After a successful design collaboration early in 2013 working on the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of Other Desert Cities, renowned Australian contemporary artist Callum Morton approached Candlestick to collaborate on Monument Park in the Docklands Precinct, Melbourne.

The park pays homage to the iconic statues and public art works throughout Melbourne by using the basic forms of these icons of the city and abstracting them with the use of drapery and geometry.

The design team worked closely with one another and with the City of Melbourne to make this an exciting, engaging place to stop, relax and inhabit.

The approach to the design was to create a destination IRU�UHVLGHQWV�DQG�YLVLWRUV�E\�FUHDWLQJ�D�FRPIRUWDEOH��DQG�PXOWLSXUSRVH�HQYLURQPHQW�IRU�DQ\�WLPH�RI�GD\��

The lighting approach towards the sculptures was to create welcoming spaces in the landscape. Drawing on works of James 7XUUHOO��2ODIXU�(OLDVVRQ�DQG�'DQ�)ODYLQ�DQG�WKH�UHOLF�OLNH�parks of Serbia, Russia and the eastern bloc as a starting point.

:H� ZDQWHG� WKH� GHVLJQ� WR� IHHO� FRPIRUWDEOH� DQG� LQYLWLQJ� WR�WKH�SXEOLF�LQ�DQ�HYHQLQJ�VHWWLQJ��HVSHFLDOO\�LQ�WKH�ZDUPHU�months and longer days) taking further references from DUFKLWHFWXUDOO\�GHVLJQHG�SDYLOLRQV�DQG�RXWGRRU�URRPV��

:LWK� WKLV� LQWHQWLRQ� RI� H[WHQGHG� HYHQLQJ� XVH� ZH� QHHGHG� WR�SURYLGH�D�VDIH�DQG�VHFXUH�HQYLURQPHQW�ZKLOVW�DOVR�GHOLYHULQJ�a sense of prestige to the New Quay area.

The sculpture design outcome is an embedded lighting scheme that makes the colored surfaces in the sculptures stand out from afar, drawing the peoples curiosity into the space.

A lawn in the centre of the space lit by LED strip concealed LQ�D�VXUURXQGLQJ�VHDW�JLYHV�D�VWULNLQJ�JUHHQ�IRFDO�SRLQW�RU�‘heart’ to the park that can be used as a central point to then go on and explore the space and the sculptures.

Candlestick was approached by CLEAR design on behalf of Wolfdene with the idea of creating a light feature that would engage public interest and create a talking point around the intersection of Frankston - Dandenong Rd and Dandenong - +DVWLQJV�5G�WKURXJK�WKLV�FRQYHUVDWLRQ�7KH�7UHHV�ZHUH�EURXJKW�to life.

The Trees are a semi-permanent, off grid lighting feature to HQJDJH�D�SLHFH�RI�ODQG�HDU�PDUNHG�IRU�GHYHORSPHQW��7KH�SURMHFW�KDG�D�QXPEHU�RI�FKDOOHQJHV��ODUJHO\�GXH�WR�WKH�VLWH�KDYLQJ�QR�power access and no security.

7R�GHOLYHU�WKH�SURMHFW�&DQGOHVWLFN�FDPH�WR�LW�ZLWK�D�GHVLJQ�and install approach, maintaining full control of the project and allowing full disclosure to the clients regarding power, VHFXULW\�DQG�LQVWDOO�UHTXLUHPHQWV�WKDW�QHHGHG�WR�¿W�LQ�ZLWK�D�QXPEHU�RI�VWDNHKROGHUV�DQG�VHUYLFH�SURYLGHUV�DWWDFKHG�WR�WKH�GHYHORSPHQW�LQ�WKH�ORQJ�DQG�VKRUW�WHUP�

The design resonated around the power needed on the site. With no existing infrastructure a solar powered system was decided WKH�PRVW�FRQYHQLHQW�VROXWLRQ�DQG�&DQGOHVWLFN�ZRUNHG�FORVHO\�ZLWK� (QYLURJURXS� WR� EXLOG� D� V\VWHP� WKDW� VHUYLFHG� WKH� SRZHU�requirement for the job. The outcome was a neat 150 watt system ZLWK�WKUHH�GD\V�RI�EDWWHU\�DXWRQRP\��UXQQLQJ�HLJKW�¿[WXUHV�RQ���Y�'&�DQG�HPSOR\LQJ�D�WLPH�FORFN�WKDW�UHJXODWHV�LWVHOI�RQ�WKH�cycle of the sun.

In commissioning the system there was a requirement for DFWLYDWLRQ�RI�WKH�IHDWXUH�DW�WZR�WLPHV�RI�GD\���IRXU�KRXUV�RI�DQ�HYHQLQJ�DIWHU�VXQVHW�DQG�WZR�KRXUV�RI�D�PRUQLQJ�EHIRUH�sun rise. These different times allowed maximum exposure of the site around commuting times with the intention that they become a talking point and ultimately drawing public interest in the site.

7KLV�IHDWXUH�ZDV�WKH�¿UVW�RI�D�QXPEHU�RI�GLIIHUHQW�DFWLYDWLRQ�points that are slated for installation and construction in 2013 - 14 and therefore the approach had to include some ÀH[LELOLW\�� %\� LQFOXGLQJ� WKLV� LQ� WKH� LQLWLDO� GHVLJQ� EULHI�candlestick were able to design a system to be re purposed, EURNHQ�XS�RU�PRYHG�DURXQG�ZLWK�PLQLPDO�IXVV��,W�DOVR�DOORZV�IRU��the system to expand, contract or be split up to cater for new projects or permanent operations on the site.

Is it a ghost train, an amusement ride or an entry into the internet? You decide in this experience of light, darkness, VRXQG� DQG� PRYHPHQW� WKURXJK� WKH� 'RJ� /HJ� WXQQHO� RQ� 6\GQH\¶V�Cockatoo Island.

&RQWLQXLQJ�D�VWURQJ�FROODERUDWLYH�SDUWQHUVKLS��&DOOXP�0RUWRQ�and Candlestick again came together on a new installation work The Other Side for the 19th Biennale of Sydney. The work is EDVHG�DURXQG�WKH�ROG�*KRVW�7UDLQV�RI�WKH�WUDYHOOLQJ�FDUQLYDO�

The process began with breaking down the concept of a traditional ghost train into it’s basic elements and working RQ� WKH� HQYLURQPHQWDO� LQWHUDFWLRQV� DQG� H[SHULHQFHV� WKDW� ZH�could focus on to create a sense of fun, fear and playfulness.

The most important realisation whilst exploring this work was WKDW�ZH�QHHGHG�WR�SURYLGH�DQ�LQFOXVLYH�H[SHULHQFH�IRU�DGXOWV�and children alike, for this to happen the experience needed QRW�MXVW�WR�EH�¿OOHG�ZLWK�IHDU�EXW�D�ORW�RI�IXQ�ZLWK�D�IHZ�scary moments. We therefore played with short sharp light EXUVWV�WKDW�JDYH�YLHZHUV�DQ�LQLWLDO�VKRFN�WKHQ�XVHG�GHYLFHV�such as the bleeding in of color to strobing light sequences DQG�JLYLQJ�D�JOLPSVH�RI�WKH�WXQQHOV�DUFKLWHFWXUH�DV�D�VHQVH�RI�DVVXUDQFH�ZKLOH�SURYLGLQJ�DQ�RYHUDOO�MRXUQH\�LPPHUVHG�LQ�color, smoke and sound.

What would a ghost train be without a train? This train became the controlling force to the work, guiding participants through WKH�VKLIWLQJ�HQYLURQPHQW�DV�LW�VQDNHV�WKURXJK�WKH�WXQQHO��)URP�here the focus of the process shifted into creation of light, GDUNQHVV�DQG�VRXQG�¿OOLQJ�WKH�WXQQHO�DQG�SURYLGLQJ�D�QDUUDWLYH�to the work.

This operating system allows total autonomy without WKH� QHHG� IRU� DQ� RSHUDWRU�� DQG� SURYLGHV� PD[LPXP� ÀH[LELOLW\�in isolating the control of sophisticated light and sound VHTXHQFHV�WR�VSHFL¿F�DUHDV�WKURXJK�RXW�WKH����P�ORQJ�WXQQHO�

Silent Life by Sally Cleary - a haunting multi- media installation that addresses Australian ecology: water usage, KDELWDW� UHPRYDO� DQG� VSHFLHV� H[WLQFWLRQ�� ,Q� WKH� PLGGOH� RI� D�ULYHU�PDGH�IURP�SRUFHODLQ�VOLS�ZKLFK�VORZO\�GULHV�DQG�FUDFNV�RYHU�WLPH��WZR�SRUFHODLQ�%DUNLQJ�RZOV�SHUFKHG�RQ�IHQFH�SRVWV�call out to each other (a poignant reminder that they once inhabited the Great Otway National Park).

Sally approached Candlestick with this project wanting to open D�GLVFXVVLRQ�DERXW�FUHDWLQJ�DQ�HQYLURQPHQW�WKDW�WKH�ZRUN�FRXOG�inhabit. For us, this came in the form of creating a dynamic OLJKWLQJ�VFKHPH�WKDW�FRXOG�HQKDQFH�DQG�VXSSRUW�WKH�QDUUDWLYH�RI� WKH� ZRUN� ZKLOVW� HQJDJLQJ� WKH� VSDFH� DQG� WKH� YLHZHU�� EXW�ZLWKRXW�RYHU�SRZHULQJ�WKH�HVVHQFH�RI�WKH�ZRUN�

Along with the two ceramic Barking Owls sitting on their fence posts, Silent Life included a composed sound track that DOORZHG�WKH�YLHZHU�WR�LPPHUVH�WKHPVHOYHV�LQ�D�ZRUOG�RI�QDWXUH�DQG�UHÀHFWLRQ�

Candlestick approached the work closely with the artist with D�YLHZ�RI�FUHDWLQJ�D�G\QDPLF�OLJKWLQJ�VFKHPH�WKDW�PRYHG�ZLWK�WKLV�VRXQG�FRPSRVLWLRQ��UHÀHFWLQJ�WKH�WLPH�RI�GD\�DQG�LQ�WXUQ��WUDQVIRUPLQJ�WKH�VSDFH�IURP�JDOOHU\�WR�HQYLURQPHQW��

:LWK�D�OLPLWHG�EXGJHW�WKH�¿UVW�HOHPHQW�FDQGOHVWLFN�HPSOR\HG�ZDV�WR�UHFRORU�WKH�JDOOHU\�ÀRRGV�DOUHDG\�LQ�WKH�VSDFH�WR�D�GHHS�PLGQLJKW�EOXH�DQG�VHW�WKHVH�WR�D�ORZ�OHYHO��WKLV�VLPSOH�FKDQJH�WR�WKH�VSDFH�ZDV�VXSHUEO\�HIIHFWLYH��FKDQJLQJ�WKH�QDWXUH�RI�the space instantly and creating a starting point to spring from for the feature lighting.

The feature lighting consisted of a four channel dimming system and a LANbox controlling a number of small luminaires placed throughout the space with a color palette of warm, white and cool blue. The chosen palette angles of the placed luminaires HYRNHG� WKH� SURFHVV� RI� PRUQLQJ� LQWR� WKH� GHDG� RI� QLJKW�� WKH�OLJKWLQJ� VFKHPH� ZDV� FRPSRVHG� DURXQG� WKH� VRXQG� SURYLGHG� DQG�ERWK�ZKHUH�FRQWUROOHG�RQ�D�ORRS�YLD�4ODE�XVLQJ�0LGL�WULJJHUV�

The Third Place: A place to spend time with others. An extension RI�WKH�HQYLURQPHQW��D�SODFH�WR�UHOD[��WR�VORZ�GRZQ��7KH�VRFLDO�VXUURXQGLQJV�VHSDUDWH�IURP�WKH�WZR�XVXDO�VRFLDO�HQYLURQPHQWV�of home and the workplace.

Ray Oldenburg states that ‘a true Third Place’ should comprise D�QXPEHU�RI�KDOOPDUNV�LQFOXGLQJ���EHLQJ�IUHH�RU�LQH[SHQVLYH�highly accessible: proximate for many (walking distance),,QYROYH�UHJXODUV�±�WKRVH�ZKR�KDELWXDOO\�FRQJUHJDWH�WKHUH�Welcoming and comfortable - both new friends and old should be found there.

Taking these as the inspiration for this work Candlestick set out to explore how media in the form of light could enhance RU� FUHDWH� DQ� LQWHUYHQWLRQ� LQ� WKH� HQYLURQPHQW� WKDW� FRXOG�connect people - strangers or friends in a common place - for FRQYHUVDWLRQ��PHHWLQJ�RU�WR�VLPSO\�WDNH�D�PRPHQW�WR�UHÀHFW��$�SODFH�WR�WDNH�D�EUHDWK�RU�KDYH�IXQ�

Candlestick were commissioned by Melbourne Fringe create a work for Melbourne institution Pellegrini’s for this work, a place known just as much for its loyal clientele as it is for coffee and amazing watermelon granita.

The intention of the work was to be subtle and abstracted in VRPH�IRUP��D�FRQYHUVDWLRQ�SLHFH�WKDW�HQJDJHG�DQG�SUHVHQWHG�DQ�element of small hints to the history that is just as rich as the espresso and the pasta sauces Pellegrini’s is known for.

µ7XQH¶� EHFDPH� D� G\QDPLF� OLJKW� FDQYDV� WKDW� UHVSRQGHG� DQG�interacted with patrons and staff and was tuned to respond to VRPH�RI�WKH�TXLQWHVVHQWLDOO\�IDPLOLDU�VRXQGV�RI�WKH�FDIH�±�WKH�banging closed of the door, the making of coffee and tapping of WKH�SRUWD¿OWHU�DQG�EDVNHW��WKH�FOLFN�RI�ZDVKLQJ�FRIIHH�JODVVHV�and saucers in an antiquated sink at the counter etc.

The work consists of a microphone picking up on the sound inside the space connected to a mac mini running a MIDI patch WULJJHUHG� E\� VRXQG�� DFWLYLW\� DQG� SDWURQV� LQ� WKH� VSDFH� DQG�generating a randomised MIDI cue that is sent to a number of pre-programmed lighting sequences through a DMX controlled /$1ER[�WKH�UHVXOW�LV�SOD\HG�EDFN�RQ�D�ZRYHQ�VWULQJ�FDQYDVV�E\�two lines of colour mixing LED strip.
