• What are some of the dangers and hardships early colonists would have faced in the New World? List as many as you can think of.

• Look at this map of the 13 British Colonies. If you were an early colonist, would you rather settle in the New England, Middle or Southern part of the colonies? Explain why.

Colonial America

• A colony is an area under control by a country and occupied by settlers from the Mother Country

• The Mother Country is the country that “owns” the colony• In the era of history we are studying:

the 13 colonies in North America belonged to the Mother Country, England

The Colonial Period in American history: 1607-1776

Settlers came to the 13 colonies for a variety of reasons: make money, practice their religion freely, to “start over” in life, etc.

Roanoke: The first English attempt at a colony in the New World.

• 100 English colonists arrived at Roanoke Island (in what is now the outer banks of North Carolina) in 1585.

• They arrived too late to plant crops and didn’t bring enough food to last all winter.

• A few settlers headed back to England to get more supplies.

Roanoke• Most left when other supply

ships arrived.• The 15 people who remained

at Roanoke had completely disappeared by the time 150 more colonists arrived at Roanoke in 1587– they only found a skeleton.

• The first English baby born in the New World, Virginia Dare– was born in Roanoke in 1587– to members of the 2nd group of colonists.

Roanoke• In 1588, the governor took

ships back to England for more supplies.

• Due to a war with Spain, they were unable to return until 1590.

• When they did return, there were no English settlers to be found and only this clue: CRO carved into a tree trunk.

• What happened to the English colonists at Roanoke is considered a mystery still to this day.

• Excavations at Roanoke– to solve the mystery– continue today.

• Roanoke Colony was a failure– it earned the nickname: the Lost Colony.

• The first two successful English colonies were Jamestown (1607) and Plymouth (1620).

• NOTES: When you have read both, create a Venn Diagram on computer paper. Title your diagram appropriately. Record notes– in sentence form and in your own words– to compare these early settlements (you should have notes from all 7 annotation categories for each of the two early settlements).

• ILLUSTRATIONS: Around each side, make 6 detailed illustrations of how you visualize each early colony. (6 of the 7 notes categories should be represented in your illustrations– provide a brief caption to identify the category). You will end up with 12 total illustrations.

• Be colorful! No stick figures! Little to no white space
