A MESSAGE FROM THE SHARKS FOUNDATION’S HONORARY DIRECTORS: What a fulfilling year we have enjoyed as Honorary Chairmen of the Sharks Foundation. In this role, we are fortunate to combine our passion for hockey and assisting in the community by giving back to those who so strongly support us. We are also proud to serve as an extension of San Jose Sharks majority owner Dr. Hasso Plattner and follow in his philanthropic footsteps. While the San Jose Sharks maintain an unwavering commitment to on-the-ice success, we fondly recognize how crucial a role we play in our community and how valuable it is for us to give back where we can. For that reason, the organization is extremely proud of all the work accomplished through the Sharks Foundation. The pledge of the Sharks Foundation lies in education, health and safety, and character development. From taking part in our annual fundraisers like Mystery Pucks and Fitness Faceoff to witnessing Sharks defenseman Brent Burns and his teammates shave their heads for charity, you have helped the Foundation echo their pledge to those areas and we are continuously overwhelmed by the generosity of Sharks fans and Sharks Foundation supporters throughout the Bay Area. These examples are a mere glimpse into our ongoing fundraising efforts that simply could not be achieved without supporters, sponsors and partners like you.

With more than $1 million given to charities last season, we want you to know how your donations were used. The 2014-15 San Jose Sharks Community Report highlights the many programs, events and special projects to which our players, coaches, alumni, executives, front office staff and the Sharks Foundation volunteered their time to last season. Through this outreach, we impacted hundreds of thousands of youth and families and made memories that will last a lifetime. The Sharks Foundation is already building on last year’s success with new events such as the inaugural Tank Tailgate at Fan Fest and we are continuing our commitment to existing programs and events, including our signature Sampling with the Sharks wine tasting fundraiser and the Sharks and Strikes bowling fundraiser as well.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Sharks Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of underserved youth and families in the community with an emphasis in the areas of education, health and safety, and

character development. The Foundation supplies emergency aid when appropriate, executes unique and relevant programming,

supports the advancement of youth hockey, and provides financial support and resources to organizations that enrich the

lives of those in need.

In 1994, the San Jose Sharks established the official charity arm of the team, the Sharks Foundation.

Each year the Foundation partners with individuals, corporations and funding partners in the community, who support its efforts to improve the lives of youth

and families in Santa Clara County. Funds received are allocated to the Foundation’s annual Grant Process and

numerous programs. Thanks to those donations, by the end of the 2014-15 season, the Sharks Foundation dispersed nearly $1.4 million in funding to support the

community. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed nearly $8.6 million to more than

160 non-profit organizations.

The Sharks Foundation hosts a number of unique fundraising events each season, allowing fans exclusive

access to Sharks players, coaches, broadcasters and alumni, all while raising funds for the Foundation.

During the 2014-15 season, the Foundation hosted six signature events.

The Sharks Foundation’s third annual Fitness Faceoff presented by Kaiser Permanente featured a 5k, 10k and Kids Fun Run and a 20-and 50-mile bike ride on Sunday, June 28, 2015.

SHARKS FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSICTo celebrate the start of the 2014-15 hockey season, golfers and members of the Sharks organization gathered at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose for the Sharks Foundation Golf Classic on September 16, 2014. With 190 participants, the event raised nearly $63,000 for the Sharks Foundation and has raised more than $723,000 during the past nine seasons. The event included the entire Sharks roster and coaching staff, as well as broadcasters, alumni, and S.J. Sharkie golfing alongside Sharks Foundation supporters.

BURNZIE’S BUZZCUT For the second straight year, Sharks defenseman Brent Burns, along with a number of his teammates shaved their heads and beards all in the name of charity. On November 3, 2014, Burns, Barclay Goodrow, Mirco Mueller, Joe Pavelski, James Sheppard and Chris Tierney raised more than $15,000 to support three non-profit organizations: Defending the Blue Line, the Katie Moore Foundation and the San Francisco Zoo. The top-15 donors and their guests were invited to attend the Buzzcut at Sharks Ice San Jose, while the top-6 donors received tickets to Burns’ suite for a 2014-15 Sharks home game.

SHARKS AND STRIKES PRESENTED BY SAP

Sharks players, coaches, broadcasters and alumni traded in sticks and pucks for bowling balls and pins at the Sharks and Strikes bowling fundraiser on November 24, 2014 at Bowlmor in San Jose. Guests of all ages enjoyed the family-friendly atmosphere while bowling with Sharks celebrities and submitting bids and tickets for unique silent auction and raffle items and experiences. All participants went home with a custom Sharks bowling pin to commemorate the occasion. The third annual event raised nearly $50,000.

SHARK FOR A DAY FANTASY CAMP

On February 7, 2015, 24 Sharks fans experienced a day-in-the-life of an NHL player by attending Shark for a Day Fantasy Camp at SAP Center. Participants skated alongside Sharks alumni Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Kyle McLaren and Jeff Friesen in a regulation game coached by Jamie Baker and Dave Maley. Campers also enjoyed a game footage tutorial from members of the Sharks coaching staff, private question-and-answer session with Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson, a behind-the-scenes tour of SAP Center and attended the Sharks vs. Carolina Hurricanes game that evening. The 2015 Shark for a Day Fantasy Camp raised nearly $32,000.

SAMPLING WITH THE SHARKS PRESENTED BY CITRIX

On March 5, 2015, the Sharks roster, coaches, broadcasters, alumni and nearly 300 Foundation supporters enjoyed an evening of the finest wines from Northern California during the Sampling with the Sharks wine tasting fundraiser at Club Auto Sport. The event featured live, premier and silent auctions, including a Napa Valley Experience with the Burns’ and a private wine pairing dinner with Marc-Édouard Vlasic. Sampling with the Sharks raised $120,000 with $12,000 benefiting the San Jose Rotary Club’s philanthropic project, Rotaplast International.

FITNESS FACEOFF PRESENTED BY KAISER PERMANENTE

The third annual Fitness Faceoff on Sunday, June 28, saw nearly 2,200 Foundation supporters complete a combined 15,000 miles. Participants had the option of running or walking a 5K or 10K or biking a 20-or 50-mile bike course, while youth participants ran the perimeter of SAP Center in the Kid’s Fun Run. Fitness Faceoff also included a Health Festival, which featured various activities and booths aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle. The 2015 Fitness Faceoff raised more than $32,000.

The Sharks are dedicated to supporting the San Jose community in various ways throughout the year. In

addition to grant giving, the Foundation was involved in a number of programs that helped achieve its

mission of enhancing the lives of underserved youth and their families in Santa Clara County from donating

street hockey equipment, building a playground and encouraging youth literacy.

The 2014-15 season saw the launch of Stick to Fitness powered by Kaiser Permanente. Stick to Fitness is a fun and active program dedicated to educating sixth grade students on the importance of healthy living, while encouraging them to be active during physical education classes and at home. In its inaugural year, the program taught lessons in health and fitness to nearly 1,800 underserved youth and provided 10 local schools with street hockey equipment for their sixth grade P.E. classes.

For each San Jose Sharks goal scored during the 2014-15 season, $1,000 was donated to local organizations dedicated to enhancing the lives of underserved youth and families in Santa Clara County. Thanks to the 2014-15 program partners: the Koret Foundation, Taube Philanthropies, Le Boulanger, along with the Sharks Foundation, $247,500 was donated to six beneficiaries including: Child Advocates of Silicon Valley, City Year San Jose, Dan Ashley’s Rock the CASA, Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen, Ronald McDonald House at Stanford and Via Services.

During the 2014-15 season, 39,000 students participated in Reading Is Cool presented by Comerica Bank. This free and unique literacy program focuses on public kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms in Santa Clara County and southern Alameda County and promoted the importance of reading while sharing the excitement and enjoyment of a good book. Through a multifaceted approach that includes exclusive experiences and incentives, students are encouraged to succeed as individual readers and as a classroom team.

On May 15, 2015 the Sharks Foundation partnered with KaBOOM!, the San Jose Parks Foundation and the Campbell Union School District to build a Sharks-themed playground at Sherman Oaks Elementary School. In six hours more than 200 volunteers from Sharks Sports & Entertainment, SAP, Kaiser Permanente, Orchard Supply Hardware and members of the community, assembled slides and rock walls, built benches and planters, painted tiles and moved nearly 44,000 square feet of mulch. Sharks defenseman Matt Irwin, alumni Owen Nolan and Evgeni Nabokov and mascot S.J. Sharkie also helped apply the finishing touches.

KaBOOM! PLAYGROUND BUILD

In December the Sharks Foundation hosted the annual Holiday Assist Party where Sharks players, coaches, management, members of the ownership group and front office staff partnered with Healthy Start Family Resource Center to serve as “Assisters” for families in need. During the event 40 families celebrated the season with arts and crafts, ice skating with S.J. Sharkie and a healthy meal. At the close of the night, each family was surprised to find a pile of wrapped gifts from their Assister to help fulfill their holiday wish lists.

During the year, the Sharks Foundation, along with San Jose Sharks players, broadcasters, alumni and S.J. Sharkie visited Kaiser Permanente’s Santa Clara Medical Center to help spread joy to hospital patients.

On June 24, 2015, Sharks defenseman Brent Burns accepted the NHL Foundation Player Award at the annual NHL Awards presentation in Las Vegas.

“It was always my dream to play in the NHL, but if that

didn’t work out, I always wanted to be in the special forces. Through

Defending the Blue Line and Folds of Honor, my wife and I have been

blessed to meet some amazing families and service members around the

U.S. and Canada. For this, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has

served our country in the past and right now.”

The Sharks Foundation provides charitable grants in the amount of $20,000-25,000 for organizations that

support youth and their families, with special emphasis on underserved populations and at-risk youth. In 2014-

15, the Sharks Foundation distributed $525,000 to 23 organizations that share the Foundation’s focus on

education, health & safety, and character development.

AAUW-San Jose Gifts for Teensaauwsanjose.org

AAUW - San Jose advances equality for all and focuses on education and promoting positive societal changes within the community. Gifts for Teens (GFT), an AAUW-SJ action project,

demonstrates support for low-income and homeless teenagers by distributing holiday gift bags full of useful and fun teen-

oriented items. GFT advocates for improving local at-risk teens’ lives.

AchieveKidsachievekids.org

AchieveKids schools provide individualized and multi-disciplinary programs that deliver special education, mental

health and family support services for students aged 5-22 who have complex and often severe developmental, emotional and

behavioral challenges. The Sharks Foundation grant will support AchieveKids’ Community Integration Program that provides hands-on training in daily living skills, such as taking public

transit, ordering meals at restaurants and buying groceries. The curriculum involves classroom instruction and weekly outings

to reinforce and practice new skills.

Have a Heart, Save a Life helps prepare underserved communities to perform CPR in the event of an emergency.

Using personal, all-in-one CPR Anytime kits developed by the American Heart Association, middle school students in the

Franklin-McKinley school district in San Jose learned CPR and were encouraged to go home and teach family and friends using

their kits. When more people in a community know CPR, more lives can be saved. Attendees of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual summer camp

played a game of power hockey with the help of the Sharks Foundation.

The Sharks Foundation grant funded 2,500 new school uniforms for disadvantaged elementary school children. 1,250 students received two new shirts and two pairs of pants, which enabled

them to be dressed to learn by increasing their self esteem.

Environmental Volunteers, Inc.evols.org

The Environmental Volunteers, Inc.’s Kids in Nature program brought the Environmental Volunteers into local schools to enrich students’ science education and ignite a lasting love

of nature. Through hands-on learning both inside and outside the classroom, the Kids in Nature program boosted students’ understanding of the natural sciences, while also connecting

kids to local natural spaces, often for the very first time.

The nutrition status of homeless children has profound effects on their health, development and ability to learn. Family

Supportive Housing (FSH) provides the families staying at their Shelter with healthy, fresh food—three meals and two snacks

a day, 365 days a year. Continued support from the Sharks Foundation allowed Family Supportive Housing to help address

the critical nutritional gap for the children and parents FSH serves who are experiencing homelessness.

The Sharks Foundation’s grant funded the Drop-In Center located on S. 2nd Street in San Jose. The Drop-In Center is a

safe place where homeless youth can begin to form bonds with caring adults and access resources for their overall well-being,

including knowledge and skills to live a healthy lifestyle. The primary goal of the program is to get homeless youth into safe

and stable housing.

Funding supported CreaTV’s youth media training program (MAP) for disadvantaged youth from San Jose and surrounding communities. MAP brought state of the art professional digital

video production equipment and trainers to K-12 school campuses in San Jose and surrounding communities. MAP then

provided youth access to its cable channels to air their final work and reach their own communities.

Downtown College Prepdcp.org

Downtown College Prep (DCP) prepares first-generation students for college - believing every student has the potential

to succeed. DCP’s newest middle school, DCP El Camino lacked the resources needed to provide an adequate reading

experience to their middle school students. This grant created six mini-libraries in DCP El Camino. In providing extensive and inclusive mini-libraries, DCP believes they can greatly prepare

their students for academic success and in the process, cultivate self-confidence.

A Sharks Foundation grant helped Downtown College Prep build six new mini-libraries at their newest middle school, Downtown College Prep El Camino.

Muscular Dystrophy Associationmda.org

The Muscular Dystrophy Association camp program is offered free of charge to local youth aged 6-17 living with muscle

diseases. Designed to meet the special needs of children with physical challenges, the camp has all of the activities one would

expect to find: horseback riding, swimming, soccer, a talent show, camp dance, camp fires, crazy hair day, arts and crafts

and more. Each activity is specially tailored to each individual’s ability.

My New Red Shoesmynewredshoes.org

My New Red Shoes eliminates a significant barrier to school engagement by providing homeless and impoverished children

with the basic necessities of new shoes and clothing to start the school year. In fiscal year 2015, My New Red Shoes served more than 7,000 Bay Area Children including more than 1,700 school-

aged children from Santa Clara County.

cost, JW House is able to relieve some of this financial pressure as well as provide emotional support.

Montalvo Arts Center’s Teaching Artist Residency Program brings teaching artists together with classroom teachers

to collaborate on multi-week curricula that use the arts to emphasize creativity and critical thinking across all academic

disciplines. The innovative and effective program helps teachers support student learning and build the skills at the heart of the new Common Core State Standards by modeling their use through arts practices. Sharks Foundation funding

helped the program serve 1,900 K-5 Santa Clara County students and brought the program to five Title I schools,

directly impacting 780 economically disadvantaged students in 26 classrooms.

Grail Family Services’ Yes We Can…Read! Children’s Initiative is focused on providing K-1st graders in Alum Rock Union School District with a strong foundation of literacy skills and thereby

improves their reading abilities and educational outcomes. The program includes two, 12-week sessions of structured, one-on-one literacy skills mentoring, and is complemented by a

six-week Parent/Teacher Workshop and multiple Family Literacy Nights.

The program provides experiential success-based training and behavioral coaching to equip 1,000 high-risk and disadvantaged

children and youth, preK-12 in the South Bay with tools and skills to: stay physically and emotionally safe, interact safely with the world around them, reduce the level of violence and

abuse they experience and increase their health and well-being. This program also enhances the ability of 150 parents, teachers,

sports and youth development, and family support program staff to incorporate this skill building into their family support structure, school, and organization’s standard practices on an

ongoing basis.

This grant helped purchase new, properly fitting school shoes, school supplies and nutritious food so that 1,300 very low-

income children have healthy food over the summer and back-to-school supplies for the school year. Funding from the grant,

along with discounts from Payless Shoes and other financial and in-kind donations, helped disadvantaged children be ready to go

back to school with adequate food, properly fitting shoes, and basic school supplies that they could not otherwise afford.

Funds from the Sharks Foundation supported their operations in Santa Clara County where Reading Partners serves 791

students from 15 schools. With the Sharks Foundation grant, Reading Partners recruited, trained and mentored 40-100

volunteer tutors at each school, who provided students with individualized instruction twice a week for 45 minutes.

Volunteer tutors are guided by a reading plan based on assessments of students’ strengths and areas of improvement.

Sacred Heart’s Youth Education Program helps at-risk, under-served Latino children become healthy, self-sufficient adults.

The program served 190 youth ages 3-14 and their families with preschool that promotes kindergarten readiness and early literacy skills, after-school homework club, summer academy to strengthen core academic skills, and parent education that

promotes active engagement in their child’s education.

In three years, ArtSpark (created and managed by Symphony Silicon Valley) has brought 68,500, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders

to professional-quality performances by major local arts providers, organized by grade sequence: theater in 3rd, music

in 4th, dance in 5th. Hundreds of schools (55% Title I) from 23 of 26 SC Country school districts have participated, many annually. Performances, universal busing and class materials

are all free; entire class levels attend from each school to equalize access.

The Tech Museum of Innovationthetech.org

The Engineering for Everyone program provides hands-on engineering kits (and associated training) for checkout in

public libraries, school libraries and after-school programs that serve low-income communities. The year’s kits had everything that students, teachers and entire families needed to practice

seismic engineering, including a shake table to simulate an earthquake. The kit included detailed bilingual instructions and

earthquake-themed books to support.

This grant supported free Youth Science Institute (YSI) science education programs for underserved, at-risk youth in Santa

Clara County. The funding covered 50 hands-on, inquiry-based science programs for 1,450 third-grade students from Title I

schools. Science Education Programs were delivered at one of YSI’s three, park-based locations including bus transportation

costs.

With the help of the Sharks Foundation, My New Red Shoes created handmade bags containing a pair of shoes that were sent to school-aged youth in Santa Clara County for the upcoming school year.

YWCA Silicon Valley, Domestic Violence Department Support Network Program

who received emergency shelter, basic needs (such as food, clothing, toiletries, etc.) and critical therapy services (individual therapy sessions and therapy based support groups) to address the physical, emotional, verbal and psychological trauma they

have witnessed or experienced as a result of domestic violence in the home.

COLLECTION DRIVESAt select home games each season, the Sharks Foundation hosts collection drives in partnership with different charitable organizations in need throughout Santa Clara County. In 2014-15, the Sharks Foundation hosted the following: Reading is Cool presented by Comerica Bank Book Drive, Second Harvest Food Bank Collection Drive, Toys for Tots Toy Drive, Save a Life Blood Drive, Sacred Heart Warmth Drive and the Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp Collection Drive. Each collection drive accepted valuable items, as well as monetary donations in exchange for raffle tickets for a chance to win Sharks prizes.

MYSTERY PUCKSThe Sharks Foundation held several Mystery Puck fundraisers at specific home games throughout the 2014-15 season. The limited edition pucks were signed by players, wrapped individually and sold on the concourse for $20. Themes: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. Net proceeds from Mystery Puck sales benefit the Sharks Foundation.

IN-GAME AND SPECIAL AUCTIONSAt every home game during the Sharks regular season, the Foundation hosts an in-game auction at the Sharks Foundation Booth located outside Section 118 on the Concourse Level. Items available for auction can range from autographed jerseys and framed photos to unique and exclusive Sharks experiences. Proceeds from all in-game auctions benefit the Sharks Foundation.

Several special auctions also take place throughout the season. Special auctions in 2014-15 included: Hockey Fights Cancer jerseys, Veterans Day jerseys, Holiday Wish List auction, Holiday jerseys, Valentine’s Day jerseys, Sharks Stick auction, St. Patrick’s Day jerseys, Game-Used jerseys and Sharks Favorite Things baskets.

BAY AREA ALL-STAR SCHOLARSHIP TEAM (BAASST)The Bay Area All-Star Scholarship Team program is a partnership established between the San Jose Sharks, Golden State Warriors, Oakland Athletics, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Giants, San Jose Earthquakes and San Francisco 49ers. Each participating team has contributed to the scholarship program in a collective effort to assist Bay Area high school students in achieving their goal of higher education. Each year, seven outstanding students residing within the Bay Area’s nine counties receive a $3,000 scholarship. The students are then honored at participating teams’ home games.

HIGH SCHOOL WRITERS’ DAY Each season the Sharks host their annual High School Writers’ Day - an event which gives aspiring high school students the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a professional journalist. The experience included: access to professional athletes, staff and team beat writers, a press room meal, a behind the scenes tour of SAP Center and a press box view of the game. At the conclusion of the event, the participants wrote a recap of their experience. This unique event is open each year to journalism students (juniors and seniors only) enrolled in a Santa Clara County high school. 

FINATICAL KIDS CLUBThe FINatical Kids Club is a club for Sharks fans 16-and-under, where members receive a unique fan experience. The Fan Development team leverages mascot S.J. Sharkie and Sharks players to engage with members at exclusive events in the community throughout the year. Membership also includes a FINatical Kids Club merchandise package and discounted ticket opportunities. During the 2014-15 season, the FINatical Kids Club sold out for its ninth consecutive year, with 1,700 members across the United States and Canada.

FUTURE GOALS POWERED BY EVERFIThe Sharks partnered with the NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association to launch Future Goals in 2014-15. Future Goals –Hockey Scholar is an online learning course that leverages the fast-paced, exciting game of hockey to teach students S.T.E.M.-based (science, technology, engineering, math) concepts. The course is for middle school students, grades 5-7, and is available to schools at no cost. During the season, one Bay area school participating in the program received a visit from Sharks players, mascot S.J. Sharkie and radio broadcast announcer Dan Rusanowsky.

MOBILE SHARK TANK & INFLATABLE The Mobile Shark Tank is a community-based instructional street hockey program that brings the hockey rink to you! The Sharks inflatable rink, along with street hockey gear, is brought to local elementary schools and community centers to give basic street hockey instruction and expose the sport of hockey to children. The Sharks inflatable slap shot booth is an 18x12 ft. interactive game designed to test accuracy, as fans shoot street hockey balls at five targets. The Sharks inflatable is brought out into the community at festivals, fairs, and other community functions, giving fans a chance to hold a hockey stick and test their skills, with the opportunity to win Sharks prizes for hitting the targets.

DONATIONS The San Jose Sharks provide in-kind donations in the form of autographed items to support local non-profits and put money back into local charities supporting the Bay Area. Last year, the San Jose Sharks donated 800+ pucks, 35+ signed sticks, and 60+ signed jerseys. Many of these donations are sent out to public schools, athletic programs, food banks, and local charities in Northern California. The San Jose Sharks look to make a splash in the community by helping generate funds and support good causes in the surrounding area.

KAISER PERMANENTE FUTURE SHARKSDuring the first intermission of select Sharks home games in 2014-15 local youth hockey teams had the chance to display their skills and talent in front of thousands of Sharks fans at SAP Center. Participating clubs dressed 12 players and were given the option to play either a two-minute hockey game or a 6-on-6 shootout during the intermission. Each team consisted of six skaters and one goalie. Clubs also received game tickets for the players and their guests courtesy of Kaiser Permanente and the Sharks.

The San Jose Sharks place an emphasis on exposing the game of hockey to youth throughout the Bay Area. By partnering with local public ice facilities, as well as

local youth hockey teams, the Sharks offer a number of programs that reach all levels of players. The Sharks Fan

Development Department engages local youth through programs which include the “Little Sharks – Learn to Play”

program presented by Hockey Giant, the Sharks & Parks Street Hockey Program powered by Kaiser Permanente,

the Mobile Shark Tank interactive street hockey experience, as well as the Kaiser Permanente Future

Sharks program.

SHARKS & PARKS POWERED BY KAISER PERMANENTE The Sharks & Parks street hockey program was created in 1991 and has reached tens of thousands of youth. The Sharks provide street hockey equipment and instructional material, such as administrator manuals for coaches and playbooks for kids, all free of charge. The Sharks & Parks season typically kick-offs with the Sharks & Parks tournament in the fall, coinciding with the beginning of the Sharks season and culminates in the spring.

Little Sharks presented by Hockey Giant is a “Learn to Play” ice hockey program for kids ages 4-8 with no prior organized hockey experience. Registration included four American Development Model style-instructed

lessons and head-to-toe equipment that they get to keep after completing the program. The purpose of the program is to make ice hockey an accessible sport to young kids. Little Sharks reached a total of 200 kids in 2014-15.
