Objectives• Explain the high level challenges of power systems and

related use cases• Explain and demonstrate where CIM can be applied to help

resolving issues that power system engineers are facing• Bring up to date information on CIM which is enabling data

exchange and interoperability in the industry in a complex and challenging environment

• Increase awareness and cooperation by power system engineers to address business needs of the community

• Help different IEEE P&E Society committees to identify topics for discussions between committees and between IEEE and IEC.

Guiding principles when preparing the edition

• Explain CIM from the viewpoint of power system engineers

• Focus on main areas and provide details for a few of them

• Involve experts from different domains – utilities, vendors, academia, etc.

• Involve experts from different continents• No overlap of authors between articles

The Six Articles • Power systems - from challenges and requirements

to interoperable solutions• The CIM and Smart Meters: Intelligence Across the

Enterprise• Today’s grid relies on accurate network models• Making Distribution Automation Work: The Need for

Smart Data• The CIM – a Look Under The Hood• Enabling the Integrated Grid – Leveraging Data to

Integrate Distributed Resources and Customers

Article 4: Making Distribution Automation Work: The Need for Smart Data

• How the CIM standards enable the acquisition and integration of data from a variety of sources and time frames

• The need to increase awareness at the corporate level that new data governance policies

• Smart Grid vision: a key ingredient of which is to think big but start small.
