Fantastic Programs at K.P.S.

This week, I have been fortunate to see first hand, many of the fantastic programs that occur at KPS on a regular basis. It is always great to see how our students take part in these activities – whether

in our school, in our local community or when out and about.

HPV & Push Cart Practice

On Tuesday, I travelled to Casey Fields with Craig Friebe, Matt Stear and the HPV and Push Cart teams for a day of practice at the Criterium Track. The students pushed, pedalled and rode their way around the 2.2 kilometre track numerous times as they readied themselves for their up-coming competitions. On Wednesday, a number of our Year 6 students visited Korumburra Secondary College for the first of their Early Bird Transition sessions. This allows these students to visit KSC and take part in sessions that will help them ease some of the anxieties associated with moving on to secondary college. Vicspell

On an obviously busy Wednesday, our 2 regional Vicspell student winners, Kieran Lewis (Year 5) and Joel Findlay (Year 6) , travelled to Sale for the Provincial Finals. While neither of the boys were ultimately winners on the day, it was another example of some of our students excelling in their chosen field. Both boys successfully made it through a number of rounds of the competition before coming up against their challenging words. The words that stumped the boys were ‘guaranteed’ for Kieran and ‘courtesy’ for Joel. Congratulations

to Joel and Kieran on your efforts this week.

Division Athletics Carnival

Some 34 of our students, Mrs Snooks and Mr Pirouet travelled to Mary MacKillop College in Leongatha for the Division Athletics Carnival held on, yes you guessed it Wednesday, to compete in a range of events. It is great to be able to announce that we had some 14 students make it through to the next round of this competition which will be held at Newborough soon. There were various impressive performances by both relay teams and individuals and their results are included in Mrs Snooks’ report elsewhere in the newsletter. Mrs Snooks has spent many Recess and Lunchtime periods working with not only our athletes but our basketball and netball teams getting them ready for their various events. Thanks

Shelley for your support of all these students.

School Council

At Wednesday evening’s School Council meeting, we welcomed Year 1 teacher Ms. Tara Young who is filling a casual Staff vacancy created by Candice Huntly being overseas on a teaching exchange. I’m sure Tara’s head was spinning after trying to take in all the information and discussions that took place during the meeting. Good luck and thank you Tara for taking on this important position

amongst our school community.

Book Fair

This week the Library has been buzzing with our annual Book Fair. This is always a great week as the students have the opportunity to purchase great books and other reading related materials. Thank you to Mrs Helen Cripps for co-ordinating this event and the Year 6

students who have been assisting her with the sale of items.

Newhaven P.S. Staff Visit

On Monday, we had some 14 staff from Newhaven Primary School spend time in the BER building meeting and working with staff members Laurie Bier and Nigel Kilpatrick as well as a number of our students. They are looking to implement a 1:1 netbook program and were keen to see how it werks and hear from our students who use them on a daily basis. Thank you to Laurie, Nigel and students for

planning this event and working with our visitors on Monday.

Newsletter

Don’t forget that our newsletter is available on our school website as well as via our Year 4 – 6 students’ netbooks after they have downloaded it. We also keep a few spare ‘hard copies’ at the Office

for those families without internet connections at home

Kanga Cricket for Year 3 & 4 Students

Today, our Year 3 and 4 students had the opportunity to take part in cricket clinics learning the skills required to play Kanga Cricket. Cricket Victoria’s Rob Wood ran the event with help from staff and I’m sure the students involved enjoyed their various activities and games they played, in readiness for a possible upcoming competition. Thank you to Mrs Jacqui Rotthier for organising this

event.

Water Aware Program

On Thursday evening, 8 of our Year 6 Leadership Team are presenting their findings as a result of the Water Aware program that they have been recently involved with. Supported by South Gippsland Water, the students have worked through a variety of activities and programs looking at water and its uses in our local environment. This is another great example of our local cluster of schools working together with students from Loch, Nyora, Poowong, Korumburra S.C. and K.P.S. all taking part in the program. I am looking forward to seeing the students’ presentations tonight at Korumburra Secondary College. Good luck to Erin, Tyson, Lizzie,

Tate, Cayli, Eric, Chelsea and Trent for tonight’s presentations.

Coming Events

And while this week has been busy, the coming days see even more events involving our students. Friday will see our Year 5 & 6 basketballers compete in the District Basketball day-long event to be held at the Korumburra Rec. Centre. Next Monday, our Year 4 students travel to Allambee for their camp where they will participate in wide range of activities over 3 days. Our Year 5 / 6 mixed netball team travel to Melbourne to compete in the annual competition to be held at the State Hockey & Netball Centre on Tuesday. Wednesday sees our students who have been taking part in the Maths Olympiad competition have their next activity. Next Wednesday also sees our first transition session for our 2014 Prep students to be held during the morning. Thank you to Mrs Kerrie McPherson for all her co-ordination of this important transition program as well as the other staff who have supported Kerrie to allow these sessions to occur. Our teachers will also be spending the week planning and reviewing programs in readiness for Term 4. Each team will have 1 day to work on their programs in readiness for the final term of our 2013 school year. PSG Meetings will also be held for a number of our families,

supporting students with a variety of special needs.

WOW! What a hectic 2 weeks it will have been by the end of next week! All these programs and special events simply could not take part without the extra time and effort put in by our class and specialist staff together with all our ES staff. Thank you all for supporting our students in the many ways you do.

CASEY FIELDS – CRITERIUM CYCLING TRACK

The wheels are definitely in motion for the KPS HPV and Pushcarts teams this year. Our visit to the Criterium Cycling Track at Casey Fields

on Tuesday definitely proved that!!!

Upon arriving at the track all students assisted with setting up for the day. As a group we then took a leisurely stroll around the 2.254km track,

mainly so the HPV team could visualise how they would approach each corner and section of the track. After a quick drink, snack and a

review of the day’s expectations the practise session was underway.

The pushcarters were put through their paces by an ever watchful Mr Gray, including the sprint and endurance events. Mr Gray also timed the

team with their efforts to dismantle the pushcart. This was achieved in under 17 seconds. The pushcarters also took on the 2.254km circuit on

bikes and won. Awesome effort gang!!

The HPVers were placed into 2 squads of 5, one squad taking it in turns to ride around the track in the vehicle then assist with changeovers.

The other squad rode around the track to act as ‘other vehicles’ on the track. The squads then changed over.

The day provided a superb opportunity for the HPV squad to obtain first-hand experience of the circuit ahead of the Casey Field’s event in

October. Using correct gears, taking corners and passing other vehicles safely were all practised on the day.

Some great ‘on-board’ photos were taken with our team’s brand new Go Pro camera setup donated by Alsta Angling. Close to 2 hours worth

of time lapsed photos documented how well our riders navigated around the track. Thanks so much to Wayne and Norm for the camera and

equipment.

A massive thanks must also go to our ever reliable School Chaplain Matt Stear for driving the team to and from Casey Fields.

Mr Gray and I were extremely proud of how the students represented our school on the day.

HPV SAUSAGE SIZZLE FUNDRAISER

MONDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER @ KORUMBURRA PRIMARY SCHOOL

We have been asked to run a sausage sizzle at this year’s Bike Ed. Challenge. All members of the HPV and Pushcart teams will be

assisting selling sausages in bread and a variety of cold drinks to help raise money for our teams. I am seeking the assistance of

any HPV Pushcart parents that would like to help us out by cooking snags on the day. Please contact Mr Friebe ASAP.

Spot The Spelling Mistake

Congratulations to the students who spotted the spelling mistake in my last newsletter report – “forwood”, instead of “forward”. Great spelling mistake spotters were Abbey Webb, Brodie Kennedy, Connor Murrell, Joel Findlay, Haley Bell, Sophie McKenzie and Emily Boucher. Well

done everyone! See how you go spotting this week’s very tricky spelling error in my report!

Middle Department News

The Year 4’s have been busily preparing for camp next week. We are all very excited about spending two nights at Allambee and facing some of our fears on the Giant Swing or Flying Fox. We have spent time talking about how to become more independent and about trying new things. I’m sure that all Year 4’s will be at school at 8:30 Monday morning in preparation for heading off. Can all parents p lease remember to hand any medication that will be needed to Emily Burrows and make sure that it is clearly named, as well as ensuring all appropriate medical

forms have been completed.

The Year 3 and 4 classes will begin a new Kanga Cricket program this afternoon during our usual combined sport time, which will be a fantastic learning experience for those both new to cricket and already competent in the sport. We hope to eventually put a Kanga Cricket

team together to take to the Cricket Fun Day next term.

EB4 had a very special visit from Morgaine Bourke’s show dog Nero on Tuesday morning. He is a Newfoundland and currently weighs 45kg! We learnt a lot about this breed and what showing a dog entails. We all can’t wait to see him again in a few months when he has continued to

grow and will be closer to his full size of 75kg!

If you drop into the Year One and Two rooms you may find a variety of Australiana surrounding you. We have been looking at Australia and specifically Native Australian Animals. Do you know what makes an animal native? We’ve found out that native animals are only found naturally in one country, sometimes only in one area of that country! We’ve looked at the names of native Australian animals and their characteristics. We’ve looked at their locations within Australia, and the Year Two students have chosen one animal that they were particularly interested in to create a project. The Year Two projects include, after lots of research and reading, fact files, written reports and a construction representing their chosen animal’s environment. They also include a spoken presentation where the students in EZ2 have discovered that cue

cards are really helpful! Check out some of our project posters…

The Year Ones and Twos are really looking forward to culminating all their learning with a visit to Healesville

Sanctuary on the 17th of September – stay tuned for more news.
