GEORGE WEINBERGER BIOGRAPHY

2013 FOUNDER’S DAY HONOREE

George Weinberger - A Dedicated Man ofDistinction

Few individuals have demonstrated thezeal, commitment and dedication to

Temple Beth Shalom as has the exemplary person who is ourMen’s Club Founder’s Day honoree today, George Weinberger.Never one to retreat from a righteously-felt and firmly-heldposition, George often sacrificed being merely popular for whathe perceived to be the greater good for the shul - and all of us atTemple Beth Shalom have long been and continue to be thegrateful recipients of George’s grit and determination.

Born in Bayonne, the much younger of two brothers, Georgevividly recalls going to shul with his modern-Orthodox maternalgrandfather Max, z”l”. In fact, George was deeply inspired by thisgrandfather who not only was a large supporter of the synagogue, but who volunteered so much of his precious time in thatendeavor. In addition, George’s mother, Mary, z”l”, was an activemember of the Jewish Community Center of Bayonne. Fondmemories of the strong Jewish community of Bayonne and theoutpouring of Jewish humanity in the streets during the HighHolidays even now brings a smile to George’s face (Yes, truth betold, George DOES smile). During these early years, Georgehelped in the lumberyard of the family building-materials business.Growing up in the immediate aftermath of the Great Depression,

like so many others, George’s father, an accountant, (vot den!)made thrift the ultimate virtue.

As a very young man, George attended many New York Yankeesgames with his fervid Yankee fan-father, Joseph, z”l, “whoregaled George with stories of all of the great teams of the 1920’sand 1930’s. Is it any wonder that George became a diehard, lifelong Yankees fan, now passing that tradition along to his owngrandson, Sam?

An excellent student, George graduated from Fairleigh DickinsonUniversity in 1960.

Having launched his career as an accountant, George commencedwhat evolved into a brilliant 46 yearlong career with J.H.Cohn &Co. Eventually, George rose to be a partner in 1969. Extremelycompetent in his professional skills, George has inspired loyaltyand trust in so many of his lifelong clients, for whom he has beenlike a wise and benign family member, serving many clients, literally, from womb to tomb.

George met his beloved Sheila, a Jersey City girl, on a blind datein 1962. The “friendly and kind” Sheila shared so many similarinterests such as fine music and Broadway theater with the“generous and thoughtful” George. Thus, it was “beshert” thatthis loving couple would marry at the Clinton Manor in Newarkin May of 1963, almost 50 years ago. Blessed with the birth oftheir son, Mark and daughter, Sheryl, the Weinbergers first livedin Bayonne for almost twelve years, before relocating toLivingston in 1975, for its excellent public schools, and its vibrantJewish community. Shortly thereafter, the Weinberger familyjoined Temple Beth Shalom.

What aspect of Temple first called to George? Fortunately, it wasour Men’s Club. It was there that George immersed himself innumerous Men’s Club projects. So capable and passionate aboutMen’s Club was George, it should come as no surprise that, afterwalking up the proverbial leadership ladder, George served aspresident from 1991 to 1993. Knowing that no one person canperform all tasks oneself our Honoree realized that the key to asuccessful organization was choosing the very best people withwhom to work. Following that time period, George involvedhimself on a regional level with the Federation of Jewish Men’sClubs, with his signal accomplishment having been his effortswhich resulted in much expanded attendance at the Annual Manof the Year Dinners. As a result, George Weinberger waspresented with the Northern New Jersey Region MeritoriousService Award in 1997.

George’s tremendous contributions to Temple Beth Shalomconsiderably accelerated during his six year tenure as Treasurer.Arriving in this position at a time when our shul faced financialdifficulty — and ably assisted by our Assistant Treasurer, MegSheerin to whom George gives much deserved credit — TBS’sfinances turned around through the institution of strict budgetarycontrols. To achieve this success, and utilizing his innateaccounting skills, George knew that our synagogue had to beoperated in a business-like fashion, to the extent that a templecould do so.

Who would have guessed that George Weinberger’s greatestcontribution to ensure the future of TBS would still lie ahead?Yet, during George’s term as Temple Vice President for thefollowing six years, not only did he fully subscribe to an officer’sresponsibility to attend most Temple events and to maximallycommit financially, he would perform invaluable service waybeyond the call of duty. Therefore, along with other forwardminded Temple leaders, - and most importantly TBS president

Howard Muser - George did recognize the pressing need toreplace the outmoded school facilities as well as to obtain a much-needed second social hail and related retrofitting. With thosemarching orders, George embarked upon a grueling three-year-plus stint as the Temple’s facilitator to the construction manager.Fortunately for all of us, George’s work commitments at JH Cohnlessened (due to semi-retirement) just as this massive projectunfolded. Through sheer determination and incredibleexpenditure of his personal time virtually on a daily basis, Georgetruly made the improvement of the synagogue his overridingmission, with the able assistance of Howard Attermann, SamGershwin and other Temple members involved in the buildingtrade. Admittedly, George does recollect that he was frequentlyon the receiving end of a gamut of critical and sometimes evencontradictory remarks, at times being called stingy, to at othertimes being called a spendthrift. In the final analysis, however, themagnificent new building completed in 2004 made all of George’shard-working efforts completely worthwhile. Like so many TBSmembers, George does smile (once again!), and does feel sothrilled when he walks through the school building, seeing thehappy faces of our children and grandchildren in this gleamingand spacious structure.

Having scaled back his accounting practice over the followingyears, (to the chagrin of his trusting clients), George has nowretired, but he is certainly NOT retiring in spirit. With his longhistory at Temple Beth Shalom, George still serves as a mentor toour Men’s Club and as a welcome advisor to our currentsynagogue leadership. A loving husband, a proud father and adoting grandfather to Jordana, age 13, and Sam, age 12, GeorgeWeinberger, our distinguished honoree, deserves all the accoladesand more for the love and devotion he has bestowed upon us allat Temple Beth Shalom. Therefore, let us all wish George both aRefuah Shleimah from his current health issues and, mostimportantly, a hearty Yasher Koach for all he has done forTemple Beth Shalom!

In 2007, the FJMC began the presentation of annual Quality ClubAwards to Men’s Clubs which had demonstrated broad participationin FJMC and regional events and conducted a varied schedule oflocal programming (the Quality Club Awards do not measure thequalitative aspects of programming; that is the role of the TorchAwards competition). Participation in the most important FJMCprograms and organizational requirements are required, whileothers are optional to allow for local and club differences.

Men’s Club earned a Quality Club Award in the following years:
