From the Principal

Here we are at the end of another successful term! Please note the Term 4 calendar above to ensure that you don’t miss anything exciting! Bakers Delight Fundraiser On Saturday 12 October Bakers Delight will be donating 100% of their profits to four local public schools. We are lucky enough to be one of the four! Please support BPS by shopping at Bakers Delight on Saturday 12 October! More details in the flyer later on in the newsletter. Summer Uniform Please remember that summer uniform needs to be worn from Day 1 of Term 4. Thank you for upholding the high expectations that we have of our students to wear the correct uniform at all times. Please ensure that all belongings are labelled. Preschool Visits This term our Year 4 and 5 students have been visiting surrounding preschools as part of our Community Partnerships Preschool Connections program. They have had two visits to their allocated preschool and enjoyed playing with the children and reading them stories. The preschools all commented on how well the students represented the school. P&C Trivia Night The P&C is holding its second Trivia Night on Saturday 26 October. The theme is Living Legends and the teachers are looking for a challenge so we hope to see you ail there! Students return to school after the holidays on Monday 14 October as we don’t have a Staff Development Day at the beginning of Term 4. We hope that you all have a lovely holiday…see you in Term 4!

Kindergarten

What a blast we have had in term 3. This term we have focused on Fairy Tales. We have explored the Fairy Tales of 3 Little Pigs, Jack and the Bean Stalk, Goldilocks and the three bears and many more. Through our learning we have discovered what makes up a Fairy Tale, looking at the setting which is where the story is set and the characters which is who is in the story. During our learning of Goldilocks and the three bears we made Porridge just like what was in the story. This term in Math we looked at money, we explored and made our own catalogues and looked at different ways to make different amounts of money such as $5 and $10 and what we could buy with them. We were also lucky enough to be visited by Mrs McCredie. During our lessons with Mrs McCredie we were looking at 3D Objects. We have had the opportunity to discuss in our groups and create a model using materials that we brought in from home, we created all sorts of different models that looked likes house, castles, cruise ships and many more. We have looked at questioning asking questions such as, “How and might we do it next time?”

This term in Year 1, we have been learning how to write poetry using figurative language. We have discovered how figurative language types such as alliteration, personification, simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, repetition and rhyming couplets can enhance our poetry and imaginative writing. Each class has read and studied famous Australian poets and discussed how their writing make us feel and how we can be influenced by them to create our own poetry.

Alongside our figurative language, we have learnt to use our 5 senses to remind us of how we feel towards colours, pictures and sounds to develop our knowledge and use of adjectives. These senses have enhanced the way we describe settings, characters and plot to develop an enriching imaginative writing piece. The work that has been produced has been outstanding and displays how hard Year 1 has been working this term! See you in the playground! Ms Lohr, Mr Murray and Mrs Richardson.

It’s hard to believe that we are at the end of Term 3! We have certainly been busy investigating our world. Here are photos showing some of our experiences with Augmented Reality and Visual Reality activities. We were exploring the Great Barrier Reef. This is what we found in our room!! As part of our Science unit on Water we have participated in experiments. Here we discovered how strong air pressure can be. We didn’t think it was possible for a piece of paper to stop water from falling out of an upside down glass! Glad we did it over a bucket though!! Some of us explored floating and sinking and investigated which materials could hold the most counters. In Maths, we have been trying to get quicker with addition and subtraction and we built towers using Base 10 blocks. Then we had to add up the value of our tower. It was very exciting! We are looking forward to our holiday and the start of our last term in Year 2!

On Wednesday the 11TH September year 3,4 and 5 visited Taronga Zoo to consolidate our knowledge from our science units: Fur, Feathers and Leaves (year 3) and Animal Adaptations (years 4 and 5). Luckily for us, it was a beautiful day filled with lots of laughter and fun. We began the day by piling onto buses and were even complimented on how sensible the Brookvale students behaved! Each class had time to explore the many animals the Zoo has to offer and we all met up again for the 11am Seal show. While we ate our recess, Bondi, Cisco and Murphy showed off for us and our very own Courtney even got help train Cisco! After the sensational seal show, Classes had the opportunity to continue to explore the Zoo, although most classes headed straight for the Tiger trek. At 12.30 we were all excitedly anticipating the animals we would see at the Education Centre. After a talk about animal adaptions, we got to meet some fantastic friends. We got to meet and greet Possums, Turtles, Snakes and even baby Crocodiles! Although we were getting tired, we still had a few animals we wanted to see, so after a quick lunch break we continued on our expeditions. Some of the fan favourites included the Elephants, the Snakes and the Australian Animal enclosure. Brookvale had an amazing day and all the teachers and parents who attended were so proud of the way the students displayed school pride. We can’t wait to go back!

We have had a very successful term with our dance! Our K-2 and 3-6 Show Troupes went and represented Brookvale in two eisteddfods. Both teams did an incredible job and came away with two second places, a third place and highly commended. Our school also received a special award and prize for our unique and exciting dances. Congratulations Brookvale!

Stage 3 In Week 7, Stage 3 travelled to CARES at St. Ives for a day of bike safety. They learnt about the standards for bike helmets, road rules for bikes, they completed an obstacle course and spent an hour riding around purpose-built roads ensuring they followed road rules. The roads even had a roundabout and a full set of traffic lights. They were given a bike licence and points were deducted for any rules broken. “CARES was a fun and educational experience. We learnt the importance of wearing a helmet and obeying the laws”. Ali. “My favourite part was getting to go on the main road and trying not to lose points”. Lexus. “CARES was an unforgettable fun experience. We learnt lots and had so much fun”. Zahia. Mr Gadd and Mrs Roberts.

Zone Athletics Carnival

Zone Athletics took place over two days in Week 6. The first day was high jump, long jump, shot put and the 1500 metres, and the second was all the track events. We all performed well but we had two students who will be going to regionals. Coen in Year 5 managed a remarkable first place in 11yrs shot put with his throw of 9.52m. The second student was Cassia in Year 2 who placed third in the 100 metre finals. Good luck Coen and Cassia! Apart from our champions, Brookvale had a fun two days of cheering, competing and winning. We met new friends and for a brief few moments, we were coming first for the relays! Despite the rain and the hot weather, Brookvale managed to emerge victorious. Thank you parents for coming and supporting us out at our big day. Thank you Mr. Gray for taking us to zone and organizing our athletics carnival here at Brookvale. Ambrin & Ali

Once again, the Brookvale Public School community has been extremely supportive of another worthy charity. The Great Book Swap raises funds for the

Indigenous Literacy Foundation. During the 3 days this event ran, over 400 books were swapped, raising nearly $340! A huge thankyou must be given to the parents and students who donated and bought books. Another thank you must be given to the delightful Year 4 students who manned the stalls during recess and lunch. They are Inari, Molly, Saraya, Wendy, Poppy, Rosie, Arianna, Neive, Iris and Aria. This money will go a long way towards encouraging a love of books and reading in Indigenous

communities.
