• Questions to students to open project:

• What do you see? List items?• What period of time do the objects

belong to? • Why?• What profession do you think these

objects might represent ? This is a close-up of an art work.• What do you think it might be?

Page 5: Collage project evaluation

Questions to students :

• Do you like this art work?• What is it that you like about it?• What about the title, does it suit the

finished piece?• If you had this collection of junk and

had to complete this work how might you approach it?

• Is colour important?• Where?

Page 6: Collage project evaluation

• Continued:

• Is texture important?• How do you think the artist went

about making this art work?• What other materials could be used

to make an art work like this?• Is the background important?• How does the artist make a

difference between the background and the portrait?

Task for Students: Create a Portrait using

Collage.

1.Make an observational drawing of self using line.

2.Break the form/structure of the head/face into shapes of tone.

3.Use collage to describe shapes of tone using colour and textures of papers.

Support Studies:Outline drawingCollage of tones.

• Students began working on outline drawings of self, looking at proportions and shapes of features of the face.

• We had a discussion about proportions and how to make them stronger.

• Questions asked:• Select a work where good proportions are

visible? (student A/B)• Ask student A/B what helped you to layout the

proportions of the face, could you make a suggestion to others?

• Who described the whole outline of the face quickly like in the demonstration?

• Did this help?• Who did not use the suggested approach?

Samples of outline drawings before tone using collage was applied:

Page 14: Collage project evaluation
Page 15: Collage project evaluation

• Students began to fill their outlines in order to describe the tonal qualities of the face.

• Some students mapped in the large blocks of colour first, while others broke up the areas as they worked.

Page 16: Collage project evaluation
Page 17: Collage project evaluation

• Students had freedom to choose whether to use realistic colours and textures or to be more creative.

• Students also had freedom to choose a real or imaginative background.

Page 18: Collage project evaluation

QUESTIONS:• Which of these three works have described the tonal

qualities of the face best?• What could help improve the work on the right?• Did anyone have problems describing the texture of the

hair?• How did you solve this problem?

Page 19: Collage project evaluation

These are two good, yet very different approaches as to how to break the face into tones using colour and texture. Which one do you feel works best? Why?

• What is the most difficult part of this project?• Did anyone else have this problem?

Most useful questions:Objectives:

• Observe and document facial proportions using line and shape.

• To observe the shapes of tone on the face.

• To describe the tonal qualities of the face using colour and texture using collage.

• To design and plan a suitable background that incorporates hobbies/interests in final composition.

Final evaluation questions:• What did you find to be the most

difficult part of this project?• Did you enjoy describing this

drawing using coloured papers?• What other materials could have

been used to make these finished pieces?

• What advice would you give to a student starting a collage project?

• What would you do different if you had to start this composition again?

• If these works had another life what could they be used for?

• Could these be used in adverting?• If so how?
