Dear Friends in Mission,It is with deep gratitude that CORE/El Centro shares with you the 2008 annual report. In 2008 CORE/El Centro focused on being and buildingcommunity in a broken world. A survey implemented by PowderhornPhilips Cultural Wellness Center found that across all cultural lines peoplefelt isolation was the greatest cause of illness. Thus we believe that healthycommunity is imperative and necessary when focusing on the healingprocess.

People from many different walks of life, survivors of trauma, special needsindividuals, cancer clients, low income individuals and people living with

chronic illnesses have all come to CORE/El Centro to heal. As part ofthe healing journey community has formed between clients, volunteers, staff and friends of CORE/El Centro.

In our everyday work to create change in the health of the community,we have witnessed healing stories that words are inadequate to describe. These stories give us the energy and the inspiration to invite allpeople to be a partner with us as we respond to the healing needs ofour broken world.

We hope that through pictures, personal stories, program descrip-tions, outcome data and financial snapshots we can share the vitality of our organization, our strong sense of community, and most importantly, the transformational impact we are having on the lives of our clients, their families and our world.

This year CORE/El Centro provided over 20,000 service hours andoffered health education/wellness in-services to over 3000 individu-als. There is no way that we would be having such a tremendous impact on the lives of so many without your support. Thank you forbelieving in our mission, being a part of our healing community, reaching out to our clients and walking with us on the journey of healing and transformation.

Gratefully,

Building Community Through CollaborationWe believe that collaboration is one of the keys for strong community effectiveness, and it encouragesthe development of fruitful partnerships among agencies and professionals that are working with theLatino Community. Together we can accomplish even more than we can singly. In our collaborative efforts, the whole of our transformative impact is truly greater than the sum of the parts.

Each year at our spring event, CORE Momentum, we are delighted to present three awards:

The Anita Jansson Inspiration Award given to an extraordinary volunteerThe Funders of Hope Award given to funders who believe in our missionThe Corporate Courage Award given to a business that has been exceptionally supportive

On April 30th as CORE/El Centro celebrated its 7th anniversary, we honored:

Anita Jansson Inspiration Award : Tom Pilarzyk - Yoga teacher

Volunteers are the backbone of CORE/El Centro; without the generosity and dedication ofour volunteers, we would never be able to offer the classes and the services that we do. Tom’s consistent long term service to CORE/El Centro and the many types of gifts that he hasshared with us are invaluable to our mission. Not only is he an incredible teacher, but healso has a sincere passion for and dedication to sharing the transformative power of yogawith all students. His deep wisdom of Yoga philosophy and the various aspects of the yogapath have enriched our program tremendously.

The Funders of Hope Award : The Greater Milwaukee Foundation

CORE/El Centro is a reality today because many individuals, foundations and organizationsbelieved in and supported it, one of whom is the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. Consis-tently since 2003, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation has believed in the impact of CORE/ElCentro’s programs and has financially supported them. We value not only their financial support, but also their volunteer activity and their friendship.

The Corporate Courage Award : Aurora Health Care

CORE/El Centro has been gifted over these years with the support of various businesses. Not only has Aurora Health Care supported us through sponsorships for our golf outing andfor CORE Momentum, but through our collaboration with the Walker’s Point CommunityClinic and The Healing Center. There are Aurora employees who are dependable volunteersat CORE/El Centro, and this past January the Aurora Accounting Department chose CORE/ElCentro as its charity of choice in its giving program. There are also Aurora employees whoeach year designate CORE/El Centro as the recipient of their donations through the AuroraHealth Care Employee Partnership Campaign.

Board members are volunteers and supporters of CORE/El Centro’scommunity. When talented people join together for a mission, the reality is more than a group of individuals; it is a team working together, interlinking and interweaving their skills and energy to accomplish a good that is larger than any individual effort done separately. More than the sum of their parts, Board members formcommunity to further CORE/El Centro’s mission and support the vision of its leaders.

“One of our primary grants for the

past five years has been to Walker’s

Point Community Clinic and

CORE/El Centro to enable these

two organizations to provide

quality health care and health

promotion programs to

low-income residents of

Milwaukee’s Southside. We have

been very impressed with the work

of these two agencies – especially

their commitment to serving

low-income, uninsured, and

homeless individuals. These two

agencies are trusted within their

neighborhood and are seen as a

valuable resource.”
