Fearaim forchaoin filte romhaibh go lir chuig l spesialta na nGael

    anseo i Munich.

It is a wonderful and indeed novel pleasure for me to be afforded the

opportunity to extend a huge cad mle filte to you all on this wonderful

occasion for the Gaels of Europe and most particularly for those of the

    Munchen Colmcilles GAA Club.

When Micheal Cusack and the founding fathers of the Association

established Cumann Lthchleas Gael in 1884, they could hardly have

foreseen the enormous impression the Association would make on the

day-to-day life of the Irish community, both at home and abroad. They

most certainly would not have envisaged teams from such diverse corners

of Europe as Paris, The Hague, Luxembourg, Frankfurt, Wurzburg and

Munich descending on Furstenfeldbruck for this weekend's festivities. But

when the Irish Diaspora spread to every corner of the globe throughout the

twentieth century, they brought with them their music and culture and of

    course our unique games.

The GAA continues to develop overseas because of the extraordinary

commitment, generosity and initiatives of our Irish emigrants. The

sense of identity and community on which our games are based is so

strong among the expatriate community that there is still significant

potential for continued growth. I know that you will rise to the challenge

and ensure that the gospel of Gaelic Games continues to spread.

I want to express my appreciation to everyone, players, officials and

supporters in Munich, for the effort you put into the organisation of Gaelic

Games and the sacrifices you make year after year. I regret that I cannot

be with you this weekend to share in your wonderful occasion, but Iwould like to wish you all every success over the course of the weekend

    and for the future.

Go raibh maith agaibh go lr,

Cuirimuid Falte Roimh agus Wilkommen to the summer 2002 issue of

Munchen Colmcilles Newsletter. Mnchen Colmcilles is a Gaelic club that

was set up in March of 2001 to offer the large Irish community in Munich a

chance to get together to share their interests in playing Irish sports as wellas expressing their Irish culture within the Munich area. In little over a year

the club has grown slowly from approx 12 members to over 60. Wecurrently have approximately 50 playing members and have active mens

and Ladies team that compete in the European GAA League.

The club has both a mens and ladies team who will participate in 5 rounds

of the European League this season. Colmcilles have also played their first

hurling match against Ineoin Zurich, another newcomer to the Europeanscene. Having finished 3rd on a number of occasions so far, our bestperformance to date was at the last tournament in Brussels, losing to the

eventual winners by a single point . It is our hope today to win our first

    silverware on home turf.

+RZ0QFKHQ&ROPFLOOHVJRWLWVQDPH"Mnchen itself means little Monk named after the monks who

founded the city. Colmcille was one of Irelands famous Monks from the

sixth century AD. Colmcille himself, never visited Munich but spent his lifespreading the word of Christianity. Colmcilles GAA in Munich are

spreading the word about gaelic games.

7KHIXWXUHIRU&ROPFLOOHV*$$"We hope to help set up more GAA clubs in Germany with a view to

establishing a German GAA league. Similar efforts in the other regions (

France and Benelux) would see regional leagues and a European

championship. We would like to reduce the distance for games due to timeand financial reasons while increasing the number of games per year.

Parallel to this we hope to invite teams over from Ireland & the UK to play

games. Tougher competition will raise the standard of our games.

Our other goal is to initiate underage teams. A huge task perhaps but the

future of any game is in the youth. We are currently developing ourstructures and training programmes for youth with help of the GAA in

Ireland and new Coaching CDs for our games which document all of the

skills, strategies and training necessary to play Gaelic games.

Mnchen Colmcilles are delighted to announce Escador as their official

    club Sponsor for 2002. Escador is a cross-disciplinary e-Business

solutions provider who have offices in Germany, UK, Spain and the

Netherlands. Their German head office is based in the heart of

Munich next to the Rathaus at Marien Platz and is only 2 minutes

walking distance from Colmcilles other club sponsor, Kilians Irish Pub.

Guillermo Barea is the Manager of Escadors Munich office and he told

us how and why a company such as Escador got involved with a club

whose sport is almost unknown in Germany.

Well, the fact that our German office has five Irish employees was the

main reason that Escador got involved in the first place. Three of them

actually play for the club and when they told me that they had joined

an Irish football club in Munich I thought that they were talking about

Soccer. I was interested in joining them as I am a huge Real Madrid

supporter however It was not until I saw the Colmcilles website that I

realized that they had meant a totally different game.

They then showed me a video of some games and I really found it an

interesting, tough and fast game. I could also not believe that they

were willing to travel such vast distances to play in tournaments all

over Europe. I really admire their commitment and love for their game.

The guys used to keep me informed on how the club was developing

and it was very similar to what Escador had gone through in its

formative years. There was a lot of red tape that had to be dealt with

and having experienced this personally with Escador, I was always

able to give them some useful tips.

Paul Larkin, Chairman of Mnchen Colmcilles, then approached me in

relation to getting involved with the Club. He was seeking a Sponsor

so that they could raise some funds to further develop the club andhad suggested that Escador would be a good fit. I was very interested

as Escador employees were already involved on the playing side of

things and the fact that Colmcilles were competing all over Europe was

also a reason for us to get involved.

We also believed that it would be a cost effective and way to recruit

potential employees all over Europe and we have already seen some

return of investment in relation to this.

We were also very impressed with the professional attitude of the

people involved with the club and the fact that they have achieved so

much in such a short space of time is a reflection of their dedication

    and hard work.

We look forward to the coming season and wish the club all the

success both on and off the pitch that they deserve. We are delighted

to be able to be involved and support the first ever GAA tournament in

    Germany today.

    Yours sincerely,

    Guillermo Barea

They say, Ladies Football is the fastest growing sport in Europe. This is

certainly true and the level of competition in Ireland, at County and Inter-

county level is growing at an extraordinary rate.

As for the football in Europe for the girls, it is growing at a slower but

encouraging pace. For the last two years there have been three fine Ladies

football teams in Europe - Paris, Luxembourg and Brussels. They have been

working hard to get Ladies Football recognised here in Europe and theirefforts are complimentary.

Since Mnchen Colmcilles was founded in 2001, the club has been going

from strength to strength. The mens team have done the club and Munich

proud in all tournaments to date. My first tournament in Brussels 2001 was

when I was given the opportunity to participate in the ladies competition.

The boys had done well all day long especially it being their second ever

tournament but the day blew me away when I got to play my first ever game

of club football. From then on, I was smitten on playing Gaelic football.

2001 was the birth of Mnchen Colmcilles GAA club and of course the

mens football team but for me 2002 is the year for the girls.

Mnchen Colmcilles Christmas Dinner last year was where Ladies Football

was first mentioned. Maybe it was the great atmosphere, the aroma of

turkey and ham, or the more probable answer.the consumption of a wee

drink that made some daft young come out with such a statement in a

speech. This being that a Mnchen Colmcilles ladies football team was

going to be brought into the horizon for 2002.

Back in January at the European GAA Boards A.G.M. in Luxembourg, the

promise of a Ladies football team in Munich was yet again implied. This

would add a fourth team to Ladies football in Europe. The determinationwas there and of course the encouragement of the boys in Mnchen

Colmcilles made sure that we wouldnt give up in the crusade of getting a

team together. The pledge made for the ladies team at the Mnchen

Colmcilles AGM was that they would play 2 tournaments in 2002. Good

start, as there was only one female football playing member back then!!

From then on no girl in Munich was safe from being asked Would you

like to play football please???? followed by the propaganda of Itll be

great fun, you dont even have to have ever played before coz I never

did and of course therell be boys in shorts also training at the same

time. Well you know a girls got to say absolutely anything necessary to

    persuade someone into doing something.

A few more girls turned out to training before this tournament but

unfortunately due to holidays and work commitments only 3 of us headed

for Luxembourg. A great day was had by the Munich girls who played

    with Paris for the day.

With the new Escador sponsored ladies kit and two size 4 footballs gave

us the heart of believing that we could have a team together for Brussels.

With the new trainer, John Toal on board and the word finally getting

around , things were looking more positive. And with that Mnchen

Colmcilles first ever ladies football team accompanied the mens team to

Brussels. The girls, 8 in total, did themselves proud on the day of the

tournament in the Ladies 7 a side competition. The girls displayed the

characteristics of seasoned veterans with the true determination, courage,

hunger and pride in the wearing of the jersey, which every team should

    possess.

Special thanks to all those girls involved and made Mnchen Colmcille

history. These were Sinead Larkin, Deirdre N Dhea, Aine Twomey,

Eileen Quinnlan, Aoife Kennedy, Lisa Briscoe and Jean O Loughran.

These girls showed skill and also a sign of things better to come, from

    ladies football in Munich.

Recent recruitments both German and Irish are now playing with the

team. Therefore, the whole ladies team is looking forward to making a

bigger and better impact today on our home soil.

Ladies Football is slowly but surely making an impact in European GAA

and there are a few more potential ladies football teams that will start to

participate in the European league in the near future. The following clubs

have already competed - Rennes who won at their home tournament, Brest

(France) who have a few skilful players in the making and The Hague

(Netherlands) who also have a couple of players to break into the world of

European Gaelic football. With these additional teams, there could very

well be a European Ladies Football League in the not too distant future.

As for Mnchen Colmcilles Ladies Football team who started out in

February/March with three to four players can go only from strength to

strength with the commitment, sense of fun and love of a game.
