Rob’s Ramblings Remember you are dust and

to dust you shall return… Promises – remember the promises you’ve made? With the imposition of ashes during worship on Ash Wednesday we prepare ourselves to live out the vows, the promises of our baptismal covenant more faithfully. You may ask why we begin each Lent with such a stark reminder of death on Ash Wednesday. The reason is baptism is about death first – dying to how we have been so we might rise with Christ. To be a disciple of Jesus is to aside our inherited patterns of life to learn those of Christ, to submit oneself to our teacher.

Ash Wednesday – which we observe with the folks of Vale UMC at COF on February 10 at 7:30 PM – begins our journey through Lent. This season we’ll be focusing in worship, in church school and in some small groups on some of Jesus “I AM” sayings found in the gospel of John.

I am the Bread of Life I am the Light of the World

I am the Good Shepherd I am the True Vine

I am the Way, the Truth and the Life I am the Resurrection and the Life.

Our series will help us answer an essential question of Christian faith, “Who do you say I am?” Each week we’ll learn more about who Jesus is, his connection to the God of Moses who spoke the first “I AM.”

I look forward to our journey together through this season. If you know a person who is exploring faith, this is a great time to invite them to join you at COF – you both will be blessed.

--- Grace & Peace, Pastor Rob

Celtic Evensong Worship and Communion Sunday, February 21 at 5:30 PM Quiet, meditative, contemplative are all characteristics of COF’s monthly Celtic Evensong Worship (occurring on the third Sunday of the month). The 60-minute worship is filled with long moments of silence, readings, music and prayer. If you ever say life is too busy or noisy and you never have time to sit still, this service is for you. Update from Justin White Last month we shared correspondence from Justin who used the break between the semesters he was teaching at University of Nevada-Reno to head to Greece to help with the refugees coming by boat. Below is an edited note since he’s returned home about one of the folks he worked with.

Annick van Kerkum was a coordinator and volunteer for the organization that I worked with on Lesvos (the Boat Refugee Foundation of the Netherlands) and she was there for a couple months. She has just returned to Leyden, the Netherlands. I met her on the street my first day there and then worked with her the following day, then the organization the rest of my time there. Needless to say, she is a great leader, gave an incredible amount of time and energy to this team and the refugees in a quiet and powerful way, is very level-headed and when it comes to creating a calm, functional, safe atmosphere for refugees arriving by boat -- she's the person for the job. If you need someone to make a joke, she is also the person for the job and is always ready. She also worked closely with the UN to develop protocols for the teams to follow in doing jobs for the refugees. Annick is well-versed to international affairs and has traveled/worked abroad in multiple places. The link below leads to an article that she wrote (she is a trained journalist) that was published in an American news outlet. http://www.tricornernews.com/node/44387 It isn't the typical blip of information. It is a nice piece of the deeper interactions and connections she felt/observed but reads very nicely and paints a good picture of the scene through emotions and reflections. Thanks, Annick, for all of your contributions and good work.

Strive to Drive COF just received $25 from the Virginia United Methodist Credit after Pastor Rob moved his auto loan there. You can do this same! “Strive to Drive” is a vehicle loan program benefiting local churches when members finance their vehicle purchase or refinance a vehicle loan from another lender. For more info, visit the credit union at www.vumcu.org

Lent Bible Study Lenten Fridays at 11AM at COF February 19 – March 25

This 6-week worship and study series will help us find and form an answer to the most essential question in the Christian faith, “Who do you say I am?” The “I Am” sayings of Jesus not only grab our imagination by revealing more about his purpose, they also shape our own Christian identity and connect us to the God of Moses, the Great I Am. Significant—

yet ordinary—images give us insightful ways to experience Jesus anew and to discover a God who is close and wants to be known! Meeting at Community of Faith and led by Pastor Rob, the study will deepen our experience of Lent.

General Conference 2016 By Pastor Rob Vaughn

Last June witnessed the elections of the 504 US delegates to the 2016 United Methodist General Conference, the top legislative body of the church. Virginia, one of the largest conferences in the denomination, elected 11 clergypersons and 11 laypersons at Annual Conference to be delegates to the conference; I am one of them.

During the snowstorm last month, a couple of us from each annual conference met in Portland for a briefing on all the major issues before the May gathering. There will be 5 other briefings around the globe before May. Each month from now forward, our Virginia delegation will meet to get prepared for all the legislation coming in May as well as to prepare for this summer’s jurisdictional conference in western North Carolina whose main business is the election and assignment of bishops.

This May, I’ll spend two weeks in Portland where the conference meets May 10-20, 2016, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. The center is billed as the largest convention facility in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Some 864 delegates, elected from around the world, will gather to set policy and direction for the church, as well as handle other important business. Meeting every four years, General Conference is the only entity that speaks for the denomination. The United Methodist Book of Discipline, updated every four years, incorporates changes made by General Conference.

There will be lots of great worship – 22 choirs will be singing. Virginia’s, Shenandoah University gospel choir will be performing at one session.

Much of the first week is divided into 13 legislative committees – I’m serving with the one on “Independent Commissions” whose work is to deal with all petitions and resolutions relating to commissions and ecumenical concerns. The commissions include Archives and History, Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns, Communications, Religion and Race, the Status and Role of Women, and United Methodist Men. Ecumenical concerns relate to the denomination’s membership in or relationship with the World Methodist Council, the World Council of Churches, other councils and consultations of churches, and the American Bible Society.

There is a lot of reading and if you would like to check out some of the information, materials for General Conference can be found on the web as indicated below.

For a comprehensive booklet on General Conference visit: http://s3.amazonaws.com/Website_Properties/general-conference/2016/documents/gc2016-guide.pdf

For a webpage filled with videos and information about the worldwide gathering, General Conference, visit http://www.umc.org/topics/general-conference-2016

The Advanced Daily Christian Advocate (ADCA) contains the agenda, rules, delegate listings, petitions, reports from the general agencies/commissions and study committees, information for delegates, and codes of conduct for the General Conference and is available in multiple languages at: http://www.umc.org/who-we-are/gc2016-advance-edition-daily-christian-advocate

Please keep all in your prayers during these months of preparation and I’ll keep you updated with our work.
