Lightning Strikes Twice Earlier this year we had cause to spread the happynews that a skeletal trailer stolen 12 months previouslywhilst on hire to customers in County Antrim, had beenrecovered, unfortunately without the shipping containerit disappeared with. Regrettably lightning has strucktwice and road haulage drivers are, once again, beingasked to help.

The photograph shows two viewsof a distinctive step frame trailerbelonging to us which has thistime disappeared from theBattersea area of SouthLondon.

Small companies like us cannot afford to keep replacingcapital equipment, and insurance costs these daysmean the insurers look to regain their own losses byway of increased future premiums.

Cost Of Spoiled Loads Due To TheMigrant Crisis To Hit £1bn Per AnnumRHA Chief Executive Richard Burnett has highlighted the dramatic cost of spoiled loads due to the migrantcrisis in Calais, estimated to be running at approximately £1 billion per annum.

Giving evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee hearing on the migrant situation at Calais, RichardBurnett explained that illegal stowaways have been known to contaminate loads with human waste and inother cases had tampered with the loads as a means of making room in which to hide. As a result,companies were having to destroy complete shipments of goods.

Commenting, Mr Burnett said: “The owners of goods have to take the drastic action of scrapping loads asthey cannot take the risk that they have been contaminated or damaged.

With something in the order of 10,000 loads moving every day across the Channel, even if only 1% aretampered with or soiled, at a loss rate of about £30,000 per trailer, this equates to about £3 Million a dayequaling £1 Billion a year. That’s a massive and unacceptable cost to our economy and many hauliers arehaving to absorb large parts of that cost. On top of that are the other enormous costs of vehicles unable towork as a result of being caught for days on end in Kent’s Operation stack and penalty payments for lack ofdelivery. In addition, the stress caused to drivers is incalculable.”

Changes to the PaperCounterpart LicenceFollowing on from the abolition of the papercounterpart licence in June 2015, the DVLAhas responded to industry feedback andextended the lifespan of the generated checkcode from 72 hours to 21 days.
