How about you? With the grounds crew finishing up new drainage areas, our course will soon be in premier shape and ready for long beautiful days of golf. Thank you to the golfers that participated in the Colonial Cup. It was a great turnout; Team Palmer put it to Team Nicklaus! Our Season Opener is right around the corner, so don’t miss out. In the month of March Colonial has hosted: (to name a few) Thomasville Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Coffee & Connections” with 30 community leaders and business people in attendance, including our Mayor, Raleigh York. 75 members and their guests on Wednesday, 27th to hear JT Parrothead (acoustic guitarist) entertain and enjoy a sumptuous buffet prepared by Chef Eric and his staff. Many people asked if we were going to have JT back. We certainly will. High Point Christian Academy’s auction with 151 people in attendance, and a surprise birthday party for Jenny Rains with “Brothers Pearl Band,” who were exceptional. Great job Jeff Rains, keeping that a secret. Great party! The Assurance Group sends their lady employees for lunch each month and are having a great time. The Colonial Cup ran smoothly and a good time was had by all. Novant held a dinner for 80 people and we still have a rehearsal and wedding to come the 29th and 30th. Busy month and our staff is holding their heads high as they prepare each event and provide great service. The bartenders and clubhouse department heads attended a class provided by the Randolph County ABC Commission. RASP [Responsible Alcohol Seller Program]. Designed to certify us for completing this program. Colonial carries licenses for Liquor, Beer, unfortified Wine, and fortified Wine, but does not hold a “brown bag” license. This means: ALL BEVERAGES CONSUMED ON THE PREMISIS OF CCC MUST HAVE BEEN PURCHASED FROM COLONIAL COUNTRY CLUB. This includes all outside areas, including the golf course, and the clubhouse. We need to remain compliant with the ABC Commission of NC’s rules and regulations or our liquor license can be revoked and a fine implemented against us. Please help keep your club’s reputation a good one with the state of North Carolina. Honor on and off the course. Chef Eric held a training course for all staff and implemented some new and hopefully improved ideas to help the staff be more steadfast with service for our membership. Team work to better serve you. In April we will host three Proms so please bear with us as we hold these events. Maybe some young person who comes in will someday be a member based on their experience here at Prom. Good Friday fish special will be 19th. Breakfast with the Bunny will be Saturday, April 20th and Easter Sunday Buffet Sunday, April 21st. CCC’s Season Opener will be April 6th. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for our “Speak Easy” event on the 12th of April. Take you back to the 1920-30’s during Prohibition….step back in time and see what it must have been like. You will need a password to get in. FIND THE PASSWORD IN THE UNDERLINED WORDS IN THIS ARTICLE. Please join us for this adventure with songs and music by Anitra & Kyle Spencer (One Voice Productions). The remarkable untold story of Thomas Jefferson’s three daughters—two white and free, one black and en-slaved—and the divergent paths they forged in a newly independent America Thomas Jefferson had three daughters: Martha and Maria by his wife, Martha Wayles Jefferson, and Harriet by his slave Sally Hemings. In Jefferson’s Daughters, Catherine Kerrison, a scholar of early American and women’s histo-ry, recounts the remarkable journey of these three women—and how their struggle to define themselves reflects both the possibilities and the limitations that resulted from the American Revolution. Although the three women shared a father, the similarities end there. Martha and Maria received a fine convent school education while they lived with their father during his diplomatic posting in Paris—a hothouse of intellectual ferment whose celebrated salonnières are vividly brought to life in Kerrison’s narrative. Once they returned home, however, the sisters found their options limited by the laws and customs of early America. Harriet Hemings followed a different path. She escaped slavery—apparently with the assistance of Jefferson him-self. Leaving Monticello behind, she boarded a coach and set off for a decidedly uncertain future. For this groundbreaking triple biography, Kerrison has uncovered never-before-published documents written by the Jefferson sisters when they were in their teens, as well as letters written by members of the Jefferson and Hemings families. She has interviewed Hemings family descendants (and, with their cooperation, initiated DNA testing) and searched for descendants of Harriet Hemings. May’s Book….. Ben Miller, PGA

I would like to start off by saying thank you to everyone who participated in this years Colonial Cup. It has been approximately 6 years since our last Colonial Cup. We had great weather and an awesome turnout. The golf course was in great shape and the match was very competitive. I would like to congratulate the Palmer team on their victory. The team consists of the players as follows: Captain Ben Miller, Bob Wilson, Bryan Fary, Allen Brest, Lanny Jarrell, Jim Armentrout, Gary Thrift, Adam Perryman, Perry Skeen, Randall Cromer, Richard Sanders, Gregg Humphreys, Dan Outlaw, Steve Leonard, Bruce Campbell, Dirk Swing, Todd Barrow. Now that time has changed we will be able to offer our after 2:00 twilight golf rate which will be $15.00 for eighteen holes, instead of $20.00. This will be available every day. We will be doing our yearly driving range billing this month. I wanted to make everyone aware of a slight needed price increase. Individuals will be $199 a year and families will be $249 a year. I would like to encourage everyone that is not on our range plan to take advantage of this awesome deal. This is just a small price to pay to improve our golf swings and our short games. Any new member that signs up on the range plan for this year will receive a free 20-minute golf lesson. I have recently purchased a golf launch monitor that I will be using to help fit golf equipment, give golf lessons with and I will also be offering a fitting session for a small fee to make sure you are in the proper equipment or if you just need to make minor adjustments to your previous equipment, so please stop by the golf shop or call me for further information

Spring has finally sprung, and the weather seems to be improving. We were able to get the course sprayed with our pre and post emergent, and you will see the winter weeds start to die out if they haven’t already. We have finally started to dry out enough to get some other projects completed as well. We have recently gone through all the bunkers and edged and added sand where needed. The agronomy team has also implemented a new style of raking that should help improve playing conditions while also saving some time on labor. This new style is known as the “Aussie style” and has become very popular over the last several years. This style focuses on raked bunker floors with smoothed faces that are only raked when disturbed. The sand on the edges will begin to get firmer as it gets left alone, and thus it will lead to less plugged lies as well as less washouts after heavy rains. I believe this new method will provide more consistent conditions throughout the course. We have also been spending a lot of time working on hole 18. We have removed several trees ourselves and we brought in an outside company with a bucket truck to limb up the rest of them down the left hand side. One of our members, Chris Justice (CJ) and his crew did a great job with the tree trimming. Now that the treework has been completed we will seed the area with fescue. We will have to keep this area wet while we are getting the grass established so please make sure to stay out of the new fescue beds. We will have them roped off, but if you have to go in to retrieve your golf ball please be careful. As the golf season heats up and we are getting more play, pease do your part in ensuring the golf course stays in the best shape possible by filling divots, repairing ball marks, raking bunkers, and following all cart rules. I look forward to seeing you all on the course soon!
