KCDC Research Competition: Year 13 student, Kata Brown, has won the senior section of the KCDC Kāpiti Remembers research competition. Kata's film focuses on one of her Croatian ancestors. “The judging panel was highly impressed by the quality of the Kāpiti Remembers Research Competition entries – they were thoughtful, moving and beautiful pieces of work, honouring a significant chapter of New Zealand and world history. We were at times reduced to tears by the emotion conveyed in the entries, and express our gratitude to the entrants for taking such care and consideration in preparing their works. We were delighted also to be able to offer multi-format options for competition entries, and look forward to seeing more creative works from these talented entrants in the coming future.”

Congratulations and well done Kata.

The College Uniform shop will be open for one session during the next school holidays.

Eco Action Group:

Members of the Eco Action Group have been busy this week, with two trips to Parliament to support student-led environmental actions. On Monday afternoon, fourteen of us walked and trained into Wellington to support a Wellington Girls-led protest about the budget allocation for Climate Change. For many, it was the first civic action we'd ever taken. We agree with the organisers that $1 million per year for the next four years is inadequate in terms of meeting our commitments to reduce carbon emissions, as part of the Paris Climate Accord. The speeches were well-researched and delivered in a really inspiring way, by Shannon from Wellington Girls, Victor from Generation Zero, and Gareth Hughes, Green Party M.P. Although most of us are too young to vote in this year's election, it felt great realising we can take part in our democracy through peaceful protest and petitioning our political leaders. It created a lot of discussion around the dinner table(s) and our banner and placards looked great! If you would like to sign a 'Zero Carbon Act' petition and the 'Our Carbon Declaration', click on these links: https://zerocarbonact.nz/signon/ http://www.ourclimatedeclaration.org.nz/?recruiter_id=4154

Dunedin South M.P. Clare Curran with Carisbrook and Paremata pupils... Kata, Mella and Miriam are behind our banner - are they hiding, or just putting Planet Earth out in front?!

The next visit was on Wednesday, when Eco Action Group members Mella McCormack-Wolf, Kata Brown and Miriam Bright joined Enviroschools facilitator, Amanda Dobson, and a large number of children from Paremata School in supporting a petition delivered by pupils from Carisbrook School (Dunedin). Two Year 8 girls collected about 4000 signatures asking the government to ban single-use plastic bags, which might be useful but don't break down easily (if ever) in the environment and are hazardous to wildlife. Students and staff at Kāpiti College had signed the petition, which will be presented at a Select Committee sometime next year. It's been an exciting and educational week for our young people who are passionate about making positive change for the planet.

Performing Arts/Cultural Events: KC Concert Orchestra :

The Kapiti College Concert Orchestra hit a high note this week with their tour of Waikanae Retirement Villages. Their programme was an eclectic mix of music from the Baroque through to a sultry Argentinian Tango by Astor Piazzola. A highlight of the programme was a performance of a little-known viola concerto by Hoffmeister. The soloist was our versatile Concert Master Zephyr Wills playing not violin but viola - and premiering a virtuosic cadenza that he had composed himself. Changing instruments is no mean feat, especially considering that he is a member of the Bedriska Trio which recently progressed through to the National Semi Finals of the Chamber music contest. The residents at the various villages were blown away by the quality of the performances and an enjoyable experience was had by all.

The overall student winner was Chloe’s group with their “Titanic” song.

Teachers are already planning their songs for next year which is a sign for a great competition for 2018! Thank you for all of those who were behind scenes and everyone that came to watch.
