Located in NDT District VII, Pittsburgh is in close proximity to the most well-attended novice tournaments in the nation, and thus can offer a challenging schedule to the beginning intercollegiate debater. In addition to these intercollegiate tournament debating opportunities, students in the WPDU can work toward the goal of international travel in parliamentary competition. Because extensive debate travel can be time-intensive, all members of the WPDU carrying a full travel schedule are required to maintain a 3.0 grade-point average and are required to effectively balance course work and debate obligations. The Union is not just an academic center for debate and discussion; it embraces the challenge of serving as a catalyst of constructive public dialogue outside the walls of the university as well. To this end, the team develops and implements"idea-logical"initiatives, designed to free up space for wide-open public discussion through the sponsoring of public debates, the application of political and media pressure for increased institutional transparency, and the stimulation of dialogue on pressing issues facing local, regional, and national communities. Interested students have the opportunity of focusing on these projects by investing their energy in the Activist Debate Network (ADN), the branch of the Union devoted to this task of bolstering public dialogue. The mission of ADN is to go beyond traditional debate pedagogy to emphasize debatersU roles as actors in and beyond contest rounds, and aim to make debate practice more relevant in the public sphere. The aim is to build up experience and develop expertise in public advocacy; to refine and amplify the public voices of students, and bring students into public conversations with interlocutors inside and outside the university. ADN activities are designed to maximize participation, and the ADN tends to draw students who have other obligations that prevent them from traveling on long weekends and have limited previous debate experience. The Union's debating activities spill over national boundaries. In December, 1996, the team traveled to Cork, Ireland for the World Debating Championships. The Union regularly hosts foreign national teams on their debating tours of the United States, having recently entertained the British national team in both 1994 and 1995. In previous years, the WPDU has served as host to the Russian, Irish, and Australian national teams. These initiatives build on a long tradition of internatioal debating at Pitt, started with Director Robert Newman's remarkable exchange series with the University of West Indies in the 1950s and 60s. In addition to these direct efforts, the WPDU also encourages its members to apply for international tours organized by the Speech Communication Association's Committee on International Discussion and Debate.
