WHY I GIVE TO CHLB

Jeannie Baker (Baker Family Foundation), George Knull, M.D. CHLB’s Chief of Staff, and Julie Knabe, wife of LA Supervisor Don Knabe, have been giving to Community Hospital Long Beach Foudation for years. But...why?

“CHLB is located strategically in Long Beach and serves patients from all over the city,” states Jeannie Baker. “When I think of Community Hospital it always brings a smile to my face with its dedicated physicians and compassionate, caring, professional staff and volunteers.”

“For some it is easy to write a check. For us, we want to know specifically where the funds are being used,” Baker commented. “We recently gave to the Emergency Department (ED) Challenge Campaign to up-grade and make our ED the most state-of-the-art emergency department in the city. You know exactly what that money is going to buy!”

George Knull, M.D. became Chief of Staff six months ago and is a doctor in Community Hospital’s ED. He has been at CHLB since 1982 when Jerry Hughes. M.D.(former head of our ED) recruited him. A native of Ohio and graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Knull came to California to serve his residency in internal medicine. He served that residency with Dennis Parmer, M.D. who recently retired (one of the heads of ED) from CHLB.

“I prefer giving to where I have connections,” states Knull. He has given to other charities but he continues, “I believe in giving larger sums to charities that I am connected with, like CHLB.” Dr. Knull lives in the area and feels that CHLB is “our neighborhood hospital.” He loves giving where he can see how his donation is being used!

Julie Knabe was born at Community Hospital Long Beach and as an “Original” she has helped us as a donor and is Co-Chair of our 2016 Dinner” Night at the Movies.” Julie and her husband, LA County Supervisor Don Knabe, have funded golf tournaments, annual dinners and special events for CHLB Foundation for many years.

“Giving to CHLB is very personal for me, I was born there,” comments Julie Knabe. “I grew up in the Los Altos area and some family members were hospitalized there.”

“I love the friendly, family-caring atmosphere,” continues Julie. “When CHLB closed, Don (as LA County Supervisor) took it very personally, even though he had never been hospitalized there. He worked extremely hard to get CHLB re-opened and back in business for our city.”

Julie and Don continue to donate to CHLB because “we love the small town atmosphere, being treated like family for the generations of families that live on the east side of our city.”

Legacy Wall 2015

Over 120 attended the Annual Legacy Wall Celebration honoring four individuals: Elsa Gildner, Nancy Eilers, Myrna Wigod and Patti Eckenroth, R.N..

The Legacy Wall allows the Committee (made up of former honorees) to thank those who have a minimum of 15 years of service at CHLB as an employee, volunteer, donor, medical staff member, board member; and demonstration of the “Community Spirit.” They each make CHLB the extraordinary healthcare facility it has been for 91 years.
