The Virginia Colony was a royalcolony settled by those who supported the king. After Cromwell died. Charles 11became kine in 1660, hut his powers had limits placed on them by the government. Bythen, there were northern and southern English colonies in North America. The I)utchcontrolled the land in between Massachusetts. New Hampshire, Connecticut, andRhode Island to the north and Maryland and Virginia to the south.

The Duke of York gave the southern part of the colony toLord John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. They established the proprietary colonyof New Jersey. When it did not make expected prohts.
