based upon their weighted grades. Students will be honored according to the following designations based on their cumulative GPA’s after the seventh semester.

• Honors GPA• Summa Cum Laude 3.8 and above• Magna Cum Laude 3.40-3.7• Cum Laude 3.0-3.3

• Register on-line for the ACT/SAT tests (dates included) paper applications available in guidance.

• Start thinking and narrowing post secondary education options

• Begin visiting colleges if you haven’t already. Plan a visit

• If necessary, obtain a letter of recommendation for your school counselor (form included). Remember to give no less than 2 weeks prior notice for a letter.

• Check college application deadlines• Begin your resume if you plan to begin working after

graduation• If you are interested in entering a branch of the

military, plan to take the ASVAB• Register and/or take the SAT/ACT remember you can

take these tests more than once

• Finish application and send BEFORE winter break

• Begin the process for applying for your FAFSA pin and both the PROMISE scholarship and WV Higher Education Grant (CFWV.com)

• Research possible scholarship opportunities in the JHS Scholarship Directory and in the community.

• Visit with military recruiters to discuss military job options

• File FAFSA after January 1st but no later than January 31st.

• Apply for PROMISE and WV Higher Ed Grant

• Compose essay for scholarship opportunities.

February-March

• Continue to search for college money. • Complete and submit all scholarship applications• Check JHS guidance webpage for updated information

regarding open houses, school visits, job and scholarship opportunities.

• NOTE ALL DEADLINES!!!! DON’T MISS AN OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE OF A DEADLINE!

• Remember, lack of planning on your part does not equal an emergency for anyone else

• When/if you are accepted and decide which school you will attend, remember to let your school counselor know and Mrs. Beahm so final transcripts can be sent to the right school. Additionally, let other schools you applied for know that you will not be attending.

April-June

• Mail your acceptance of Federal Aid to the college of our choice

• Complete final transcript request• Submit a list of scholarships to the Guidance

Department by May 1st. This information will be used to recognize your accomplishment at the Awards Assembly.

• Begin to set up job interviews and appointments if you plan to start work

• Contact your recruiter to address dates and times of basic training or officer school if you plan to join the military.

Financial Aid

• If you are thinking of continuing your education after high school whether it is at a four year school, two year school or vocational/technical school, you should know about financial aid.

• Jefferson High School hosts a Financial Aid Night each year to help students and parents learn “all there is to know” about applying for accepting, and do’s and don’ts of financial aid.  

• Financial Aid comes in a variety of forms. • Aid typically comes in a “package” or a combination of different

kinds of assistance. For most kinds of financial aid, student must be enrolled at least half-time and show that they are making satisfactory progress in their program of study. Some student aid programs have special requirements and guidelines.

• The Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application required for federal, state and college-based aid. The applications must be filed after January 1st of the senior year.

Military Career Options

• Students interested in enlisting after graduation should plan to visit the recruiters and to take the military entrance exam Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB).

• The ASVAB is given twice each year at Jefferson High School. This test is a great tool for students to determine strengths and weaknesses in ten different categories.
