For the current President of the University, it was a time to look ahead. For the 1,044 graduates of the class of 2004, it was the time they had looked forward to. The University’s one hundred and fourth commencement was filled with reflections and celebrations, words of thanks, observations and an invitation. During the Commencement Ceremony, held May 30 at Wachovia Arena, the University conferred 843 bachelor’s degrees, 195 master’s degrees and six asso- ciate’s degrees. Rev. Joseph M. McShane, S.J., President of Fordham University and former President of The University of Scranton, gave the principal address. In his remarks to the graduates, Fr. McShane reflected on his years at the University, a timeline that paralleled that of the Royal Class of 2004 from their freshman to senior years. “You are the reason for the sense of joy and honor that I feel at this moment,” said Fr. McShane. “For you see, the fact that I have just become a member of your class makes my heart sing. I am more grateful than I could ever say to be counted among your number.” In recalling the events of September 11, 2001, Fr. McShane commended the stu- dents, saying, “…you showed yourselves to be men and women of mature wis- dom, deep compassion and strong and steady faith.” In addition to delivering the keynote address, Fr. McShane received an hon- orary degree from the University, as did Patrick A. Toole, James W. Dyer ’66, Jane E. Oppenheim, Colleen Kelly and William H .Finn ’67, posthumously. University President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., also addressed the graduates and their families and friends. He offered words of thanks to the honorary degree recipients “who enrich our celebration,” to faculty who “change the lives of students” to parents and families of gradu- ates and to the gradu- ates themselves “for the mark that you have made on your alma mater.” Fr. Pilarz also offered what he referred to as an observation, noting that “there is some- thing rare and pre- cious about this place (the University).” He concluded his remarks by inviting the part- ing students to “Take Scranton with you” and to “come home to Scranton.” The University awarded 1,044 bachelor’s, master’s and associate’s degrees during its 104th Commencement. “Always view the world and your place in it from the Scranton perspective; let the magis permeate your life and, please, never compromise your commitment to the service of others and the greater glory of God.” Rev. Joseph M. McShane, S.J. President of Fordham University and former President of The University of Scranton Two University of Scranton professors were recently named Fulbright Fellows – Satya P. Chattopadhyay, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Management/Marketing, for the Ukraine, and Roy P. Domenico, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History, for Italy. A previous Fulbright recipient, Dr. Chattopadhyay will study the rapidly inte- grating European market and establish con- tacts between the University’s Kania School of Management and the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy, which was estab- lished in 1615. His Fulbright Fellowship in 1999 allowed him to lecture and conduct research in the Kyrgyz Republic. Dr. Domenico will research Italian-Catholic political culture during the Cold War. “I feel honored to able to represent the spirit of Senator Fulbright’s goals for the program,” says Dr. Chattopadhyay. “I am excited to be at the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy for my second Fulbright assignment. The University’s Center for Social Action and Service Initiatives has planned and coordinated four international service trips this summer. Students, accompanied by staff and/or faculty members as chaper- ones, are traveling to Kenya, Mexico and Ecuador to help those less fortunate. Four students, Anthony Giancatarino, Kate Redmond, Steve Clark and Ann Marissa Ambacher, are visiting Kenya for three weeks in June. Tata Mbugua, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Education, will accom- pany the students on this first international service trip to her native country. While in Kenya, the group will be hosted by Hekima College – Jesuit School of Theology, Catholic University of East Africa, Nairobi. The trips include visits to social development projects of both the host Jesuit province and other community-based entities including an orphanage, hospice and community out- reach program for HIV-positive orphans, Jesuit Refugee Services, and Catholic Relief Services. The trip participants will also visit and meet with faculty and students at Kenyatta University, Nairobi University, and Catholic University of Eastern Africa. (continued on pg. 2)

University, it was a time to look back.For the current President of the

University, it was a time to look ahead. For the 1,044 graduates of the class of

2004, it was the time they had lookedforward to.

The University’s one hundred andfourth commencement was filled withreflections and celebrations, words ofthanks, observations and an invitation.

During the Commencement Ceremony,held May 30 at Wachovia Arena, theUniversity conferred 843 bachelor’sdegrees, 195 master’s degrees and six asso-ciate’s degrees.

A previous Fulbright recipient, Dr.Chattopadhyay will study the rapidly inte-grating Eu ropean market and establish con-tacts between the Un i ve r s i t y’s Kania Schoolof Management and the National Un i ve r s i t yof Kyiv Mohyla Ac a d e m y, which was estab-lished in 1615. His Fulbright Fe l l owship in1999 allowed him to lecture and conductre s e a rch in the Kyrgyz Re p u b l i c .

2004-2005 McGowan Scholar Named

Ro b e rt G. D’Ambrosio, Staten Island, N.Y., has been awarded a full-tuitionscholarship for his senior year at The Un i versity of Scranton through theWilliam G. Dr. Chattopadhyay joined theUn i ve r s i t y’s faculty in 1990 as an AssistantProfessor of Ma rk e t i n g / In t e r n a t i o n a lMa rketing. He was promoted to AssociateProfessor of Ma n a g e m e n t / Ma rketing in1997. Dr. Chattopadhyay has been a re g u-lar visitor to the Kyrgyz Republic, aCentral Asian state located north ofAfghanistan since 1993 and provides agraduate seminar in quality managementtechniques eve ry year at the Academy ofManagement in that country. In 2001, hewas selected as one of a handful of facultymembers from 26 Jesuit universities toteach a summer MBA program at Pe k i n gUn i ve r s i t y, Beijing, China. He has alsoestablished an informal faculty exc h a n g ep rogram with the School of Business of theRemnin Un i versity of Beijing, China.

Dr. Domenico has been a member of theu n i ve r s i t y’s faculty since 1997, when hetaught as an Assistant Pro f e s s o r. In 1999,he was promoted to Associate Pro f e s s o r.His major field of study is 19th and 20thc e n t u ry Eu rope, with emphasis on It a l yand Catholic nations. He is currently pub-lishing an article on his Fulbright topic inthe journal Diplomatic Hi s t o ry. He plansto publish is re s e a rch findings in what willbecome his fifth book.

C o n g ress established the Fulbright pro-gram in 1946 “to increase mutual under-standing between the people of the Un i t e dStates and people of other countries.” It isnamed after the late J. William Fu l b r i g h t ,the U.S. Senator who sponsored the pro-gram. Fulbright Fe l l owships are award e dt h rough a competitive application process.

Two trips to Mexico are planned withsix students each, for approximately 31/2 weeks. While in Mexico, studentswill work with the Salesian order ofpriests in a home for boys from troubledfamilies located in Mexico City. Studentson the first trip (June 3-29) includeTheresa DeLaurentis, Will Dennis, AnnFlynn, Dan Nelson, Eileen Webster andSarah Werther. They will be accompaniedby chaperones Jen Valtos ’02, AssistantDirector of Residence Life, and RebekahFerguson ‘01, Admissions Counselor.

The second trip leaves the United St a t e son June 29. Pa rticipants include DrewDavis, Maria Hu n d e r s m a rck, Mike Je n k i n s ,Scott Leuchten, Ana Mojtahedi and Ji l lSo m m e rville. Chaperones are Ad r i e n n eHamson ’01, Admissions Counselor, andAnn Scarp ’03, Annual Fund Of f i c e r.

Two alumni chaperones will remain inMexico to work with both groups: Angelo(AJ) Rizzo ’03, and Patricia Do u g h e rty ’00.

Nine students and one chaperone willvisit Ecuador for 10 days beginning Ju n e28. These students will be working inschools and at Ha n s e n’s Hospital for leperswith an organization called Rosto deCristo (Face of Christ). Ro s t ro de Cristo islocated in Duran, Ec u a d o r, and the pro-gram is hosted by a school named Nu e voMu n d o. The experience allows students ano p p o rtunity to work with the poor in sev-eral locations, including schools and hos-pitals. Students include Katie Barnes, Ni c kC o s t a n zo, Lauren Fontain, Jill Gi re s i ,Sarah Ha yes, Dan Kiers, Kelly Mc Gu i re ,C h e ryl Mrazik and Christina Smith. Kathleen K. Montgomery, D.Ed.,Associate Professor of Education, hasbeen selected Teacher of the Year by theUniversity ’s graduating class of 2004.The award was presented during ClassNight, May 29.

The Teacher of the Year Award, insti-tuted in 1996 by the academic supportcommittee of the University’s FacultySenate, honors a faculty member whomaintains high standards of academicexcellence and fairness and who, throughenthusiasm and dedication, inspiresinterest in a given field of education. Dr.Montgomery was chosen by secret ballotby the University’s senior class.

“The teaching and learning process is ac o l l a b o r a t i ve journey and one I am hon-o red to have taken with these graduates

who have taught me as much as I havetaught them,” says Dr. Mo n t g o m e ry. “I amdeeply moved by this award and am thank-ful to have students like the ones at T h eUn i versity of Scranton who are bright, ser-vice-oriented and who are already pro a c t i vecontributors to our world.”

The Teacher of the Year Award is oneof three teaching awards presented annu-ally by The University of Scranton. Theother two are the Edward Gannon, S.J.,Award for Excellence in Teaching, estab-lished by Alpha Sigma Nu, the NationalHonor Society for students in Jesuit col -leges and universities, and the Professorof the Year Award, sponsored by theCouncil for Advancement and Support ofEducation (CASE).

Dr. Montgomery joined The Universityof Scranton in 1998 as an AssistantProfessor of Education. She was namedAssociate Professor of Education in 2001.

Prior to joining the University, Dr.Montgomery was Assistant Professor ofEducation at Elmira College, Elmira,N.Y., and Assistant Professor/Supervisorof student teachers at Pennsylvania StateUniversity, University Park.

Dr. Mo n t g o m e ry was co-recipient of aPe n n s y l vania Higher Ed u c a t i o nTechnology Grant for performance assess-ment of students through technology, andc o - recipient of a cooperative endow m e n tgrant for The Un i versity of Scranton andMa rywood Un i versity Speaker Series. Dr.Mo n t g o m e ry has written two books, themost recent, co-authored with Dr. Da v i dWi l e y, on creating electronic port f o l i o s .

Dominick A.Cruciani Jr., M.D.,’54, C l a rks Su m m i t ,re c e i ved the award inMedicine. Dr.Cruciani served as ani n f a n t ry soldier in theKo rean War and as amedical officer duringthe Vietnam Wa r. Heearned his medicald e g ree fro m

Ge o r g e t own Medical School in 1958, andopened a private practice in ophthalmol-ogy in Scranton and the Pittston area. Dr.Cruciani has been ve ry active in local, stateand national medical societies. He is ayearly participant in fund-raising for theUn i versity campaigns, and served as chair-man of the annual alumni drive in 1976.He is a former member of the board oft rustees of The Un i versity of Scranton.

Ma rk E. Chopko,Esq., ’74, o fAlexandria, Va . ,re c e i ved the award inReligion andSp i r i t u a l i t y. He serve sas General Counsel tothe United St a t e sC o n f e rence of CatholicBishops, Wa s h i n g t o n ,D.C. As such, he is the

chief legal officer and supervises a corpo-rate legal staff of six. Mr. Chopko earnedhis juris doctorate from Cornell LawSchool. He has served as Assistant Ge n e r a lCounsel to the U.S. Catholic Confere n c e ,Inc., the National Conference of CatholicBishops; as senior attorney and attorney ofthe U.S. Nuclear Re g u l a t o ry Commission;and as trial counsel for the Cornell LegalAid Clinic. As an educator, hehas worked as a classroom teacher, coach,high school principal and Superintendentof Schools in the Wayne HighlandsSchool District. He has served on manyboards and committees, including theVisiting Middle States AssociationEvaluation Committee, the WayneMemorial Hospital Authority Board, andthe Wayne Bank Board of Directors. Hewas appointed by former PennsylvaniaGov. Tom Ridge to ser ve on the BaseRetention and Closure Committee-PAC.

William J. Corcoran, Esq. ’64,received the Law award. A resident ofWashington, D.C., he earned a juris doc-tor degree from Georgetown Universityin 1967. He served in the U.S. NavyJudge Advocate General’s Corps from1968 to 1971, and presently serves asSenior Counsel in the Public IntegritySection of the Criminal Division. In1972, he joined the U.S. Department ofJustice as a trial attorney. He served as a

Mr. DeSanto first joined the Universityin 1979 as Manager of Systems and

T. program – the first doctoral-leve lp rogram to be offered by the Un i ve r s i t y.

As the first step in phasing in the newD . P. T. program, the De p a rtment of Ph y s i c a lTherapy will launch an entirely We b - b a s e dtransition Doctor of Physical T h e r a p y( t D P T) degree program designed specificallyfor practicing clinicians beginning this fall.The tDPT degree enables licensed physicaltherapists to bridge the gap between theirp rofessional master’s degree in physical ther-apy education and the current entry - l e ve lclinical doctorate (DPT) education.

The tDPT degree requires 16 creditsbeyond an entry-level master’s degree inphysical therapy. The program consists offour Web-based courses (4 credits each)in the areas of evidence-based practice,pharmacology, pathology and diagnosis.All courses are presented entirely onlinewith optional on-campus discussion/review sessions offered one or two timeseach semester. Each course also includes aclinical case-based research component.

Applicants must possess a valid physicaltherapy license and have at least one yearof clinical experience as a physical thera-pist. Applicants with an entry-level bac-

The Making A Di f f e rence award isg i ven during Nurse Week to honor anurse who has experience in caring forpatients and has demonstrated clinical

e xcellence. It is for a nurse who has ded-icated him or herself to clinical practiceand truly has touched many lives.

The University’s Graduate Sch o o lEmployment Rate Highest Since 1999

The results of a Un i versity of Scrantonpost-graduation survey of graduate studentsf rom the class of 2003 re veal that 99 perc e n ta re either employed or pursuing additionaleducation within six months of graduation.

The survey is based on re s p o n s e sre c e i ved by 54 percent (116) of the 215students who earned graduate degre e sf rom The Un i versity of Scranton in 2003.

The average (mean) salary re p o rted is$47,747, based on the 86 graduates thatp rovided salary information. Most salariesre p o rted are in the range of $50,000 to$ 5 4 , 0 0 0 .

Ninety-four percent of respondents areemployed full-time, three percent areemployed part-time and two percent arepursuing additional education. Only onepercent reported being unemployed,which is the lowest level reported sincethe university’s class of 1999.

“ Sixty-two percent of the re s p o n d e n t sre p o rted that they have been at their cur-rent position for less than one ye a r, indi-cating that their graduate degree may

h a ve led to a new job for the graduates,”said Paul Perhach, Di rector of Care e rSe rvices at the Un i ve r s i t y.

Salaries vary by degree programs as wellas geographic location. The highest aver-age salary reported is $83,166 for gradu-ates with master’s degrees in nursing, fol-lowed by graduates with master’s degreesin health administration at $55,348.Graduates receiving their MBA degreeswith a concentration in accountingreport the third highest average salary of$55,000. The lowest average salariesreported are $33,333 for graduates withmaster’s degrees in secondary educationand $33,620 for graduates with master’sdegrees in school counseling.

The highest average salary reported bystate is $54,142 in New York. The aver-age salary reported for Pennsylvania was$48,053, which is the second highest.

Ninety percent of the graduatesemployed full-time are working inPennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.Fifty-six percent work in Pennsylvania.

Six student-athletes received the topawards at the 13th annual Senior Student-Athlete Banquet on May 14 at the EagenAuditorium in the Gunster MemorialStudent Center on campus.

Kyle Eaton (Old Bridge, N.J./MilfordAcademy-Conn.) and Kate Pierangeli(Springfield/Springfield) received the FrankO’Hara awards, which are presented annu-ally to the top male and female athletes ofthe senior class. The award is named inhonor of Frank O’Hara, a 1925 graduate ofthe University who had a distinguishedcareer in a variety of roles at the Universityfor more than 50 years.

Receiving the Father Fitzpatrick Awardwas Katie Szczepanski (Elizabethtown/Lancaster Catholic). Named in honor of thelate Reverend John J. Fitzpatrick, S.J., long-time friend and counselor of Royal student-athletes, this award is bestowed upon thestudent-athlete who has demonstrated out-standing leadership and who has givenextraordinary service and contributions tothe University of Scranton community andsociety in general.

The award is namedin honor of Ron Wi l l e n s k y, a native ofScranton and a 1963 graduate of theUn i versity who was a lifelong fan of theRoyals and the Lady Roy a l s .

Eaton, a four-year member of the icehockey team, concluded his career as the IceRoyals’ all-time leader in goals (64), assists(101) and total points (165). He was a sec-ond-team all-Eastern Collegiate HockeyAssociation (ECHA) selection in 2003 andhonorable mention in 2002 and 2004. Inaddition to leading the team in scoring inthree of his four seasons, he was instrumen-tal in leading Scranton to fourth-place fin-ishes in the ECHA in 2003 and 2004.

Pierangeli excelled in women’s basketballand women’s lacrosse. As a four-year start e rin basketball, she was the recipient ofn u m e rous accolades including honorable

mention all-American by DIII News (2004)and by Ko d a k / Wo m e n’s Basketball CoachesAssociation (2003, 2004). She was also afirst (2003) and second-team (2004) all-Mi d - Atlantic region selection byD3hoops.com, second-team all-EasternCollege Athletic Conference (ECAC )Southern Division (2003, 2004) and first-team all-Freedom Conference (2002, 2003,2004). She started 95 of 111 career gamesand finished 10th in scoring (1,292) and4th in assists (427) and steals (263) inScranton history. She started 42 of 43games in her career and is the Roy a l s’ all-timeleader in caused turnovers (116), second indraw controls (113) and third in total points(162), goals (104) and assists (58). Szczepanski, a four-year letter-winner infield hockey, was honored for her numerouson and off-campus activities. In addition toearning first-team all-Freedom Conference

Barlow maintained a 3.76 cumulativegrade point average in marketing and phi-losophy as a four-year member of the men’scross-country team. A three-time memberof the Middle Atlantic ConferenceAcademic Honor Roll for fall sports and a2003 Verizon District II all-Academic sec-ond-team selection, he competed in fourMAC and NCAA Mideast regional cham-pionships. He was a two-time team captain(2002, 2003).

butions as a retreat leader for campus min-istry and as a volunteer with an interna-tional service project in Ecuador last sum-mer. As a four-year letter-winner on thewomen’s basketball team, she appeared in90 career games and finished seventh in 3-point field goals made (71) and ninth in 3-point field goal percentage (.306) in LadyRoyals’ history. Three University of Scranton spring sportstudent-athletes were named to two VerizonDistrict II all-Academic teams.

In order to qualify, a student-athlete mustbe a sophomore, have a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.2-or-higher and be a keystarter or significant reserve. The teams arevoted upon by members of the CollegeSports Information Directors’ of America(CoSIDA). District II comprises the statesof Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey,Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the Districtof Columbia.

Mi l l e r, who has been accepted into the Collegeof Ve t e r i n a ry Medicine at the Un i versity ofPe n n s y l vania, is a two-time all-Fre e d o mC o n f e rence second-team selection (2001, 2004).This past season, she started 22 games and hit.387, with 24 hits, including six doubles, and 12r b i’s. She started 86 of 89 games during her four-year career and finished fifth all-time in Scrantonh i s t o ry in hitting (.392) and third in doubles(23). Miller earned a place on the 2001 all-Freedom Conference second-team after hitting.464, which was 48th in the final NCAADivision III statistics that ye a r, and tied a Roy a l s’single-game re c o rd with five hits in a gameagainst then FDU-Madison on April 21, 2001.

Dougherty, who has been accepted intothe Villanova University School of Law,started 25 of 26 games this past season andhit .326, with five doubles and two triples,to earn second-team all-FreedomConference honors for the second consecu-tive year. For her career, she started 95 of 97games and finished with a .320 battingaverage, including 12 doubles, five triplesand three home runs among her 93 hits.She also finished her career with 35 rbi’sand a .426 slugging percentage.

Pierangeli, whose athletic accomplish-ments have been mentioned above, earned adegree in communication at the University’scommencement exercises on May 30.
