COLLIE CHAOS 2017 On Sunday 23rd April, 2017, we are holding the 3rd Collie Chaos event at

Carsington Water Visitor Centre, Derbyshire, DE6 1ST from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. These days are purely a fun day out with our dogs to raise money for Collie Res-

cue. We are asking for a £5 per family donation to attend, pay on arrival, where you will be given a raffle ticket for a prize draw which will take place around 3 p.m. You

CHARLIE is continuing to keep well, espe-

cially now that he is being given natural joint

support capsules and a pain relief tablet on a

daily basis. The vet recommended this when

Charlie was taken there over concerns that his

foster mum, Margaret had, that Charlie appeared

to be slowing up on his walks. A very noticeable

improvement in mobility and he actually seems

brighter in himself, obviously he is now a lot

more comfortable.

Here is a photo of him in one of his favourite

spots at home, taken last

autumn. He likes to sit and

look through the gate,

(probably for the post-

man!) He was facing the

opposite way when this

photo was taken, he turns

round if it gets a bit

windy!! At the moment

while it is so cold he is not

allowed to sit down there

for obvious reasons, so he

is a bit miffed about that. '

BONNIE-PRINCE is on

the look out for some bits that he appears to have lost !! See

his story on Page 6.

JENNY has been with us 12

months now and has settled in

really well, she's one of the family.

She enjoys the company of my two

other dogs, Hogan and Shelby and

she even gets on with the three cats

that also live with us. Jen gets lots

of fuss and attention and is a very

contented girl. She thoroughly en-

joys her walks too.

STANLEY is doing

very well for his age and is enjoying his life of luxury in Notting-hamshire. Although he would prefer to lounge around on the sofa all day, he does go out daily for walks, sporting a very smart coat when the weather is wet. He’s a happy-go-lucky, laid back boy who takes every-thing in his stride. He is on a joint supplement called YU-Move to help with any problems that may arise in the

future. He also thoroughly enjoys his food and treats.

TIA Not a lot has changed in the life of Tia

since last reporting on how she was getting on.

We are pleased to say that she remains in really

good health, with no trips to the vet for quite a

while - that's always the best news! She is also a

little bit more keen on

going out for a walk ...

but still continues to

be very temperamen-

tal! Lets hope that Tia

continues to be happy

and healthy for the

foreseeable future.

Since our last Newsletter and AGM, we wel-

come four new Committee Members, who for

many years have been helping re-home dogs with us. Paula and Trevor Cunliffe have been working hard for rescue in

the west country for over 20 years. Glen Hale, working behind the scenes helping wife Sam in Birmingham and Susie

James in Coventry who has been involved with collies for many years and oversees our Facebook page, along with An-

nette and Sam. The fun day at Carsington is seeming to be an annual event and I am hoping to meet a lot of you there on

the 23rd April. I would like to thank all the collie folk out there who have donated to bring over the unfortunate dogs from

abroad, who rescue does not fund, but we help with re-homing when they arrive over here. Your funds are not a bottom-

less pit, but you have saved the lives of some terribly sad cases from other countries - Phoenix and Reina from Bosnia

and Flossie from Southern Ireland to name a few. I am sure they are all now living happier and healthier lives because

of your generosity. Happy Easter and enjoy a wonderful summer with your special dogs. Chris Slater

Having picked up Cassie on the 2nd January 2016, she has now been

with us for just over a year. In this time we have had to take her to the vets for two operations. We knew when we picked her up that her front teeth needed to be sorted out and that she would have to be spayed. Her front teeth were too badly damaged to be saved and our vet had to remove all 12 of her front teeth, but

he managed to save her canines. The second trip was planned and all went well.

Cassie has blossomed over the year, going from being quite nervous, not wanting to leave the house, con-stantly being under our feet and only staying or sleeping in a few small spaces, to being friendly with al-most everyone, loving to go out for a walk, and spending time in her beds or sprawled out in a comfortable position wherever she wishes. She still prefers to be close to us, or between us if at all possible, and be

given as much love and affection as possible from us, or from those she now knows well.

Having just gone through a moult, her fur is now soft and glossy, her eyes sparkle, and she ‘smiles’ a lot. She is now also starting to play a little with other dogs she meets when out, but balls are still completely

alien to her.

We have had 4 Rough Collies from puppies over the years before adopting Cassie, and she has become an-other member of the family. We are looking forward to meeting as many of you and your Rough Collies once again at the 2017 Collie

Chaos on 23rd April See you there. David, Jayne, and Cassie

Meet cassie ... Another

rescue happy ending

SPONSOR DOG ... KARA unfortunately, we have had to say a sad farewell to Kara who passed away in November last year. As you all know she had some serious health problems

and eventually her kidneys gave out on her. She will be sadly missed by her owners,

Ollie, Bonnie and of course her

buddy, Jazz.

RIP sweetheart

Hi, Lassie Grace here. I have been with my

family for nearly three years - well they say time

flies when you’re having fun !! Mom says that I

have definitely came out of my shell. I love my

toys, just love being the boss. I also love my walks

each day, but my favourite thing is food, I just love

it and not forgetting my brother, Louie. I love him

too, but don't tell him, although to tell you the truth

I would not want to be without him xx

Hello, it’s Louie here to fill you in on what I

have been up to. I am going to be two years old in May. I am a good boy and mom says to me I have done wonders for Lassie Grace. My coat is coming on well, but I do not like to be groomed, mom calls me “sad sack” from the Raggy Dolls kids TV show, but now

I keep still and it is over in no time.xxx

Although Collie Rescue do not get involved with dogs from abroad or Southern Ireland un-til they are on these shores, there are sympathetic dog lovers out there who do help get these dogs to safety. Rescue can then step in to help with the re-homing. There have been numerous requests on Facebook for financial help to pay for travel, veterinary fees, vaccinations and Pet Passports when dogs have been found and rescued abroad and a big THANK YOU goes to all those who have contributed to our cause on more than one occasion through cash donations and organising raffles and tombola’s. Below are three stories of rescued dogs ... Phoenix and Reina (now known as Corby) who were found and

rescued in Bosnia, and Flossie, from Southern Ireland.

BEFORE SAVING PHOENIX Phoenix was found at deaths door by the side of the road in Sari-javo, Bosnia at the end of May, 2016 and was rescued just in time. She was taken to the vets for emergency treatment ... fluids, tick re-moval - over 80 ticks were removed from her frail body, and antibiot-ics. She was painfully thin and had been used for breeding and then

dumped !! She was thought to be 3 or 4 years of age.

She was moved to a boarding kennels (known as a Pension) and did very well. She had a “virtual adopter” here in England who paid all her vet bills and kennel charges until she was ready to come over to the U.K. to be re-homed by Collie Rescue (Rough and Smooth) UK . She eventually travelled to England in November, 2016 and was re-homed directly to her new family in Loughborough. Her story is

taken up here by Karon, who is Phoenix’s new mum.

I’d waited a long time for Phoenix, so much so that I was beginning to think I would have to give up on a rescued dog and look for a puppy. The prob-lem was I have 4 children, currently ranging from 6-13 and for obvious rea-sons many rescue dogs simple aren’t compatible with our family. Then I heard about Phoenix, and to be honest I didn’t dare hope she would be a good match. The fact that she was in another country just seemed as-

tounding to myself and my sons and everybody got a bit excited.

We arranged that she could come to us early November, bypassing the November 5th fireworks which she apparently was scared of. I was kindly sent the transport details for the truck she was on and this meant that I could follow her progress across Europe with GPS on board. This turned quickly from a bit of a joke into something that lots of people enjoyed, and I ended up posting regularly on Facebook with a description of where she was and a photograph from Google Maps of the area, if possible. I learned more about mainland Europe in those 24 hours than I ever did at school! If anybody in the future rescues a dog from an-other country I really recommend following their

travels.

My first impressions on meeting Phoenix were that she was scared but desperate to please. She wasn’t scared of people but was wary of the situation she was in, understandably. She walked into my house and was immediately scared of my laminate floor, a surface she is still wary of today, but trimming her pad fur and some paw wax have helped. She mostly stays in the back of the house which is tiled, near my

guinea pigs whom she adores.

AFTER

MY FIRST MEETING WITH PHOENIX ON HER ARRIVAL HERE

Page 5

We had a scary moment on the second day of ownership, as I had taken her for a walk and due to her reluc-tance to cross my laminate floor I’d left her standing on my doormat while I took my coat off and went to get her a dog treat to encourage her to cross the floor in her own time. At that moment my parents opened the front door and she bolted! I went out after her and calmly called her back (even though my heart was hammering! Annette had told me very clearly never to let her run out of the front door!), but she came straight back to me and at that

moment I knew everything was going to be okay.

She’s settled in well, taking to my children at first meeting. When they ran up to say hello, she wasn’t fazed at all, just calmly fetched her ball, dropped it at their feet and off they went playing happily as though they had known each other for ages. I can even let her off the lead for a run and she comes straight back, something I did not expect at all in a rescued dog. Whoever had her in Bosnia, looked after her well I think, she is house trained beautifully, lead

trained, and very responsive.

Of course it would not be fair to make out that she is some sort of angel of a dog (she is!) because she has dug a couple of holes in my garden, and she does insist on rolling on the grass every single time we go out for a walk (five times this morning, a new record!). She also likes to run about and then run straight at you and jump up, which we are currently working on to stop. She prefers to drink rain water any day than drink out of her water bowl. She also likes to stop and collect her pee mails every few metres if she can, and she likes to say hello to every single dog on a walk whether they want to or not. She is also convinced that squirrels are evil! She is the best be-haved of all the collies I’ve had, and I trained the previous two, so that’s saying something!

It feels like I’ve had her for ages, not just a few months, and I want to say a big thank you to Rescue for

matching us with our (nearly) perfect dog!”

Meeting corby

Corby, previously named Reina, travelled from

Bosnia with Phoenix. She was advertised on

their equivalent of our “Gumtree”, being offered

for sale at around 60 euro. A vet check found

she was in pretty good health, apart from some

damage to her lower tail which the vets ampu-

tated to stop infection from spreading and was

rather thin, so a good diet was organised for her

and she was placed in a boarding kennels to

await her vaccinations and Pet Passport ready for travel to the UK, which happened in November,

2016. Here is an update from the family who took her on.

Reina came over from Bosnia in November last year and joined our family. When she came she didn't have much weight on her and no fur on her tail due to part of it being amputated. She now has a lovely little tail with fur and has put weight on. We decided to change her name to Corby and she responded to this with ease. Corby loves her walks with our sons and loves playing with her toys . She sleeps on my sons bed.

She has come on so much since November, it's like she's always been here.

**********************************************************

FLOSSIE Flossie came over from Southern Ireland in August, 2016

after being financed by a lady called Lesley who is in-volved with most of the foreign dogs that come to this

country for re-homing. She was a surrender rather than a stray. The family had young children and were no longer

able to keep her although we never actually got the full story. The impression we got was the wife didn’t want her, but the husband did. Flossie was shy and un-socialised, but Liz, her new “mum”

has been great with her. She now lives in Exeter and accompanies Liz pretty much everywhere.

Page 6

Skoda is very well and enjoys his life, as does Tilly. They love going to the

beach every day but do sulk if the weather spoils or stops us getting out but

I guess I feel like that too. Skoda will be 9 in July but he is not showing any

signs of slowing down. His face is going very grey making him more distin-

guished looking. Tilly is 6, but thinks she is still a pup.

Tilly has had one year with us in March. Within this year she was spayed on

the 11th January and recovered very well not allowing a minor thing like

major surgery slow her or curb her desire to “run jump” or be a torment to Skoda. Her only issue on recov-

ery was her shaved leg, she would not leave it alone, made it look like raw liver at one point. Thankfully the

fur is now growing back well and she is no longer being a Diva.

Both dogs get on 99.9% of the time. They seem to love each other. Tilly would follow Skoda to the ends of

the world I think…. Skoda is more independent, so cannot be sure he would return the compliment.

The pair of them are “Collie hyper noise crazed” .. anything electrical sends them both off the radar into a

frenzy. So as long as we do not vacuum the house, put the dishwasher on, do not use the mixer or blender,

stop using the electric toothbrush and Steve does not use the electric razor, life is calm. We have learnt

strategies to overcome these issues! I am pleased to say both Skoda and Tilly seem very healthy and

happy and we are happy they are in our lives keeping us on our toes. Mary and Steve

LASSIE GRACE AND LOUIE Cont’d ..

Lassie

Grace

and

Louie

are very close and are always up to

mischief together. Louie is really

settled here now, is very close to

Lillie who he follows everywhere.

Each day he sits in the window up-

stairs looking out for her when she

is at school, although he does love

Brad equally the same. Our home

is very busy and loud but we

wouldn't want

it any other

way.

The Kerry

Family x

Bonnie-Prince has lost something very spe-cial to him, but he has now given up look-

ing, as life seems fine without them.

“It was the 26th September last year when I was taken to the vets for an operation ... What were they going to operate on ??? I don’t know because I was asleep ... But when I woke up I knew ... They had taken away my ....... testicles !!! I didn’t feel any pain and was quite comfortable lying in my small, snug kennel cage with the nurses coming up to me regularly, pat-ting my head and asking if I was alright. Well, yes I suppose I was alright, I felt alright, just a bit light headed but I had not inspected my operation site

yet, so I will let them know later !!!

Lying snug and warm, I suddenly heard a voice I recognised ... My mum ... Mum and dad were waiting for me and the nurse came and put my harness on and then this great big cone around my neck ... What was I supposed to do with this there, I kept bumping into things as I made my way to the wait-ing area to meet my humans. I kept shaking my head to try to get this thing off, but it would not move ... Oh joy !! No more running around the garden for me then !! We got home and my harness came off, BUT NOT THE CONE .. I was getting quite frustrated with this thing now and kept bumping into furniture and the door frame. Then mum came up with the idea of a T-shirt ... She took the cone off and then put my back legs into the armholes of the shirt, tail through the neck, pulled it up over my belly and tied it se-curely around my middle ... Well, at least I could walk around the house

now without hitting everything in sight.

I smelt chicken ... Oh yes, food was on it’s way. I was given chicken and rice which I ate with gusto ... I was starving ... then I settled down on my

bed and tried to inspect my back end, but all I could do was sniff, I couldn’t

Page 7

Hi, Tinky here, or should I say Miss Tyler?

Well it has certainly been pretty quiet round here during winter. I have met some of you for the oc-

casional walk, but it seems you humans aren't as keen on cold weather as we dogs are. Mum takes

us all out for walkies then complains that we are all so wet and dirty ... what's that all about?

In November we went to Carsington to meet Mary, Steve, Skoda and Tilly and some other dogs

joined us for the day. For the first time ever, it actually rained and we were all very wet and dirty,

but it was lovely meeting everyone and sniffing fresh butts! Then In November a Lady came all the

way over from Ireland to meet us all and she is hoping to come to Collie Chaos in April. She was

really nice and she brought loads of Irish cheese with her, it was very tasty, but I don't think it was

meant for myself, Asha and Poppy!

In January we went to Chatsworth Park and had a lovely sunny walk with Jed and Amber, our furry

friends and as we were walking back Mum suddenly told us all to

stand still and be quiet. I didn't know what was happening but it

sounded like hundreds of dogs running past us. I wanted to go and

run with them, but Mum told me I wasn't allowed as they were deer

belonging to the Duke Of Devonshire!

I’ve only had to go to the vets once in the last 6 months, yes, my ears again! Luckily antibiotics

and painkillers cleared them up and I didn't have to go back to Annette the Neurologist.

I am doing well training Poppy and she will soon be qualified to train our humans in how to get

what she wants, when she wants it!

Mum finished writing her 3rd book for Rescue, Buddy's Legacy and I wish I could read it myself to

see what tales she shares with everyone about me, Asha and Poppy!

Mum tells me she is planning another Collie Chaos at Carsington in April and I can’t wait to meet

so many more new friends to play with and sniff their butts! Hopefully the rain and mud will have

disappeared by then. I'm hoping to see many of you there to help raise money for Collie Rescue.

Drive safely and we will see you all soon xx

UPDATE ON STORM ... THE DOG WHO LOVES HY-

DRO-THERAPY

In the last edition of Paws for Thought we wrote an

article about rescue collie, Storm, and his course of

hydro-therapy, aimed at easing his arthritis. We are

pleased to tell you that he managed to successfully

finish a course of 10 sessions. The swimming therapy certainly seemed to help

his mobility and he is going to embark on another course as soon as the

weather warms up a bit, probably April or May time to make sure he is mobile

and can enjoy the summertime in comfort.

BONNIE-PRINCE AND HIS MISSING BITS Cont’d from Page 6 ...

lick because the T-shirt was in the way. What would I do when I wanted to go out to have a pee ?? But mum solved that by taking the T-shirt off and following me around the garden until I had done what I had to do, then the shirt went straight back on before I could get anywhere near my

back end to inspect the damage.

The only good thing to come out of all this was the food ... Chicken and rice for days, then a few crunchies added until I was back on my normal

diet.

The day the stitches came out was a great relief ... I was free of human clothes and could inspect myself thoroughly, but there was nothing really to inspect by now, the area had healed well and after a few days life got back to nor-mal and I can’t say I feel any different, even though I am missing a vital part of

my anatomy.

LIFE IS GOOD AGAIN xx”

When we first arrived at our new home we visited the vets to have our injections and get checked over and we both needed to gain some weight. This hasn’t been a problem and now mum says we are like little dumplings. I have gained 6 kilos which is fine. Mum says she’s glad she hasn’t gained

six !!

In May, Mum and Dad decided to take us on holiday, but weren’t sure how we would travel a long distance, so we went to Lindisfarne. This would have been wonderful, but unfortunately on the first day I went lame and had to be taken to the vets at Berwick. The vet said I must rest so we didn’t get to run on those beautiful beaches. When we got home my paw wasn’t any better so I had to have an operation on it. I

was very brave and it’s all healed now.

When we first came to live here we didn’t really know how to play, but now we love to run and play fight in the garden. We love our walks on the moors twice a day. We were given lots of toys. I quite like them, but Lucky adores them and his fa-

vourite at the moment is a pink pig.

In June we went to Carsington Water, in Derbyshire, for Collie Chaos and it was fantastic

meeting all our collie friends.

Because we have been such good boys and travelled well in the car, Mum and Dad decided to take us to Cornwall for another holiday. We still don’t like doggie biscuits and treats, but in Padstow Mum found a shop that sold liver cake and it was delicious, so she makes it all the time for us now. We also got to have some of Dad’s Cornish cream tea. Lucky is greedy, but I

am patient.

We have been back to Carsington three times since Collie Chaos and we walked all-round the lake. We can’t wait for the next one

in April.

We went back to Cornwall in October and January and we have been told that we are going back at least twice this year. We love running on the beach, but we don’t like going in the

sea.

We really have landed on our paws. Thank you Sam and

Rescue for letting us come to live here.
