design to be very linear. The developer further requested that repetitive elements be used. To ensure that the design was not too monotonous, emphasis was placed on form giving and colour scheme.

Badhuis Manor

This project, “Badhuis Manor”, situated in The Hague, Netherlands, was part of a study for a developer who bought this building as an investment (2007). Three different options were investigated, namely converting the old house into a boutique hotel, executive offices or exclusive apartments. The project demonstrates my ability to be creative and to understand structure, to optimize space through creative planning and to work within very specific boundaries.

Conclusion

I am con=fident that our company do not only possess the skill to complete any project succesfully but also the passion for any form of arhitecture. I have made certain specific decisions regarding my career and this included the following: It is important for me to learn as much as possible from the industry. I decided when starting

my career that instead of starting at a big firm, I chose a smaller firm where my role included much more responsibilities.

We have a wealth of experience and can offer prospective clients a one stop shop. Regards, ________________________ Louis Boshoff
