Waterjet cuttingWaterjet cutting is a machining process. Hydraulic pressure intensifiers or mechanical high-pressure pumps bring the water
to a pressure of more than 5000 bar. This water jet does the cutting. Here, it can move several times faster than the speed of
sound. Bystronic offers two procedures: pure water cutting and cutting with abrasive.
Many applications in all industries
A waterjet cutting machine cuts any material that is softer
than the cutting medium – even bullet resistant glass and
marble. The procedure is also flexible with respect to mate-
rial thickness: it can cut 0.01 millimeter-thin plastic films and
20-centimeter-thick titanium plates. Thanks to this versatility,
users can make nearly anything, from the smallest precision
parts for fine mechanics to 16 meter-long components for steel
construction. Whether for aerospace or vehicle manufacturing,
machine construction, the food industry, glass processing or
medical engineering – parts cut with water are used in all of
these areas.

Cutting with abrasive
A waterjet cutting machine also processes hard materials such
as metals, stone, glass, and ceramics. For this, the water jet
must be mixed with a cutting medium (abrasive) – for example,
garnet sand. With this procedure, the abrasive is the separating
tool. The water jet serves to speed up the abrasive particles.
Waterjet cutting with abrasive is comparable to microchipping.
Pure water cutting
With pure water cutting, the water is the separating tool. It is
especially easy to cut soft materials with this procedure, includ-
ing paper products, sealing materials, plastics, foams, textiles,
and food. Pure water cutting is extremely precise: the water jet
can be finer than 0.1 millimeter and it allows the cutting of fine
contours, sharp angles, and tight radii.

Handle material gently and utilize it as well as possible
Waterjet cutting spares the material, for the workpiece is not subjected to any thermal and to
only slight mechanical loads. The material is thus utilized optimally. Therefore, this procedure
enables users to create prototypes and small series profitably and with high quality.
20-millimeter mild steel, cut with the water jet with abrasive. No heat is transferred to the material. The cut edges are nearly perfect.
High material loss with milling. With waterjet cutting, the parts can be nested, which reduces costs enormously. In addition, the time to the finished part with waterjet cutting is shorter than with milling.
