The 59th season of the Hertel North Park Youth Baseball League will open this Saturday morning, May 11th. The season kicks off, in the usual fashion, with a parade down Hertel Avenue. Starting at 10:00am at the corner of Hertel and Saranac, the par-ticipants will march east on Hertel to the diamonds of Shoshone Park. The league is made up of 65 teams (boys and girls ranging in age from
five to thirteen) represent-ing the major league teams,
all wearing new t-shirts and caps. For some, this is
the first time they are ex-periencing the cameraderie
the league instills. An annual tradi-tion, the children will be led by their coaches, the Buffalo Police and the Buffalo Fire De-partment, en-route to Shoshone. Once at the park, everyone will gather around diamond one. Announcements will be made, the national anthem will be sung, then everyone will yell

‘Arsenic & Old Lace’
Just for fun, imagine “Arsenic & Old Lace” as an episode of “Criminal Minds,” with the scrump-tious Garcia rattling her keyboard and saying “Yes, babycakes, Brewster, Brewster, I’ve got some-thing here but you’re not gonna’ believe it, 12 miss-ing persons in Brooklyn, and they all….” Sisters Abby and Mar-tha have guided a dozen would-be boarders to “a better place.” Nephew Jonathan has similarly reduced the surplus pop-ulation, but with malice aforethought. Teddy, well, he’s OK, it’s just that he thinks he’s Theodore Roosevelt. But Mortimer, he’s really the sicko– a theater critic! These happiest homi-cides in theatrical history are putting more smiles on the faces that lurk around the Niagara Regional The-atre Guild’s Ellicott Creek Playhouse. One show has sold out and for many oth-
ers tickets are harder to come by than a quick fix for strychnine. The stage is beautifully set and furnished for the late 30s (Rocket Man rec-ognized pieces from his garage sale). Director Les Bailey has a great-looking cast, sumptuous-ly garbed by costumier Nancy Watts. Every ring of the doorbell – this is a door-slamming farce with manners – comes on cue, triumph enough in the world of for-the-love-of-it theater. Peg Merrill and Betsy Ross are a fine contrast as the innocently murderous aunts, oozing naivety. Bob Aquila brings to Teddy just a drop of whine, a hint of sadness in his madness, a nice touch. As minister’s daughter Elaine, Carolyn Mazierski is breathtak-ingly lusty, taking “love thy neighbor” to places the text may not endorse. Joe Cassidy seems an appropriate catch as critic
The Adventures of...
Rocket Manby Doug Smith
Mortimer, Chris Turton has a nice sideways sneer as the malicious Jonathan and Tim Bookhagen has Peter Lorre sound down cold as plastic surgeon Einstein, who made the world safe for Botox. Playwright Joseph Kes-selring – whose bios refer vaguely to a mid-20s gig with “an amateur group in Niagara, NY (sic)” – of-fers a lot to careful listen-ers, satirical jibes at world politics, office feuds, the competence of critics and the density of police in-vestigators. “Criminal Minds” would get him for that. Wheels up in 30! The serial laugh-ter continues through May 19, with a rare 3 p.m. matinee this Saturday. On a sadder note – Rodg-ers & Hammerstein might have put it this way: How do you close a school like Holy Angels? How do you see such class and shut it down? What will we ever do without our “Angels”? How can we face our day without a frown? Later, less poetry, more thoughts. Rocket Man ain’t Will Rogers, but he never met a Holy Angels grad he didn’t like. Fire back to Rocket Man via [email protected].
