Carroll County lies amid the waters of the Wabash and Tippecanoe

Rivers and Wildcat and Deer Creeks and takes its name from Charles

Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence.

In Delphi, the county seat, you will find exceptional architecture, the

County Historical Museum in the beautiful limestone Courthouse, and

ten miles of well groomed walking trails, a portion of which stretches

along a water-filled section of the Wabash & Erie Canal. Considered an

engineering wonder, the early canal system opened Indiana to immigra­

tion and created an economic and cultural connection to New York and

New Orleans. Learn more about this area's history with interactive

displays in Canal Park's Wabash & Erie Canal Conference & Interpre­

tive Center.

You can also take a trip over Indiana's oldest continually used

bridge, the 1837 Burnett's Creek Arch. A cut stone structure near

Lockport, Burnett's Creek Arch is a National Register of Historic

Places site. Lockport holds two other National Register sites,

Potawatorni Spring and The Burris House. This frame house served as

an inn in the 1840's while the spring was a well-known watering place

for Indians and early settlers.

In the southern part of the county visit the 1845 Adams Mill and

adjacent, fully restored covered bridge located near Cutler. Lancaster

Bridge, another Carroll County covered bridge, is near Owasco. All three

of these structures are on the National Register of Historic Places. For

sources of outdoor recreation, don't miss Flora and Burlington Parks or

the county's Deer Creek Park, near the town of the same name. While

you are there, take a look at "Sycamore Row," a stand of trees which grew

out of the ends of logs from a

corduroy road. Follow one or all of the

available scenic tours with your

automobile, canoe, or bicycle and see

all of Carroll County's beauty -

past, present, and future.

I addition to its Prairie Schooner wagon, early tools, dolls, paintings, and other

displays , the Carroll County Historical Museum houses a Genealogy Department with marriage records dating back to

1828, birth and death records from 1882 , and similar r ecords from surrounding counties. Locat ed on the ground floor, the fr iendly curator, her assistant and volunteer s are proud of their collection and willing to help with searches for Carroll County relatives.

Adams Mill m s Mill, powered by the

vater s of Wildcat Creek, was built in 1845 by John

pegs. Posts and beams are made of walnut and the joists are of oak. All of the lumber was har vested locally and hand-hewn or cut on site. The mill produced assorted grades of flour for over 100 years

Adams. The mill is now a Museum ef Americana open to the public for tou rs on weekends and by special arrangement. The mill is a prime example of post and beam construction common to the 19th century agricultural structures in Indiana. No nails were used in the original framework, only wooden

during the tenure of nine owner s. Finely ground cake flour was a specialty of Adams Mill. Commercial milling ceased in the 1950s. Most original machinery is still operational.

he Interpretive Center, the only museum designed to tell the story of the Wabash & Erie Canal, concen­

trates on the 44 year operational history of the Canal. From the vision of George Washington to the final collapse of the Canal in 1876, the Center tells the stor y of the building of the Canal and its impact on the settlem ent of the Midwest. From Toledo, Ohio on Lake Erie to Evansville, Indiana on the Ohio River, the 468 mile long Canal was the second longest canal in the world . The kids and adults alike will love the interactive exhibits and exciting visual displays depicting Indiana 's colorful history.

Camden Museum and Public Library

Ucated on the second floor of the. Camden Public

Library, the Camden Museum opened in 1986 . It began as a Commupity Improvement Project for the Camden Lit~rary Club and has grown

to four rooms of m emorabilia, which tell the history of the town, its school, and its businesses. The curtain from the Camden Opera House, turn-of-the century opera clothes, a land grant signed by President Martin Van Buren, and school trophies and pictures dating back to the first graduating class of 1899 provide a glimpse of life over the years in this sm all town.

Rural Architecture 1 t can be told from Carroll County by

ust looking at its rural architecture, from the one room school houses that

are found around the county, such as the Mullin School House, to the historic bridges and fine architecturally significant homes that have sheltered families for decades. The signifi­cance of agriculture in our communities can be seen by many rural features such as barns and corn cribs. A barn played an important role

in the livelihood of Carroll County farmers and many old barns can be seen around the county today including three round barns.

Many fine homes built during the 1800s still grace the county today. A walking architectural tom is available in Delphi and

our county can boast of 20 National Register listings - most notably our 1917 Neoclassical style Carroll County Courthouse.

TI1e courthouse is constructed of Indiana limestone. Inside you will find a mosaic floor of colored tiles balanced by a stained glass dome. The courthouse houses the Carroll County Historical Museum.

Carroll County harbors many fine historic bridges. Burnett's Creek Arch , built in 1837 is one oflndiana's oldest remaining bridges. The stone arch was originally built to permit the Wabash & Erie Canal to pass over Burnett's Creek. Many of our historic bridges are highlighted by type of structure and location on the map.

T:ransportation in Carroll County

has changed greatly in the last 188

years. Initially, it consisted of water travel on the Wabash or Deer Creek. Land

travel routes followed ancient Indian trails

through densely wooded forests. The first

roads were dirt paths barely wide enough

for a wagon and were lined with mud holes

and tree stumps.

The opening of the Wabash & Erie Canal in the 1840's connected Delphi to

cities and towns in the East and to towns

and ports to the south. By the 1870 's the

canal had given way to the steam

engines of the railroads. The crossing

of two major railroad lines connected

Carroll County to major cities in all

directions.

Overland travel evolved from dirt

trails to wood plank roads with toll

houses. First wood, then iron, and

finally concrete bridged rivers and

streams that were originally forded .

The first plank road was from Delphi to

Frankfort. Others soon followed. In 1877,

Carroll County further improved upon trans­

portation routes by introducing gravel roads.

The next major change in transportation

was the introduction of the Interurban electric railway. These single car transports,

known as the Ft. Wayne &.Wabash Valley Traction Co., ran through Delphi and other small towns.

With the coming of paved highways, the old

Interurbans gradually gave way to motor busses

as the leading form of public transportation.

Paved roads have since replaced most of the

gravel roads in the county.

Today, you will see a contrast between past

and present. Carroll County is home to two

airports: the Delphi and Flora Municipal Airports, yet you may find yourself

sharing the road with a horse

and buggy.

Of this large number of bridges, over 20 have been identified as histor ically significant. They vary in style and materials, from the older stone arch and wooden coYered bridges, to those later made of metal and concrete. This map designates the location and type of 17 bridges. Carroll County offers some of the most captivating outdoor recreation in the region.

Come enjoy CaiToll County and create your ovvn adventure with biking, boating, fishing, hiking, golfing, canoeing or picnicking in our beautiful countryside.

Cycling is more than a pastime, for some it is a serious practice on our more than 500 miles of paved roads that wind along scenic water­

ways through farm country. Ride

your bike through Adams Mill Covered Bridge or to the Mill itself. You mig have to share the road with a tract or even a white-tailed deer, but the stress ofriding among fast­moving vehicles is nearly nonexistent!

Fishermen can try their luck at a variety of streams and lakes. Deer Creek, Wildcat Creek, and Rock Creek are some of the smaller streams while the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers are the larger ones flowing through the county. Knop Lake is a 42-acre, state-ovvned

property in Carroll County and provides fishing, non-motorized boat use, a fish and wildlife habitat, and access to both the North and South Forks ofWildcat Creek. If you like catfish, bass,

or bluegill, you will find them waiting for you in the streams of Carroll County.

Canoeing and kayaking opportunities are endless in Carroll County. A scenic Wildcat Creek trip starts at historic Adams Mill, an

authentic water-powered mill constructed in

1845 and has paddlers passing under Xenia Iron Bridge and Lancaster Covered Bridge. Floating dovvn Deer Creek ends at Riley Park in

Delphi just before it empties into the Wabash River. On this trip you will see slate and limestone cliffs, waterfalls, sycamores, and

wildlife including, blue herons, geese, hawks, and kingfishers. The beautiful Wabash River runs parallel to the old Wabash & Erie Canal towpath. A trip down any other river in the state will not give as complete a view of

Indiana as the Wabash. It is a

wide, slow-moving meandering river full of game fish. The

Tippecanoe River is ranked as ' one of the nicest rivers in

North America. The river's amazingly clear

waters and scenery provide a memorable canoe, kayak, or fish- ing trip. Look for

put-in and take-out points on the

map marked by a canoe and find

more descriptive detail on

the website. Golfers

should try Carroll County Country Club Golf Course, a 9-hole course with just enough challenge to make it interesting. You can find other 9oif courses in the couno/ marked 011 the map.

If you arc looking for a little more adven­ture, come jump out of an airplane with trained professionals from Air Indiana Skydive at the Flora Municipal Airport. It will be a memory you won't forget.

Explore indigenous flora on over 10 miles of well-groomed hiking trails that meander along both Deer Creek and the Wabash River near Delphi. Find trail information at historic Canal Park or Trailhead Park.

While in Delphi, be sure to visit Riley Park along Deer Creek. It is a charming little

park named after Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley who visited and often wrote about Delphi in the 1880's. A lighted one-mile valking trail, playground and shelters make

Flora Community Park a favorite. Burlington and Camden Parks offer great community activities, perfect for a summer picnic or catch the action of America's favorite pastime: baseball. See map far park locations.

The county parks include French Post Park, located where Rock Creek flows into the Wabash River and provides a lovely backdrop for a family picnic or fishing excursion. While there, you can learn about its historic significance as a French trading post with Indians living along the Wabash. Deer Creek Park, a 12-acre park just off SR 218 has access to Deer Creek and offers camp sites with hook-ups for electricity. Other camping facilities are available at nearby Americus or Indiana Beach.

family's enjoyment. The season kicks-off with the Carroll County Garden Fair in April at the Flora Community Park This is truly a gardener 's delight ! The Carroll County Hog Jog in June is known throughout the midwest. It includes a 1 OK and 2-Mile run, a 2-mile walk and even a 50 meter Runt Jog for the kids. If classic car s interest you, a cruise-in follows.

The Canal Days festival is held every 4th of July weekend with na:rrated trail walks, activities for children, and plenty of food. The most historically significant county festival is Old Settlers which has taken place each August for more

than 150 years! It's roots trace back to an annual meeting of the original settler s of the county.
