HISTORY OF NJIT

The New Jersey Institute of Technology that weknow today has a rich history with its beginningsdeveloping from the industrial age. Like many ofthe port cities around the world, the Newark ofthe late 19th century was a thriving industrialcenter. Its factories churned out thread, metals, paints and leather goods. In Newark, ThomasEdison set the stage at his Ward Street factory forhis later astounding achievements, and Edisonrival EdwardWeston established the first factoryin the United States for commercial productionof dynamo electric machines.

On March 24, 1880, the Essex CountyAssemblyman in the state legislature introduced“An Act to Provide for the Establishment ofSchools of Industrial Education.” The NewarkBoard of Trade sponsored the bill. The Actestablished three schools of industrial educa-tion: one in Newark, one in Trenton, and one inHoboken. The first Board of Trustees met on July1, 1884. The Newark Technical School opened onMonday, February 9, 1885 with 88 students whoattended despite a terrible snowstorm.

The first class, mostly evening students, attendedclasses in a rented building at 21 West ParkStreet. Soon the facility became inadequate tohouse an expanding student body. To meet theneeds of the growing school, a second fund-raiser—the institution’s first capital cam-paign—was launched to support the construc-tion of a dedicated building for NewarkTechnical School. In 1886, under the leadershipof the school’s dynamic first director, Dr.Charles A. Colton, the cornerstone was laid atthe intersection of High Street and SummitPlace for the three-story building later to benamed Weston Hall in honor of the institu-tion’s early benefactor. A laboratory building, later to be called Colton Hall, was added to thecampus in 1913. Daniel Hodgdon served as thedirector of Newark Technical School from 1918to 1920.

Under Dr. Allan R. Cullimore, who led theinstitution from 1920 to 1949, the modestNewark Technical School was transformed intothe robust Newark College of Engineering.Campbell Hall was erected in 1925. During thelean years of the Depression and World War II,only the former Newark Orphan Asylum, nowEberhardt Hall, was purchased and renovatedby the college.

The post-war period was one of enormousactivity during which President Cullimore—liketoday’s post-Cold War university presidents—challenged the college to turn “war-time think-ing into peace-time thinking.” In 1946, about 75percent of the freshman class had served in thearmed forces. Robert W. Van Houten was actingpresident of NJIT from 1947 until 1950 whenthe board of trustees named him president.Cullimore Hall was built in 1958 and two yearslater the old Weston Hall was razed and replacedwith the current seven-story structure. Doctorallevel programs were introduced and six yearslater, in 1966, an 18-acre, four-building expan-sion was completed.William Hazell succeededDr. Van Houten as president of NJIT in 1970.

In 1973, with the addition of the New JerseySchool of Architecture, the institution hadevolved into a technological university, empha-sizing a broad range of graduate and under-graduate degrees and dedication to significantresearch and public service. A stronger-than-ever Newark College of Engineering remainedintact, but a new university name—New JerseyInstitute of Technology—signified the institu-tion’s expanded mission.

A broadened mission called for the creation ofa residential campus and the opening of NJIT’sfirst dormitory, Redwood Hall, in 1979 began aperiod of steady growth that continues today.Under the leadership of Saul K. Fenster, whoserved as president of NJIT from 1978 to 2002,two new schools were established at the univer-sity during the 1980s, the College of Scienceand Liberal Arts in 1982 and the School ofManagement in 1988. The Albert Dorman

Honors College was established in 1994, andthe College of Computing Sciences was createdin 2001. In 2008, New Jersey School ofArchitecture was reconstituted as the College ofArchitecture and Design.

Today, with its four-pronged mission ofeducation, research, service and economicdevelopment, the university plays a critical rolein shaping New Jersey’s future. As a majorpublic technological university, NJIT is animportant conduit through which technologyflows into society.

University researchers seek new knowledge toimprove processes and products for industry.Through public and private partnerships andeconomic development efforts, the universityhelps to grow new business ventures that fuelthe economy. NJIT’s research program isamong the fastest-growing in the nation andranks among the top ten technological univer-sities in the nation for research expenditures.

The university’s extensive community outreachand economic development programs includethe Enterprise Development Center (EDC),New Jersey’s first and largest small-businessincubator—one of the top 25 in the nation—focusing on high-technology companies andminority-owned businesses.

NJIT has been designated a Center of AcademicExcellence in Information Assurance Educationby the National Security Agency.

As the state’s Homeland Security TechnologySystems Center, NJIT serves as a consultant fortechnology evaluation and develops prototypesof integrated homeland security systems fortesting, demonstration and training. The Centerfocuses on areas already identified by the federalgovernment as vitalto national security: intelli-gence and warning, border and transportationsecurity, protecting critical infrastructure and keyassets, emergency preparedness and response, and defending against catastrophic threats anddomestic counter-terrorism.

NJIT’s educational programs prepare studentsto be leaders in the technology-dependenteconomy of the 21st century. Our educationalprograms grow out of a century-long traditionof academic excellence, and our student body isone of the most diverse in the United States.Ninety-eight percent of NJIT’s full-time facultyhold the terminal degree for their field. Theuniversity’s faculty:student ratio is 1:13.

NJIT is ranked in the nation’s top tier of nationalresearch universities, according to the U.S. NewsandWorld Report’s 2009 Annual Guide toAmerica’s Best Colleges.U.S. News also namedNJIT the nation’s seventh most diverse institutionof higher education and 19th in the nation amongthe most popular national universities based onyield rate. According to Forbes.com,NJIT ranksamong the nation’s 25 “most connected” campuses. The Princeton Review named NJIT among thenation’s top 25 campuses for technology and as oneof the nation’smost environmentally responsiblecampuses. In a study by Academic Analytics,NJIT was tenth among research universitiesspecializing in science, technology, engineeringand math based on faculty scholarly productivity. In addition,Diverse Issues in Higher Educationranks NJIT among the nation’s leading schools forgraduating minority engineering and computerscience students.

NJIT’s goal for the next decade is to be recognizedas a top-ranked public research university, as anational leader in the education of underrepre-sented groups for the technological professions, and as a catalyst for a healthy New Jersey economy.

TRADITION OF COMMENCEMENT

he pageantry and tradition of college anduniversity commencement ceremonies

originated more than 800 years ago in medievaluniversities of Europe.

These early universities were bodies or guilds ofstudents who took their name from the Latin worduniversitas, meaning a number of persons associat-ed into one guild or community. These guilds werededicated to the mastery of the arts and sciences. The master’s or doctoral degree denoted full mem-bership in the guild and admitted the recipient tothe practice of teaching. The bachelor’s degree, onthe other hand, originally indicated only that therecipient had entered a course of study leading tothe doctorate or master’s. Later, the baccalaureatecame to signify the completion of one level ofstudy preparatory to higher degrees.

The term “commencement,” which means begin-ning, originally referred to the occasion on whichthe student received the master’s degree and “com-menced” his career. Today, however, all levels ofdegrees are conferred at commencement.

Academic caps, gowns and hoods developed grad-ually from the long flowing robes that the teacherswore to protect themselves from the cold of themedieval buildings. As the scholars of the timewere usually clerics, their robes differed little fromthose used by the church orders. Slowly, certainstyles were designated for the universities, andthese, with minor modifications, are the costumesworn today. Hoods were originally fashioned afterthe monk’s cowl. The cap, with its tassels, evolvedfrom the skull caps of the scholar-monks. InFrance, where the degree system probably began, wearing the cap and gown marked the formaladmission of the student to the body of masters.

Today, academic regalia is standardized by theAmerican Intercollegiate Code.

In the United States it is traditional for academi-cians to wear the gown and hood of the universitywhere they received their highest degree.

The gowns of bachelor’s and master’s degree can-didates are usually without trimmings, whereasthose for the doctoral degree are faced down thefront with velvet and adorned with three velvetbars on the sleeves. The hood, a triangular fold ofcloth worn over the back of the gown, is faced withcolors which signify the field of study in which thedegree is earned. The colors of the lining are thoseof the college or university which granted thedegrees. The length of the hood increases witheach higher degree.

The cap may be the stiff-crown style (mortar-board), or the soft tam. The tassel for bachelor’sand master’s is black or color appropriate to themajor; those of doctor’s are black or golden. Thetassel is worn on the left side by those who havereceived a degree.

These colorful traditions culminate today in theacademic procession and the commencement cere-mony itself. They carry with them the splendorand majesty that is properly associated with such ahappy and important occasion and help remind usof the long tradition of higher education.

THE MACE

The mace, used today as a symbol of authority, also dates back to medieval times when it was usedfor an offensive weapon. Made wholly or partly ofmetal, and often spiked, it was used especially forbreaking armor.

In time, it became a staff borne by, carried before,or placed near a magistrate or other dignitary asan ensign of his authority.

The university’s mace is carried in the academicprocession, immediately preceding the undergradu-ate degree candidates. Presented as a class gift in theearly 1950’s, it is thirty inches in length and is markedat the head by the Bronze Seal of the university.

The medallion was presented to the university in1968 by the Alumni Association.
