Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers
On Tuesday evening, 05 April, our students took part in the annual Wairarapa Regional Finals of the Sheilah
Winn Shakespeare Festival. Our cast was made up of Keegan Hay, Luke Hempleman, Joseph Croskery,
Odette Bayliss, and Ben Dotrice. The play was directed by Dr Claire Hills and Mr Nathan Holder. The students performed very well and we are very proud of them. The highlight was Luke’s selection as the
Wairarapa’s representative in the National Shakespeare Schools Production to be held in Dunedin.
Congratulations Luke the selection is well deserved and reflects the high standards you have maintained
over the last few years. We wish you every success in Dunedin.
Please see the full report later in the newsletter.
Liam Kerr has had his skills as a footballer recognised with his selection into the Wairarapa United Central Football League team. Congratulations Liam we will follow your progress throughout the season with interest.
CROSS COUNTRY RESULTS Last week, we had our school cross country. Once again, following on from the excellent results achieved in
the school swimming and athletics, we had students break records. Congratulations to all the winners and
especially Shea Fowler, Mackenzie Murray and Brittany McGruddy who broke records. The full results follow:

FIRST XV RUGBY
PRE-SEASON TRAINING CAMP
Thursday 07 April 2016
Last weekend, the first XV rugby team kicked off the season with their annual pre-season training camp. The
team put in a full weekend of team bonding, fitness and skills training, goal setting and health and nutrition
workshops. It was great to see the team pulling together to welcome new players to the team. A huge thank
you to the coaches Mr Coley and Mr Wakefield, who gave up their weekend to help the team with this
valuable training strategy. Also to Mrs Bunny who gave up her time to run an equally as valuable food and nutrition workshop for the players.
Games will begin in May and are held Wednesdays at Memorial Park Turf from 5.00 p.m. The team will be
playing their first pre-season game against Makoura on Wednesday 13 April, at 5.00 p.m. Please come along and support our boys!
BEST UNDERSTANDING OF TEXT On Tuesday 05 April, our Chanel Shakespeare actors had a very successful night with their performance of Act 3,
Scene 3 and Act 3, Scene 4 from “Hamlet” in the Wairarapa Regional Finals of the University of Otago Sheilah
Winn Shakespeare Festival. This was held at Rathkeale College.
”Hamlet” is a particularly challenging play and unless we had the actors who were ready to step up to the
challenge of the scenes we chose to perform, we could not have offered it as our entry to the competition.
Marilyn Bouzaid, the organiser, said that in her many years of being involved in the competition the
performances from the schools were among the best she had seen in terms of the students’ understanding and
delivery of the text. This view was confirmed by Hannah Banks, the adjudicator, Wellington actor, director and
dramatist, who presented Chanel College with the award for the “Best Understanding of Text.” Awards like this
don’t happen unless everybody in the production steps up to the challenge. Mr Holder and Dr Hills were
particularly proud of their performance on the night.
Congratulations to the whole cast: Polonius Keegan Hey

LUKE HEMPLEMAN WINS A CHANCE TO GO TO THE GLOBE THEATRE IN LONDON Luke Hempleman, our Student Arts Leader, who played the part of King Claudius, was chosen as the direct entry student from the Wairarapa to go to the National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP). This will be held
in Dunedin from 24 September to 02 October. The adjudicator may select only one outstanding student from
each Regional Festival as its direct entry to the National Shakespeare Schools production. This will involve a
week long intensive residential course during which Luke will have the opportunity to work with high calibre
theatre professionals. Students will be organised in three groups to rehearse and perform 40 minute versions of
three of Shakespeare’s plays under the guidance of leading directors, culminating in two public performances.
This is a very special opportunity. Luke will be one of 46 students from throughout New Zealand chosen to
perform one of Shakespeare’s plays in Dunedin.
Luke is the fourth student from Chanel College to be given this opportunity. Previous winners have been
Nsubisi Mwakasingura, Joseph Raea and Anastasia Roberts.
During the week long Dunedin course, the 46 students will be continually assessed and 24 will be chosen to
represent New Zealand as members of the SCGNZ Young Shakespeare Company 2017. The 24 students
selected will have the opportunity to travel to London and Stratford-Upon-Avon for a tightly packed performance
and study trip and they will spend ten days at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre doing workshops, working with
Globe actors and directors and performing on the Globe stage.
We wish Luke every success in the opportunities that are now open to him and wish him the very best in the
selection process for the London trip.

school, please ensure it is a plain navy blue beanie with no logos or images on it.
JACKETS
The only jackets that are allowed to be worn to and from school and around the school yard, will be the
Chanel College jacket available from the uniform shop, or a plain black winter jacket that has no insignia or logos on it. Students will not be able to wear them indoors as classes all have adequate heating systems.
SHOES
No Converse style high tops, no ballet flats, no sneakers, no logos, colours or jewels. All shoes must be a
leather style and polishable footwear that is robust enough to provide support and adequate wet weather
protection.
We ask that you please support our school dress code and uniform expectations by only buying
approved school apparel / footwear. If for some reason, your child does not have a correct uniform
item, please send a note explaining why including a time frame of when you expect they will be in
correct uniform. The school will then lend your child a loan item until the uniform can be rectified.

GATEWAY Gateway placements continue to grow with students attending work experience in building, aged care, early
child care and radio.
Some of the Gateway students will be attending courses on health and safety and first aid before the end of
term. This will help them be ‘work ready’ to start placements next term.
Please remember there are theory units to complement the practical experience and these need to be
completed on a regular basis.
With the holidays just around the corner, we suggest to students to use the free time to work on any
outstanding work. Students can then start Term Two with a clean slate.
