Filosofo prima di essere architetto, Richard Neutra era convinto che l’architettura dovesse rendere migliore la vita dell’uomo. La sua idea progettuale aveva una costante: l’uomo e la vita quotidiana. Da qui, la sua architettura: ampi spazi vetrati, contatto con la natura, funzionalità, organicità, viste mozzafiato. Nato a Vienna nel 1892, Neutra frequentò la Technische Hochschule di Vienna e fu allievo e collaboratore di Adolf Loos. Poi emigrò negli Stati Uniti nel 1923.
Visse e lavorò gran parte dei suoi anni in America, dove costruì numerosi edifici, vero vanto dell’architettura di tutti i tempi. Maestro inconsapevole delle linee guida dell’architettura dei nostri giorni, concepiva la natura non come “altro” rispetto all’uomo. Il paesaggio doveva vivere in simbiosi con il progetto. La sua idea di un’architettura dal volto umano si ritrova nel suo libro “Survival through Design”, pubblicato nel 1956. Morì aWuppertal in Germania nel 1970.

Leggera, priva di gravità, inserita nell’ospitale teatro del deserto fu realizzata nel 1946 per il magnate Kauffman. Si trova nel quartiere Vista Las Palmas di Palm Springs, sotto le montagne di San Jacinto.
Richard Neutra was a philosopher first, and only then an architect. Neutra was firmly convinced that the architect’s task was to improve the quality of life. His design approach was based on a recurring, constant theme: man and day-to-day living. And this formed the basis for his architecture: spacious glazed areas, contact with Nature, functional design, harmony and stunning views.Born in Vienna in 1892, Neutra attended the Technische Hochschule in Vienna, studying under and later working with Adolf Loos.
In 1923 Neutra emigrated to the United States, where he lived and worked for most of his life, designing numerous buildings which were to become timeless examples of architectural perfection. Largely unaware that he was to become a major influence on our modern-day architecture, he considered Nature to be at one with man. The landscape had to live in symbiosis with the architectural project. His concept of ‘architecture with a human face’ is the main theme of his book “Survival Through Design” published in 1956.Neutra died in Wuppertal, Germany, in 1970.

Kaufmann. It is located in the Vista Las Palmas area of Palm Springs, beneath the San Jacinto mountains.

È con questo nuovo linguaggio che l’architetto Richard Neutra (classe 1892) ha lasciato il segno nella storia dell’architettura moderna, tracciando le linee guida dell’abitare contemporaneo. Il suo imperativo è stabilire una connessione diretta con l’ambiente naturale.
Il nuovo catalogo della collezione Chunga ripropone la leggerezza formale e l’atmosfera unica delle case progettate dall’architetto di origine austriaca. Ciò che contraddistingue il percorso architetturale di Neutra è il suo costante studio dell’uomo. Convinto che la buona architettura abbia una funzione terapeutica, fu in grado di conciliare l’uomo con l’ambiente in una “gioiosa danza unificante”. Di pagina in pagina, il susseguirsi delle composizioni Chunga esercita un’azione positiva sull’occhio e sullo spirito. Tutto è in funzione della bellezza per il benessere della persona.

The new Chunga catalogue re-interprets the ethereal lightness and unique atmosphere of the homes built by the Austrian architect.The distinguishing aspect of Neutra’s architectural development was that he studied man incessantly. He was convinced that good architecture had a therapeutic function, and was able to reconcile man with the environment in a “joyous unifying dance”.Page after page, the different compositions in the Chunga range are a balm to the eye and to the spirit. Minimalismo dell’acciaio per la struttura situata in un parco pubblico. Un edificio che prova l’abilità di Neutra nel progettare spazi che non condizionano i comportamenti dell’uomo, ma che fungano da sfondo neutro alle sue attività. Sui lati est e ovest, il salone è provvisto di ampie porte scorrevoli che favoriscono il passaggio tra l’interno e l’esterno e mettono in risalto il carattere del padiglione: l’estrema leggerezza degli elementi costruttivi.
Sul lato nord, si apre uno spazio scenico al quale si accede sia dal salone centrale sia dall’anfiteatro. Una serie di pareti, a regolare distanza l’una dall’altra e di dimensioni gradualmente crescenti, risale la collina aumentando progressivamente di dimensione, così il padiglione, quale paesaggio edificato, si fa gradualmente parte integrante del paesaggio naturale.
The minimalism of steel for this structure, located in a public park. A building that demonstrates Neutra’s ability to design spaces that in no way affect man’s behaviour, but rather serve to provide a neutral background for his daily life. At the east-and west-facing sides of the hall, large sliding doors facilitate the passage from the interior to the exterior of the building, and highlight the distinctive feature of the hall: the extraordinary lightness of the structural elements.
A series of parallel walls are located at regular intervals, and gradually increase in height as they climb the hill so that the pavilion, which becomes a man-made landscape, gradually blends to form part of the natural surroundings.

L’imponente casa a tre piani, orientata da est verso ovest e commissionata da Gert Bucerius editore del “Die Zeit” si trova aggrappata ad un ripido pendio montuoso. La sua posizione offre uno straordinario panorama sul lungo braccio del Lago Maggiore 600 m più in basso e sul grandioso scenario delle montagne circostanti.
La casa è costruita con materiali molto pregiati: acciaio legato spazzolato, legno di noce e marmo. Al piano terra, si trova la vasca dell’acqua più insolita che Neutra abbia mai realizzato: in gran parte all’aperto, ha un lembo minore in posizione leggermente angolata che si spinge fin dentro la casa, in una grotta artificiale le cui pareti, di levigatissime pietre vive, cingono da due lati la piccola “piscina” e l’attiguo giardino d’inverno.
This imposing three-storey house, facing in an east-west direction and commissioned by Gert Bucerius, editor of “Die Zeit”, nestles on a steep mountainside incline. Its position offers a stunning view of Lake Maggiore, 600 metres below, and a breathtaking vista of the surrounding mountains.
The house is built using the finest materials: brushed steel alloys, walnut and marble. On the ground floor, the most unusual pool that Neutra ever conceived: mostly in the open air, a smaller, slightly-angled loop extends into the house itself, in an artificial grotto whose walls, in smoothed natural stone, enclose the small pool and the adjacent winter garden on two sides.

Leggera, luminosa e di una modernità già classica, la “Lovell Health House” di Richard Neutra, è una delle case più importanti e famose della storia dell’architettura moderna. Si tratta del primo edificio abitativo americano costruito su una struttura portante d’acciaio concepita sul modello dei grattacieli di New York e Chicago.
La casa appare ancorata ad una ripida collina di Los Angeles, come una sorta di nave a vapore ormeggiata alla banchina. Le pareti trasparenti e la sottile struttura metallica sottolineano l’unità e la continuità dello spazio che fluisce liberamente dall’interno all’esterno. La dimora fu dotata di centro benessere, in cui era compreso uno spazio esterno per l’attività fisica, logge per dormire, verande aperte e ben riparate.
Light, bright and in a modern style that is today considered classic, Richard Neutra’s “Lovell Health House” is one of the most important and famous houses in the history of modern architecture. It was the first residential building built with a steel frame structure based on that of the skyscrapers of New York and Chicago.
The house appears to be anchored to a steep hillside in Los Angeles, like a sort of steamship moored against a quay. The transparent walls and the narrow steel structure emphasize the unity and continuity of space, which flows freely from the interior to the exterior. The house features a wellness centre which comprises an external area for physical activity, lodges for sleeping, and open but sheltered verandas.

La casa ha un aspetto discreto. Come casa Kaufmann, ha una pianta a croce, ma gli ambienti privati sono separati con minor nettezza dal resto dell’edificio, come chiedeva la diversa struttura della famiglia Tremaine che contava cinque membri. Da lontano si vedono solo gli spioventi del tetto, che determinano, del resto, l’intera “facciata”. Avvicinandosi, si notano d’improvviso le mura in pietra del cortile interno e dell’ala riservata agli ospiti.
Questa casa è unica nell’opera di Neutra: combina leggerezza e gravità, concretezza e trasparenza, opera umana e “crescita” organica e naturale. The house is attractive. Like the Kaufmann house, it is cruciform in shape, but the private areas are separated less clearly from the rest of the building, to suit the different structure of the five-member Tremaine family.From a distance, only the roof pitches are visible, and in effect delimit the entire façade. As one gets closer, suddenly the stone wall of the internal courtyard and the guest wing come into view.
This is a unique example of Neutra’s work, combining as it does lightness and gravity, solidity and transparency, man-made structure and organic, natural ‘growth’. A perfect symbiosis of construction techniques and architectural expression.The terraced floors continue from inside the house to the exterior, eliminating the distinction between the interior and the garden.
