1. Press On/Enter key to power up the instrument. (Please refer to General Operating Instructions for the Colorimeter for further instructions.) Scroll down to desired test and press enter. This will allow the instrument to warm up while preparing the reagent test vial, thus saving time. Preliminary Procedure (Caution!! This test contains hazardous materials. Use of fume hood is recommended. Refer to MSDS for proper handling.)

2. Transfer 40 ml of the water to be tested into the conical flask while stirring using a Hotplate I

Stirrer (It is recommended that a magnetic stir bar be used also) 3. Carefully add exactly 5 mL of Reagent A (Use caution: contains Concentrated

Hydrochloric Acid. Extremely corrosive!) 4. Carefully add exactly 2 mL of Reagent B 5. Carefully add exactly 8 drops of Reagent C 6. Allow solution to stir for 10-15 minutes 7. While the solution is stirring in step 3e, insert glass wool (provided) loosely into scrubber

assembly as shown in figure 1 8. Impregnate the wool with 8 drops of Reagent D (Be sure Reagent D does not drip out of

scrubber tube)

9. Carefully add exactly 5 mL of the indicator solution to the absorber tube (see figure 1)

Arsine generator assembly

Arsenic Reagent Instructions - Page 2 10. Carefully connect the scrubber tube to the absorber tube using the metal clamp. After solution

has stirred in step 3e, add the entire contents of capsule from the bag labeled Zinc. 11. Immediately connect the scrubber/absorber assembly to the conical flask. Be sure the

connection is firm. Vacuum grease (not included) can be used in this joint, however if the connection is made properly, this is not necessary. If the connections are made properly, there should be bubbles coming through absorber assembly. Allow 30 minutes for solution to complete reaction

12. After 30 minutes, add heat to the conical flask for 3-4 minutes to ensure the reaction is

complete. 13. Preparing the blank vial

a. Select the capped vial marked Arsenic Blank (supplied with each test and will be used for all 50 tests)

b. Thoroughly wipe the vial clean 14. Preparing the reagent test vial

a. Uncap one of the reagent test vials b. Disconnect the absorber tube from the scrubber tube by removing the clamp c. Fill the empty vial with contents of the absorber tube d. Recap and thoroughly wipe the vial clean

15. Performing the test

a. Insert the cleaned blank vial in the cuvette opening of the Colorimeter b. Place the black cover over the vial and press enter c. When prompted, insert the cleaned reagent test vial into cuvette opening d. Place the black cover over the vial and press enter e. Read the results displayed on the screen and record

16. Press enter to continue and follow instructions on screen 17. After completion of test, discard the solution in the glassware and vial according to EPA

regulations IMPORTANT & HELPFUL STEPS

Select desired test to allow the instrument to warm up Be sure the outside of the vial is thoroughly cleaned by dipping vial in water and wiping clean

with a dry towel. Foreign residue of any kind or smudges from handling may affect results Rinse all glassware with distilled water when finished Be sure all connections are tight It may not be necessary to add 8 drops of Reagent D to every test that is performed. If upon

successive tests the glass wool is very moist and there are no color changes in the wool, addition of Reagent D may not be necessary.

Instructions for: Turbidity Method: EPA I 80. 1 (USEPA Approved) Range: 0 — I 1TU, 0 - 1 00 NTU, 0 — 800 NTU

1. Before performing test, choose the desired range and standard to be tested.

Range 0 – 1 then use 0.5 NTU Standard Range 0 - 100 then use 50 NTU Standard

Range 0 - 1000 then use 200 NTU Standard 2. Mark two clean empty vials using a fine point permanent marker on the vial glass that is

exposed (when inserted into cuvette opening) slightly above the keypad. This will allow the user to place the vial in the proper alignment each time in the cuvette opening of the Colorimeter.

3. Fill one marked empty vial with the proper NTU Standard and thorough ly wipe clean.

4. Choose the correct turbidity test on the Colorimeter and press enter. Please refer to General

Operating instructions for the Colorimeter for further information.) 5. Insert the filled standard vial into the Colorimeter taking special care to align the mark on the

vial with the mark on the keypad next to the cuvette opening, place cover over vial and press enter.

Important Note: If performing the 0 — 1 range, then you must reuse the same vial the standard is in for the water to be tested. Follow Step 6 to 8. If performing 0 — 100 or 0 — 1000 range, then the standard vial may be kept for reuse with other Turbidity tests. Follow Step 9 and 10.

6. Pour standard solution back into its original container for later use. Rinse the now empty vial

three or more times with distilled water. 7. Fill the cleaned vial with water to be tested, thoroughly wipe clean, insert into Colorimeter

taking special care align mark on the vial with mark on the keypad, place cover over vial and press enter.
