Dear Community Partners:

• August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month • The First Week of August is World Breastfeeding Week

The Kern County Breastfeeding Coalition, made up of health organizations and community members committed to promoting breastfeeding and its benefits, will conduct a series of activities around National Breastfeeding Awareness Month (August) and World Breastfeeding Week (August 1 – 7), whose theme this year is “Breastfeeding and Work: Let’s Make it Work.” When & Where:

• Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM:

Annual Breastfeeding Resource Fair at Valley Plaza Mall (corner of Ming Ave. and Wible Road in Bakersfield). This event, located in front of JC Penney’s, is open to the public, and coalition members will be providing valuable breastfeeding resources to increase awareness on how to make breastfeeding “work” in the workplace.

• Sunday, August 2, at 2 p.m.: The Central Valley Lactation Association will host a FREE screening of “The Milky Way Movie”, an exposé documentary on breastfeeding in the U.S, at Homewood Suites, 1505 Mill Rock Way, Bakersfield. Individuals can register at http://bit.ly/1GO32tW.

• Tuesday, August 4:

The Kern County Breastfeeding Coalition will raise awareness about National Breastfeeding Awareness Month at the Kern County Board of Supervisors Meeting (AM or PM meeting time is still TBD).

11

• Tuesday, August 4 & Thursday, August 6, from 11: 30 AM to 1:30 PM

: Kern Medical Center (1700 Mt Vernon Ave, in Bakersfield) will hold its annual World Breastfeeding Week bake sale in the hospital cafeteria. Proceeds will benefit the Lactation Team.

• Thursday, August 6 & August 20: San Joaquin Community Hospital (2615 Chester Ave., in Bakersfield) will hold FREE breastfeeding classes. Space is limited. Reserve a seat at https://www.adventisthealth.org/sjch/event/breast-feeding-basics.

• Throughout the Month of August

- The Kern County Breastfeeding Coalition will visit local Obstetricians’ offices to distribute breastfeeding posters/resources that will increase access to prenatal breastfeeding education.

:

- Community Action Partnership of Kern’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Program will feature a breastfeeding awareness display in the Beale Memorial Library (on the corner of Truxtun and P Streets, in Downtown Bakersfield).

- Ridgecrest Regional Hospital (1081 N. China Lake Blvd., Ridgecrest) will be handing out gift bags full of fun items to their breastfeeding patients (and their families) the entire month.

Why: To raise awareness about the health impact of breastfeeding, and to highlight local resources available. Breastfeeding has been identified as an important contributor to overall health. In addition, it has been linked to a reduction in the risk of obesity; cardiovascular disease; diabetes; asthma; childhood and adult cancers; childhood infections; and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Studies also show an increase in intelligence scores in children who are exclusively breastfed. How: For more information and interview/story opportunities, please contact: Sara Steelman, MPH, CLEC Regional Breastfeeding Liaison – CAPK WIC Co-Chair - Kern County Breastfeeding Coalition 661-327-3074 [email protected]

• The hunger needs in Kern are so great, that the CAPK Food Bank’s distributed food volume between 2012 and 2014 doubled from 6.1 million to 12.2 million lbs.

• The largest number of calls to 2-1-1 Kern County, our community linkage helpline, are from persons seeking referrals for food and meal assistance.

• Our state’s ongoing drought continues to create conditions of hunger for many Kern families through breadwinners’ reduced work hours or job loss.

Help us reduce food insecurity in Kern County.
