Academic Regalia

During the commencement ceremony, students andfaculty wear academic costumes indicating the wear-ers' degrees and colleges or fields of study.

The Cap

The black mortarboard type is the most common capworn. Degree candidates wear cap tassels that areblack and white, the university colors. Colors worn bythe faculty vary according to their fields of study.

The Gown

Gowns, which are all black, are of three kinds. Thebachelor's gown is relatively simple, with lines fallingstraight from a fairly elaborate yoke. Its distinguishingcharacteristic is the long pointed sleeve. Braided silkencords are worn by students who have achieved specialscholastic recognition: gold signifies high honors;white, honors. The master's gown has sleeves with aback end extending down below the knee in a crescentshape. The doctor's gown is an elaborate costume withvelvet panels down the front and around the neck,with three velvet bars on the bell-shaped sleeves. It iscut much fuller than the other gowns and, unlike them,may be ornamented with color.

The Hood

For each college or field of study, there is a correspondingcolor. At Governors State University, colors for master'shoods are as follows:

Mayor Kurt Schmoke

The Honorable Kurt Schmoke, the mayor of Baltimore, Maryland, was first elected to that office in 1987.Presently, he is serving his second term as mayor. He has made education one of his priorities by estab-lishing liaisons among the schools and communities. Mayor Schmoke sees this approach "as a way touse schools as the catalyst and anchor of neighborhood revitalization."

The Baltimore native received a bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1971, and subsequently spenta year as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England. Upon his return, he enrolled at HarvardUniversity, earning a law degree in 1976. After graduation he joined the Baltimore law firm of Piper andMarbury. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed him to the White House Domestic Policy Staff.

In 1978, he was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney in Baltimore and served in that capacity until hiselection as state's attorney for Maryland in 1982. He won re-election as state's attorney before campaigningfor mayor in 1987. The Honorable Schmoke has had a longtime concern for criminal justice, serving bothon a Governor's commission and a Maryland state task force.

U.S. Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder

U.S. Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder of Colorado was first elected to Congress in 1972 and has beenre-elected nine times to represent a district including most of the city and county of Denver. She has beencalled a fiscally conservative liberal because of her strong stands against pork barrel politics and waste indefense spending.

In 1961, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota where she was a member of thePhi Beta Kappa honor society. Subsequent to earning her law degree from Harvard Law School in 1964,she practiced law and lectured at Denver colleges before her election to Congress.

Congresswoman Schroeder has been in the forefront of the progressive movement in the DemocraticParty, taking leadership on critical issues of foreign and military policy, arms control and disarmament,women's economic equity, educational opportunity, and civil and constitutional rights. Her leadershippositions in the House include Democratic Whip since 1978 and an appointment as Deputy Whip in 1987.In 1989, the Congresswoman was appointed to co-chair the Democratic Caucus' Task Force on NationalSecurity. She explored a bid for the presidency in 1987.

In the House of Representatives, Congresswoman Schroeder serves on the Armed Services, Judiciary,and Post Office and Civil Service Committees and the House Select Committee on Children, Youth, andFamilies. As the senior woman in Congress, she has long been the spokesperson for women's rights andneeds of children and families.

THE MACE

The Governors Mace, carried by theMarshalwho leads the academic procession, is asymbol of the authority of the university asa degree-granting institution. The legal au-thority of the university is grounded in theintellectual authority of the distinguishedfaculty who follow in the procession.In antiquity, the Mace was a weapon used toestablish the "authority" of the physicallystrong. Its transformation into a symbol ofintellectual authority is both a tribute to anda reminder of the civilizing force of auniversity's teaching, research, and com-munity service functions.Engraved on the four side-panels of theGovernors Mace, which was designed byDr. Virginio L. Piucci, are (1) the seal of thestate of Illinois; (2) a cardinal, the state bird;(3) the seal of the Illinois Board of GovernorsUniversities; and (4) an inscription whichreads "The Governors Mace, a symbol oftradition and authority of Governors StateUniversity, dedicated to the search for ex-cellence in the pursuit of truth, knowledge,and the love of learning. Presented by PeterLevin, friend of the university, June 2,1979."Atop the Mace is a silver rendition of theuniversity logo. The three sides of the "tri-angle" symbolize the university's teaching,research, and community service functions.The three lines visually suggest the shape ofa rocket, reminding us both that the univer-sity was founded two days after Neil Arm-strong set foot on the moon and that theuniversity is a hope-filled, pioneering com-munity, committed to a better future for allmen and women. The circle symbolizes thefact that the university is, indeed, a commu-nity. Finally, the fact that the tips of thetriangle reach beyond the circle indicatesthe university's outreach into the region,state, and nation and its commitment toteaching, research, and community service.
