Dematacious (Dark Colored) Mold Colony

Terminology• Dermatomycoses –Fungal infections of all

layers of the skin, hair and nails caused by fungi other than the “dermatophytes”

• Dermatophytoses-Fungal infections caused by one of the “dermatophytes” (fungi of the genera Microsporum, Trichophyton, Epidermophyton)

• Cutaneous mycosis-Any fungal infection of the skin

Terminology

• Ringworm (synonym Tinea)-Circular fungal lesion of the smooth area of the skin, scalp, feet and nails. Most of these infections are caused by the dermatophytes (ancient physicians thought they were actually worms (Tinea is Latin for worm) beneath the skin.)

• Tinea capatis- Ringworm of the head, including scalp

• Tinea unguium-Ringworm of the nails

• Tinea cruris-Ringworm of the groin (jock itch)

obvious projection (e.g. smooth areas of the skin)

• Echinulate-Having spiny projections (the name is derived from a group of animals, the eqinulates, which includes the starfish, that have spiny skin

• Fusiform-Spindle shaped, elongated oval structure with pointed ends (body of an airplane is called a“fuselage”)
