BGC Contracting is one of Australia’s major open pit mining contractors. Our mining team has extensive experience in iron ore, coal, gold and a diverse range of other minerals.

Contract Mining of ore and waste per annum from mines within the Koolyanobbing, Windarling and Mount Jackson regions in WA. Ore is hauled utilising road trains from Windarling and Mount Jackson to Koolyanobbing where it is crushed, screened and loaded on to trains at a rate of approximately 11 million tonnes a year.

Atlas IronAnother of BGC Contracting’s long standing relationships is with Altas Iron. BGC is currently progressing drilling, blasting and mining contracts at Atlas’ Wodgina iron ore project near Port Hedland. BGC’s relationship with Atlas has been a mutually beneficial one as it has seen the two companies significantly grow their businesses together over the years. The Wodgina contract will conclude with the life of mine and is estimated to be completed by February 2016.

Testament to the strength of BGC’s existing relationship with Atlas, BGC was also awarded their second major greenfield mining project with Atlas at Mt. Webber. The scope of work consists of development work, mining, and crushing and screening operations at Atlas’ Mt Webber mine located near Marble Bar in the Pilbara region. The project value is in the order of $300 million with mining production to be 6mtpa over a period of 5 years.

Process Minerals International Not far from Mt Webber is another BGC Contracting project undertaking in the Pilbara Region, the Spinifex Ridge iron ore project which is also located near Marble Bar.

The project uses conventional open pit mining techniques including pre-stripping topsoil, ramp construction, equipment maintenance, drilling, blasting and load and haul of direct shipping iron ore to the run of mine (ROM) and waste to the dump.

BGC’s involvement in Spinifex Ridge has developed from its initial project scope right through to life of mine completion. What also makes this project unique in nature is that it has been managed by BGC over the project life cycle via two different mine owners, having originally been owned by Moly Mines, followed by eventual ownership by Process Minerals International.

BGC Contracting welcomes the opportunity to work with our clients in the identification of opportunities for the participation of Indigenous Australians in all of our projects.

Safety and the environment

Indigenous engagement

trisAfeSafety is part of everything we do at BGC Contracting and this is demonstrated through TRISAFE. TRISAFE is ‘Creating a No Injuries Environment’ and is an in-house safety initiative unique to BGC Contracting. It was developed to encourage everyone to be pro-active about safety in all aspects of life and make safety a ‘state of mind’ when at work or at home. TRISAFE uses the international “A-OK” logo and is displayed on pyramid faces at all our operations. The three elements of TRISAFE are:

OUR PROGRAM START SAFE - STAY SAFE BEHAVIOUR

The START SAFE - STAY SAFE element of TRISAFE is a simple approach to being diligent in everything we do, it encourages risk assessment and empowers everyone to stop so that they are in a position to make the right decision about what to do next.TRISAFE has a strong visual presence which is reinforced throughout all BGC Contracting operations and the A-OK logo is represented on our clothing, stickers, signs, intranet, safety awards, equipment and in offices/workshops where we use small and large four-sided pyramids to explain the objectives of the initiative.

Australian government building and construction OH&S accreditation scheme In April 2006, BGC Contracting became the first WA building and construction company and one of the first companies nationwide to be awarded provisional accreditation under the Australian Government’s Building and Construction Occupational Health and Safety Accreditation Scheme.

Safety Steering CouncilSafety performance is monitored by our Safety Steering Council, which is chaired by the CEO. Senior management representatives from each area attend the Council meetings. Measurable targets and objectives are reviewed at these meetings, with the aim of ‘Creating a No Injuries Environment’. Safety initiatives are communicated down to all levels of the organisation, with all our personnel and subcontractors kept informed about and directly involved in workplace safety issues.

TrainingBGC is fully committed to the development and training of our people to ensure they are sufficiently competent and able to carry out their roles safely. We have established a structured training program that delivers professional and competency-based skills to our teams. To ensure that our projects can be resourced expediently, efficiently and with minimum disruption to site activities, we have established a purpose-built training centre that delivers first class induction and operator training. The facility incorporates a state-of-the-art plant simulator.

Environmental managementThe BGC Contracting Environmental Management System is accredited to ISO14001, and our aim is to always conduct business in line with the community’s desire to protect the natural environment. We work closely with our clients and integrate contractual and legislated environmental requirements into our approved Environmental Management Plan for the project.

We support initiatives that assist and encourage Indigenous Australians in the transition from education and training to the workforce. BGC also fully supports the transition of Indigenous employees from direct employment with BGC to small-business owner/owner-operator/subcontractor.We have in place strategic alliances with Indigenous groups/organisations/businesses which will enable the delivery of Indigenous participation requirements as agreed upon by clients and Native Title/Traditional Owner groups.

BGC has four levels of Indigenous engagement:1. Direct employment2. Entry level employment3. Small-business owners/subcontractors4. Joint venture participation with Indigenous

businesses

BGC understands that in most cases the client aims to provide priority employment in this order:1. Traditional Owners/Native Title claimants/

holders2. Indigenous people from a specific region3. Indigenous people from a particular state

(i.e. WA or Qld)4. Australian Indigenous people (from the

mainland and the Torres Strait Islands)BGC recognises that our clients aim to make a difference. As such, we will assist our clients in meeting their Indigenous employment obligations under any agreements they may have with Traditional Owner/Native Title groups.

Our community contributions and achievements include:

Main Roads WA Team Savannah Project (East Kimberley): Multi-award winning project, including EKAAA (East Kimberley Aboriginal Achievement Awards) in the following areas; Outstanding Contribution to the Employment & Training of Aboriginal People, Outstanding Project that Encourages Aboriginal Participation, Trainee of the Year, and WA Engineering Excellence Award.

Roy Hill Infrastructure Project near Newman (various packages of work including Aerodrome, Roads & Port Landside): This project launched a very successful Roller Operator Training Program for Entry Level Indigenous candidates; some with no work history. ‘Job Ready’ training was combined with practical skills training, with the guarantee of employment for candidates who successfully completed the course. 80% of these candidates not only successfully completed the program, but are still employed with us at various civil and mining operations. They have also progressed from Rollers to other machines, such as 785 haul trucks.

Rio Tinto Eight Mile Yard Project near Karratha: A successful program to support local, Traditional Owner, Aboriginal candidates who faced serious barriers to employment such as a lack of driver’s licence, no permanent home/housing issues, long term unemployment, and contact with the prison system.

At our Wodgina site, BGC is providing ITA with Aboriginal employment and training opportunities for local traditional owners, including the supply of plant and equipment and contracting services for the Wodgina and Mount Webber projects.

Brand Pillars

Brand pillars are the promises that we make about our brand to all stakeholders across the industry. they are Project Delivery, strong relationships and great People.

Project DeLivery

We deliver millions of tonnes of material annually for our clients. As a company, we pride ourselves in our fierce motivation to always go the extra mile to get the job done. This is further demonstrated by our attitude of ‘doing what we say we’re going to do’. We always deliver on our commitments.

strong reLAtionsHiPs

At BGC Contracting, we attribute our ongoing success to the strength of our relationships we have fostered and built with some of the largest and most innovative mining and civil companies Australia wide.

It’s these relationships that form the foundation of our industry success, relationships with our people and our clients that are stronger than the steel produced from the ore we mine.

greAt PeoPLe

If the strength of our relationships is our strongest resource, our people are by far our most precious one. We are only as good as the people we employ... Great People!

At BGC Contracting, we pride ourselves on the partnerships we have established, cemented and grown with our clients over many years. Therefore we are always in pursuit of finding and retaining the very best people to not only carry out the work we do, but also form a key part of the teams we work in. These pillars are a symbol of strength and stability, and form the basis of what we want to be known for in the market. As a result we strive to excel in each of them.

our Brand Platform - 110%

The big difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little bit extra. This means going further, trying harder and thinking smarter. Our goal is to bring that extra level of commitment to every project we undertake. At BGC Contracting, we call this ‘110%’.

It’s a mantra instilled in every one of our team members and it’s what drives every aspect of our business from the boardroom to the coalface. Every day we put in the hard yards and extra miles to deliver for our clients. It’s the reason why Australia’s leading resources companies are continuing to choose us as their trusted partners.

It’s not so much a slogan or a tag line as it is an attitude to a level of commitment that permeates across the entire business. It’s this attitude that motivates our people and drives our success and it’s this level of commitment we apply to how we treat our clients and each other on a daily basis.

BGC’s founder Len Buckeridge stood testament to this level of commitment. A man who has gone the extra mile time and time again to not only build a great Australian Company, but also leave a lasting legacy.
