The first quarter is always a time of preparation for us. With Akademy as our central community event in summer, there are a lot of things which need to be put into place to make this event the energetic place where people come together from all over the world to work on KDE and its various projects. This special feeling of getting together, meeting old and new friends, and feeling the inspiring vibe of the community, the momentum which drives free software, this needs a carefully prepared environment. This year Akademy is taking place in Bilbao. We have an excellent team there which does magic to provide this environment, together with all the other community members who take on the task of organizing Akademy. This year we have a special setup for Akademy, because we joined forces with the Qt community and will hold the Qt Contributors Summit together with Akademy. This is a unique opportunity to get Qt and KDE contributors together and discuss and work on common ground. KDE wouldn't be here without Qt, and Qt wouldn't be what it is today without KDE. Maintaining these common roots and nurturing our communities and what we can do together is one of the cornerstones of our future. This joint meeting also takes preparation. There are many more things which need preparation; we had an extended board meeting in March to work on some of these topics. Extended means that the board invited a number of other members to work on specific topics. We kicked off the Financial Working Group, discussed fund-raising activities and how we will approach them. We worked on publishing more information about KDE e.V. and the board to make our work more transparent. You will hear more about all this over the course of the year. There were also some fantastic activities this quarter. For example, there was the meetup of our awesome Indian community, and the PIM and Calligra communites had their annual sprints. Read more about all this in this quarterly report. We are looking forward to the coming quarters of 2013 and the exciting things they will bring for KDE. Be prepared. KDE INDIAPradeepto Bhattacharya

KDE India is a purely volunteer effort by a group ofcontributors based in India.

A small bit of history. Indian involvement in The KDEProject is as old as the Project itself. Sirtaj Singh Kang, who was a student based in Australia, was one of thefirst contributors to KDE. After returning to India, Sirtajwent around the country spreading the word of KDEby speaking at various events. During FOSS.IN/2005,Sirtaj along with Till Adam, a core KDE PIM hacker, and a group of individuals came together to form aninformal group called “KDE India”. On 2nd December2005, in a Birds of a Feather session at FOSS.IN/2005,it was decided to create a mailing list, an IRC channeland a website for Indian contributors. Till got all theinfrastructure issues sorted out by talking to the KDESysadmin team. Soon we had our own mailing list,IRC channel and temporary website (in.kde.org) sincethe kde.in domain was not available. Later the KDEe.V. Board kindly bought the domain and still owns it.

This is how things started moving. I started going tovarious colleges and FOSS events to speak about TheKDE Project (as it was known then). Between 2006and 2010, I pretty much went to every FOSS event inIndia I could afford or was invited to. I rememberFebruary of 2009 when I was away from home everyweekend speaking about KDE at a different city inIndia. We got excellent support from FOSS.INorganizers, where we have organized a KDE mini-conference pretty much every year since 2007. OtherFOSS events also supported us. A bunch of currentIndian contributors met us first at one of these events. We were fortunate that the KDE e.V Board sponsoredone or two KDE developers to travel to India to speakat these conferences. Eventually we reached a criticalmass of contributors, if you can call it that. Programslike Google Summer of Code and Season of KDE sawgood and healthy participation from India. Many ofthe new contributors stay past their internships.Akarsh, Shantanu, Vishesh, Sinny, Rohan have allstayed for good. It was really great to have a fullhouse at the KDE booth at events.

During each of these events we did somethingdifferent and stretched our limits. One example wasgetting the “KDE Booklet” done. It was a super effortby the team. My initial idea was to make a bunch ofsimple flyers. But with the amount of content theteam built up, it soon became a full 32 page colorbooklet. Thanks to Lakshya Srivastava who

volunteered to design it and Sirtaj whose companysponsored the printing costs, we could print and shipthe booklet. The KDE booklet travelled far and wide toAsia, Europe, North America and Africa. Thank youAde for being the awesomest messenger ever. We areproud that the booklet was the inspiration for theeven-more-awesome official KDE Booklet.

This was when I set out to fulfill my long cherisheddream of having a KDE event in India (ok to behonest, I wanted to organize Akademy in India, but Iknew it was probably not economically feasible ).Sometime in late 2010, I believed that it was the righttime to go ahead and execute the plans to fulfill thedream. I spoke to a few people and then finally theKDE e.V Board who extended their full support. Sowith a bunch of folks none of whom had everorganized a conference, we started organizing one.We learned the ropes as we moved ahead, securedsponsorships, convinced speakers to come to India, made it happen! “conf.kde.in” took place betweenMarch 9th and March 13th 2011. Earlier this year, ateam led by Yash Shah organized the KDE Meetup inGujarat.

Going forward, we plan to register KDE India as anon-profit society according to Indian laws. Thatwould give us some legal standing here and wouldalso help to secure sponsorship for events. Thenumber of KDE contributors has been increasingslowly every year thanks to Google Summer of Code(GSoC) and Season of KDE (SoK). It is reallyheartening to see that many of these students stillcontribute after their internship is over. My hope andcommitment is that we can build up a self-sustainingsystem here in India so that these KDE contributorscan continue to work on their projects even after theyleave college or university. It would be awesome tohave more local KDE events during the year and onebig event each year.

An article on KDE India can never be done withoutthanking people who have stood by us since wecame into existence. The KDE e.V. Board, Sirtaj SinghKang, Till Adam, Atul Chitnis (RIP), Swati Sani (Sanisoft),FOSS.IN, Prashanth Udupa (VCreate Logic), RajeevSebastian, Madhusudhan C.S., Santosh Vattam,Krishna Bharadwaj, Aditya Kavoor, KamleshwarMorjal, Supreeth Vattam, Abhishek Patil and manyothers. Thank you all.

SUPPORTED MEMBER ACTIVITIES

KDE E.V. BOARD MEETING

BERLIN, GERMANY23-24 Mar 2013

Apart from bi-weekly conferencecalls, the KDE e.V. board ofdirectors usually meets in person2-3 times per year. The mostrecent meeting took place in Berlinon the weekend of March 23-24.The meeting was hosted at theWikimedia Germany office. Thegoal of the meeting was to followup on the plans that were made atthe last board meeting inNovember 2012, and get workdone on various items.

To accomplish that we held themeeting as an extended boardmeeting inviting individualmembers of the community inorder to share the workload, involve the membership, andpromote a scalable way of runningKDE e.V.'s business.

From the board Lydia, Agustin,Cornelius, and Pradeeptoparticipated. In addition to that,Claudia Rauch, KDE e.V. businessmanager, and Till Adam, MirkoBöhm and Jos Poorvliet joined forparts of the meeting.

Fundraising

Fundraising is an essential part ofthe KDE e.V. activities as itprovides us with the financialmeans to execute on supportingthe community. The board isworking on professionalizing thefund-raising activities in order tomitigate risks, and grow beyondwhat we do now.

During the board meeting, wediscussed the current strategy -reaching the KDE "friends andfamily" via dot.kde.org and blogs. In the future we want to expandthat and reach out to people whoare active in the community, but

also address users and peoplewho are interested in KDE not onlybecause of the software, but alsobecause by supporting KDE theyare contributing to the public goodby supporting Free Software andFree Culture.

For specific activities KDE e.V. isplanning to do focusedsponsorship drives like the one forthe Randa sprint in Summer 2012.

To professionalize our fund-raisingthe plan is to work with otherorganizations and consultants fromthe non-profit space to improveour tool infrastructure and to buildup knowledge and skills in generalfund-raising.

The group also discussed concreteactions and next steps. It wasdecided to implement CiviCRM asa tool for managing therelationships with donors andsupporters, and fund-raisingactivities.

Another topic that was discussedwas if KDE e.V. wants to apply forgrants to do development. Sincethere were a couple of requests inthe past, there seems to be a needfor this. This, however, wouldmean that KDE e.V. needs tochange its policy and buildstructures to handle paperworkand administration of suchprojects. This is currently notpossible, but might be a strategicmove for the future of theorganization.

Financial Working Group

This board meeting was also thekick-off meeting of the financialworking group of KDE e.V.Attendees were AgustínBethencourt, Mirko Böhm, and TillAdam. The purpose of thisworking group is to work with theboard and specifically thetreasurer on an ongoing basis to

ensure the fiscal side of e.V. issound beyond the sanity checkingdone by the auditors once a year. This involves structuring the wayexpenses and income are trackedamong other things. Guidance andoversight remains with thetreasurer.

In this first meeting, the workinggroup members focussed oncreating an improved cost codestructure. Currently cost codes arealready in use, but the categoriesare too broad and poorlyseparated from the accountstructure. The goal is to haveevery invoice and spendingassociated with a cost center. These cost centers all havebudgets associated, allowing theboard and the working groupmembers to keep an overview ofwhether money is spent asbudgeted and to notice whenbudgets are in danger of beingexceeded or need to be adjusted.

With the budgeting and trackingbased on the cost code structure, the reporting on those budgetnumbers will also be structuredalong the same lines. The idea isfor the reporting to be largelyautomatic, given up-to-date andcost-coded accounting. This willhelp to reduce the workload of thetreasurer and make things moretransparent.

Akademy 2013

A good part of the board meetingwas also spent on taking adecision about the first round oftravel sponsorship requests forAkademy 2013. Each year, KDEe.V. offers to sponsor travel andaccommodation costs forAkademy attendees that wouldotherwise not be able to travel tothe Akademy location. In this firstround, requests for 27 people wereapproved.

The board also discussed topicsfor the upcoming annual generalassembly of the association thatwill take place as part of Akademyon 12 July 2013 in Bilbao.

conf.kde.in 2013

Pradeepto Bhattacharya informedhis board colleagues that he islooking into organizing anotherconf.kde.in in October/November2013 or February/March 2014. Thedates for the event depend onavailability of venue, volunteertime, sponsors, local factors etc.

The model of the last conf.kde.in(raising local money through feesto cover local expenses, coveringtravel costs and internationalsponsors through KDE e.V.) wasapproved by the board. Therewere discussions about thepossibility of creating a local KDEorganization to handle events likethis in the future. KDE e.V. couldgive support for that, the initiativeand decisions need to be withlocal volunteers, though.

Presentation of KDE e.V.

The board also spent some timeduring the meeting to brainstormhow KDE e.V. could be promotedand presented more effectively. While the association plays animportant role in the KDEcommunity, we often have toexplain why it's there, what itdoes, who is involved, and howothers can contribute.

The group together with JosPoortvliet worked on anexplanation of KDE e.V. that canbe used as a template for thewebsite and other channels (flyers, presentations, etc.). The goal is tocreate a detailed document, aone-page summary, and a shortone-paragraph version.

Perhaps the most effective tool topresent KDE e.V. activities is thequarterly report. It was discussedhow to make even better use ofthe reports, perhaps by creating aprinted version of all reports forspecial occasions or donors.

The KDE e.V. website needs somelove to be more clear, providemore information, and be easier tomaintain. Discussion about what todo resulted in these topics:

* Improve the structure of thewebsite

* Get a better design (includingphotos)

* Add a quick links areaeverywhere (forms, donate, contact)

* Move to WordPress

* German translation of at leastkey parts of the website (importantfor local donors)

In terms of transparency, the planis to add more details to thewebsite about the people runningKDE e.V.'s business.

Next meeting

In-person board meetings areessential for enabling the board todiscuss important topics and workas a team. They provide anopportunity for high-bandwidthconversations and concentratedwork, which is hard to achievewith electronic media acrosslocations and time zones. Theboard will get together atAkademy, and we plan to haveanother in-person board meetingafter Akademy with the boardmember newly elected at thegeneral assembly.

DeveloperSprints

KDE PIM NEW YEAR MEETING

BERLIN, GERMANY1-3 March 2013

Jos Poortvliet

Once most people had arrived atthe KDAB offices in Berlin, the KDEPIM sprint started around 4 onFriday afternoon with anintroduction by Till Adam. Hewelcomed everyone and issued awarning: there were only one-and-a-half crates of beer and all KDABattempts at ordering more hadfailed. The participants would haveto take care of this themselves!

Friday beginnings

Cornelius then kicked off theintroductions. The introductionssuggested an in-crowd meme of "Ido some random Kolab stuff" withJeroen and Kevin claiming to "playaround with IMAP", Volker (TheGuru) topped everyone bymentioning that he's "done apatch or two to Akonadi". Nobodybothered being more modest thanthat. Following the introductions, tasks were brainstormed andwritten on sticky notes in the'TODO' area on the whiteboard.

Work started and fun as well. Inthe hallway, the fussball tableswere busy. With over 30participants, the hacking roomcouldn't hold everyonecomfortably. David, coming late, even had to bring his own table tothe meeting and Ingo arrived justin time for dinner at 19:00. We hadour evening meal at an Asianplace. There was a little troublefitting in so many people but it

5

was fun. A Spaniard had to tell theIndian guy what to eat ... We'llleave the results to yourimagination.

Saturday continuations

On Saturday, Popcorn, Jos's dog, once again joined the sprint andattempted to help the PIM hackershunt bugs while simultaneouslyentertaining them. During thecourse of discussions, it wasdecided to drop the KDEPIMcoding style for the KDE Libscoding style. And a list of ideas forGoogle Summer of Code wasbrainstormed. Till gave an updateon PIM/KDE on Win/Mac,promising an installer Coming RealSoon™. There was also talk aboutFrameworks 5; it was decided towait until the dust has settled a bitbefore taking KDE PIM fully in thatdirection. In some areas however, there will be movement right away

as kdepimlibs is already beingcompiled against Frameworks 5and some Time/Date-related codeis going into Qt5. There was aNepomuk discussion about how toimprove performance and give asmoother experience to users. TheSaturday evening meal was in aGreek place near the office.

Sunday endings

End users were again the focus ofthe marketing meeting on Sunday.Much work has been done latelyto modernize the Kontactarchitecture. The quest for thissprint was to find the remainingmajor blocks for Kontact users. The group made a list of the mostserious issues; anything that can'tbe fixed will be disabled until aproper fix can be found.

Negative attitudes about KMail arefrustrating, especially when theycome from within the Community.

Yes, KMail has been around awhile, and people would enjoy anew mail client based on Akonadi(which shouldn't be too hard). Butvenerable KMail is still by far thebest Free Software mail client onLinux, years ahead of thecompetition. The negativity feeds avicious cycle—KMail can beimproved, but development workis not satisfying when this generalattitude prevails. So developersdon't want to work on it.

The group discussed ideas forpromoting "eat our own dogfood",including "I use KMail" and "I havea good Kontact experience"stickers. Popcorn especiallyenjoyed this discussion.Suggestions for artwork arewelcome!

There were discussions about thefuture of calendaring, and a firstdraft of QML components was

Page 6: COMMUNITY REPORT - KDE e.V. · 3 SUPPORTED MEMBER ACTIVITIES KDE E.V. BOARD MEETING BERLIN, GERMANY 23-24 Mar 2013 Apart from bi-weekly conference calls, the KDE e.V. board of directors

6

created for calendaring. SandroKnauß had been annoyed withissues about encrypting andsigning emails with unicodecharacters and had joined thesprint in order to fix those. Whichhe did! And there were manymore subjects as well as hackingand coding, fussball, and the deepphilosophical inquiries expected atany KDE Sprint. As a relativelynew participant remarked: I can'twait for the upcoming Akademy.

These sprints are awesome andeverybody says "wait until you'vebeen at Akademy, it's 10 timesmore cool".

Conclusions

All in all, barking, epic fussballlosses and grouphugs included, itwas a fun and productive meetingagain. More happened than isreported here ... in summary, good code was written and thereis significant progress with KDEPIM.

The decision to get as many fixesas possible into the 4.10.2 releasewill benefit users of most majordistributions in the short term. Inthe longer run, code is beingwritten to bring in newfunctionality as well, giving userssomething to look forward to.

We all look forward to meetingagain at Akademy to assessprogress and work further onbringing KDE PIM to enlightened,freedom-loving people around theworld.

CALLIGRA SPRING SPRINT

BANGALORE AND ESSEN8-10 March 2013

Boudewijn Rempt

For the first Calligra sprint since2011, the Calligra communityassembled at the Thoughtworksoffice in Bangalore, India, and theLinux Hotel in Essen, Germany, fora long weekend of discussions andhacking. Six people gathered inBangalore and another eleven metin Essen.

The sprint was sponsored by KDEe.V., KO GmbH and Thoughtworks,as well as individual developers.Bangalore had a four and a halfhour lead on Essen, and hadalready started taking apartCalligra Active when the rest of theteam assembled in the Linux Hotel. We kept both teams connectedusing IRC, piratepads, google docsand google hangouts - even if thesound often failed, having theother location on a projector gavea real sense of togetherness.

Compared to previous sprints, thissprint was much more technical. We delved deep into the basicCalligra architecture to figure outhow to make Calligra ready for thenext decade (our codebasealready dates back to the previouscentury!), we had initialdiscussions on moving to Qt5/KDEFrameworks 5, on betterintegration in OSX, on improvingthe way we use git. Someapplications have becomeunmaintained, and we startedlooking for new maintainers. Therewas a mini-Krita sprint as well withdiscussions about recording, macros and actions in Krita.Everyone was busy!

But of course that was not all.Pizza was consumed, guitars wereplayed and many people who

hadn't seen each other before, orhadn't seen each other for over ayear got together and had a goodand productive time! And welcometo Somsubhra—a newcomer toCalligra development—who got hisKDE developer id this weekend!

On leaving Essen, I was reallyconvinced that this was one of thebest Calligra sprints ever, and thatCalligra has a great future to lookforward to.

Lydia Pintscher

Every year FOSDEM marks one ofthe highlights of the Free Softwarecalendar. It's the event wherethousands of Free Softwarecontributors from all over theworld meet to plan, discuss andhear what other projects aredoing. For at least the fifth year ina row, KDE was present again witha well-attended booth showingPlasma Active, Marble, Kolab andmore. Together with other desktopprojects Enlightenment, Gnome,Razor, Unity and XFCE, KDE alsoorganized a very successfuldevroom with talks about windowmanagers, usability testing, buildsystems accessibility and tutorialson the latest technologies acrossthe stack. The neighboring QtProject booth also brought manyvisitors that were interested in bothKDE and Qt.

Thanks to all the people thathelped out at the booth!

KDE INDIA MEETUP

GANDHINAGAR

23-24 February 2013

Yash Shah

The month of February saw theadvent of a new era withenthusiastic students who showedsigns of budding future developersby taking the first step - attendingKDE MEETUP 2013 organized onthe beautiful campus of DhirubhaiAmbani Institute of Informationand Communication Technology(DA-IICT), Gandhinagar. KDEMeetup held on the 23rd and 24thof February, 2013 was the largestKDE event in India after conf.kde.inin 2011 and the largest technologyevent to be held in Gujarat.Theevent was a huge phenomenonwith the participation of over 350students from the far ends of thecountry, including Delhi, Durgapur,Mumbai and many more. Themeetup started with an"Introduction to KDE" talk byPradeepto Bhattacharya, a KDEe.V. Board member. He introducedthe audience to the KDECommunity and its technologies. The next session by VisheshHanda was an introduction to Qtand Git, followed by a hands-onsession where the students weretaught how to execute all that theyhad learned in the talk. This wasthe end of Day One. Everyone left

the campus eager to learn awhole lot more. Day Two saw talkson the KDE EduSuite, PlasmaWorkspaces and Nepomuk byRishabh Arora, Shantanu TusharJha and Vishesh Handarespectively. The students werealso encouraged to participate inSeason of KDE and GoogleSummer of Code. Hands-onsessions were organized on boththe days after lunch where allthose who participated weretaught Qt framework, how to buildand modify the code used in KDEapplications and also to applytheir own changes to them. KDEcontributors Sinny Kumari, AdityaBhatt, Rohan Garg and JigarRaisinghani volunteered to helpwith the hands-on session.

Organizing KDE Meetup was agreat experience for all the

volunteers because as students, itwas the first time organizing sucha large scale event. Every storyhas its own heroes. KDE Meetuphad not one but almost 20 ofthose who were led by a proudKDE contributor Yash Shah. Therewas only a month for all thepreparation but due to these greatheroes, it was possible. Theyvisited more than 10 colleges, sentemails to more than 100 collegesand spread the word about KDEMeetup through word of mouth aswell as through intensive blogging.Venue arrangement, ensuringinternet access, food arrangementsand accommodation, delegates, tshirts, certificates and many otherthings - all was planned andorganized very well.

One of the major highlights of theevent - the Bardoli incident - is an

Page 8: COMMUNITY REPORT - KDE e.V. · 3 SUPPORTED MEMBER ACTIVITIES KDE E.V. BOARD MEETING BERLIN, GERMANY 23-24 Mar 2013 Apart from bi-weekly conference calls, the KDE e.V. board of directors

8

inspiration and an indication of thededication of the members of theKDE community to spreadknowledge among all and toensure that everyone is a part ofthe community and that no onefeels left out. Many enthusiasticstudents from Bardoli gave uptheir weekends. They came fromfar away places and were allenthusiastic to make the most ofthe event. In spite of traveling along distance accompanied byfatigue, they did their best to workalong with the speakers but itdidn’t work out for them and theydecided to leave the event. Theorganizers convinced them to stay. The next day, special sessionswere organized just for thesestudents and all of them showedup with renewed spirit. Theyquickly caught up with all that theyhad missed and were eager tolearn more.

Also, in the evening of the firstday, we celebrated with a KDE4.10 release party. It was so coolcelebrating the latest releasetogether with KDE Contributorsand the volunteers for the KDEMeetup 2013.

At the end of the event, there wasa newfound inspiration within allthe participants. They had thedesire to contribute, to be a part ofthe largest and friendliestcommunity in the world. This wasa change, a different sort ofexperience for the students whichrelieved them from the usualdrudgery and boredom of collegeeducation which doesn’t exposethem to real world programming. The event lived up to its goals—tohelp people know about KDE andto provide them with the basicskills and techniques so that theycan contribute to free and opensoftware. The community speakerswere warm and approachable.Students were encouraged to talk

with them and ask as much asthey could. This event left thestudents asking for more. All thatthey had in their minds was tolearn, explore and innovate. Createsomething that could be the nextrevolution.

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS

BARCELONA

25-28 February 2013

Boudewijn Rempt

Krita Sketch developer Dan LeinirTurthra Jensen and I went to theMobile World Congress 2013 inBarcelona to show Krita Sketch atthe Intel App Developer booth. Thebooth was pretty much perfectlyplaced, near the entrance of thewhole show, at the entrance of thebiggest hall, and we were right atthe entrance to the Intel booth.

Dan and I had shirts with the Kritamascot image done by Tyson Tan,and those were quite attentiongrabbing in all their cuteness!Pretty much everyone who sawthe shirt had to smile.

Apart from some getting-startedproblems, the demos went well.We had a good story and showingthe transformation tool video

Deevad had made got us lots ofattention. Most people wereimpressed, really impressed. Wedid get a number of questions like"is that photoshop?", or "are youreally competing withphotoshop?". The Free Softwareaspect didn't really grab anyone'sfancy, but the free to downloadpart amazed people. This was thefirst time we have really shownKrita to a broad audience outsidethe Free Software world, and itwent quite well. I pointed severalgroups of students to theupcoming Libre Graphics Meetingin Madrid, they were reallyinterested in that as well.

On leaving MWC on Thursday, Icame away with severalconclusions:

* a good Windows version is reallyimportant.

* Krita can, at least as a demo, hold its own outside the FreeSoftware world. We can competewith other vendors and we shouldgo to other events, instead oflimiting ourselves to Free Softwareconferences like LGM andAkademy.

All in all, good fun and a goodopportunity to make Krita betterknown. Thanks to Intel for invitingus to show Krita Sketch and Krita!
