Congratulations to all the artists who entered. Our standard was superb! What unusual weather it was and we could never have predicted that this year it would be like that. On the Thursday it was unbearably hot which brought a lot of the public inside and we had many, many visitors looking at and buying artworks. Then on Friday it was so wet that again it brought the public inside and again they purchased paintings. The standard of the entire show was very high and it was fabulous to walk around and look at the displays of the other art societies including some of the fabulous sculpture work. A big thank you to John Sutherland who donated the use of his van to deliver paintings to the show. It was greatly appreciated.

It was a successful and entertaining evening at the DVAS Rooms on Friday evening 8th April. About 25 people watched Nerina with a bubbly personality demonstrate her artistic skills. Nerina who uses encaustic wax and gold leafing in her work certainly has some very good techniques and everybody would have gained something useful from the evening. Her artwork is very different from the run of the mill and extremely decorative. Thanks Nerina for coming and also thanks to all the people who came along and showed support for our DVAS Demonstration Evenings: It was a really good turn-out.

NERINA’S DEMO: REPORT BY DIANE GARDNER What a fabulous well attended demo’ with Nerina who is such a creative and lovely lady and is a member of the Nillumbik artist’s Residence Program. Nerina looked at indigenous people all over the world and really got stuck on Japan. She uses gold and silver tin foil paper and leather from Bali, also Japanese Washi paper, cut up kimonos, wallpaper and glitter. Nerina doesn’t plan paintings, she just starts with a square and it grows from there or maybe I’ve had a meditation and a painting comes to me. She works on a few paintings at a time which allows them to dry in between Every painting starts with a layer of tissue paper then layers of acrylic paint or whatever is water based. She also uses bitumen which she buys from the hardware shop and encaustic wax (from the Greek word meaning to heat or burn in), a mixture of Damar varnish and beeswax. This adds a uniform layer and over that she burnishes with a hair dryer then polishes it with a rag. She started with tissue paper and said little rips and tears in it are wonderful. She then painted on PVA glue brushing it quite hard even allowing the tissue to tear in places. “As she said there are no rules”. She then used masking tape which she put on her clothes first to remove some of the stickiness, then put it on her painting where she wanted to divide off areas. She said cheap Chinese tape is great because it isn’t as sticky. She glued on some Kiko Hanibashi paper (one of her favourites) which looks like a beehive. She then painted on some size to add some gold leaf. It needs to be left for a while as the longer you leave it the stickier it gets, then after some time added the gold leaf. Nerina used Jo Sonja’s crackle medium over the green acrylic paint she already had painted on the canvas then started washing it off in places. After using the golf leaf tin foil from Bali she always keeps the plastic backing paper (which has an interesting pattern on it) then uses this to mask off areas where she doesn’t want paint to cover what she has already done with her silk screen printing process. She arranged it in a way so that it represented a river. She put Japanese paint on one area then left another area plain “so the eye can rest” she said. She then silk screened over the top. Sometimes she uses the plastic to also stick onto the painting giving another layer and visual effect.

Here is her process of the painting she demonstrated:

Step 1 1. Lay down tissue paper, PVA glue over it. 2. Layer on paints – portraying aged effect.

Step 2 1. Apply masking tape to create a foil edge, and cutting part of it into a circle to create a moon. 2. Glue on strips of Japanese paper.

Step 3 1. Cover areas with plastic ready for screen

printing. 2. Silk screen print area.

Step 4 1. Apply more silver leaf and foil in a diagonal

arrangement.

Step 5 1. Apply waves of mist with Japanese paper.

Step 6 1. Apply details and then a fine spray to give the

final effect. 2. Lastly a layer if encaustic wax to protect the

piece.

One important thing Nerina said was that the finished piece must never be hung where it gets sun on it or heat as the wax will eventually melt. When asked what rules do you follow she said I divide my piece into 3’s making sure there are areas of space to rest and it always must have a sense o f mist and mystery.
