DISTRICT NEWSLETTER

NEXT EDITION January 2014

COPY DEADLINE : 20 December 2013

Colin’s Conversation Hello again and welcome to this edition of

the District Newsletter.

Christmas is approaching and this is a

great time of the year, allowing us all time

to relax for a while, spend time with family

and friends and recharge ready for the

new year. We should also remember those

less fortunate and also many who have

suffered in the recent fires in the eastern

states and the Typhoon in the Philippines.

Lions international is helping out, as well

as the contributions from many Lions clubs

around Australia and the world, through

contributions to The Australian Lions

Foundation and Lions Clubs International

Foundation.

It is also a good time to catch up with

friends that you may not have seen for a

while and check to see that they are well

as this time can also be a trying time for

those that have lost partners or family.

I have been continuing my club visits in the

district and it is good to see the variety of

projects carried out by the clubs in answer

to the needs of their communities. Anoth-

er good thing I have seen on my travels is

that a number of country areas have had a

good harvest this year after a few ordinary

years previously. This will put a smile back

into these areas and help the community

members, many of whom are our fellow

Lions.

On my visits I have also had the opportuni-

ty to induct many new members into a

number of clubs. Welcome to Lions and I

wish you a long and happy time with us. I

have also had the occasion to farewell

some of our long serving members. My

sympathy to family and friends. Thanks for

your service.

I would also like to congratulate the new-

est members of the WA Lions Hall of

Fame. Congratulations on the honor and

the acknowledgement by your peers of

your dedicated service

Morley Lions club celebrated fifty years of

service to the community in November

and a celebration Lunch took place. A

good time was had by all and the efforts of

many worthy Lions members were

acknowledged on the day. Well done Pres-

ident Les and Members.

As we head into this holiday period we

should remember that some important

projects and events are coming up in the

new year. Youth of The Year, Children of

Courage and March Membership month

are some of the projects that should be

planned now to enable your clubs to make

best use of these events to get out in your

communities and also to involve your

members .

A short note at the end of my message

regarding club payments. There have been

occasions where clubs have sent payments

directly to Lions head office in America.

Banks in America will not process foreign

currency cheques and the cheques are

mailed back. This causes delays and prob-

lems with a clubs financial standing. All

payments of dues, both district and Inter-

national, should be sent to the cabinet

treasurer. Payments for appeals (ALF,LCIF

etc) should also go to the cabinet treasur-

er, with the cheque made out to the par-

ticular fund or appeal. If you have any que-

ries, a quick call to the cabinet treasurer

will sort it out.

In closing, I would like to wish you all a

safe and happy Christmas and new year

and as usual, ”Follow Your Dream” while

THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF YOUTH WE SERVE DECEMBER 2013

DG Colin Presents James D Richardson

Award to Clive Brown

Page 2: Colin's Conversation - Lions District 201W1

Our little club has had a fantastic year.

In November 2012 PDG Barry inducted

M Eddie Mbunsu, a 28 year old refugee

from the Congo who arrived here at age

20 with a critical health problem , spoke

Swahili & French but no English! Today

he holds down a responsible Govern-

ment job, is married to Sandra from the

Congo, has 2 beautiful little aussie

daughters ( who tease him by saying,

we’re aussies daddy, but you aren’t !)

and a baby due in January 2014. When

I interviewed Eddie about why he want-

ed to be a lion, he replied. ‘ I want to

give something back to this country

that has been so kind to me and given

me so much. He has been true to his

word, being very active in our projects,

regardless of the demands on such a

young man with a young and expanding

family.

Additionally Eddie hoped to help his

Congolese people, with the result that

we, with the enormous help of Murray

Fletcher from City of Perth (Host) club,

recently shipped 150 computers with

monitors to the Congo, plus clothing,

rice, TV’s & cooking oil. Eddie sent his

mother a newspaper picture of himself

being introduced to Prime Minister Kev-

in Rudd, (sorry I couldn’t put this in due

to quality—Ed.) at the lead up to the

recent federal election. Pretty impres-

sive for a poor boy from the Congo!

More recently, young Ian Barlow was

inducted into our club by DG Colin. Ian

is the grandson of our deceased Lions

Ted & Rosemary Barlow, and has been

active with our club projects since age

11. Ian truly wanted to become a Lion.

His journey through his teen years has

been an extraordinary challenge, and

he has shown true courage, as well as

being led by the principals & ethics of

Lions that he maintains on a daily ba-

sis. He too was introduced to pm Kevin

Rudd, as well as defence minister Ste-

phen Smith.

It is our hope that the inclusion of both

Eddie & Ian will be the nucleus of re-

building our club with the next genera-

tion.

DG Colin had a busy night as we also

transferred lion John Klein, a Lion of 42

years standing, & a Melvin Jones fellow,

back into our club. John was a charter

member of Bassendean, and came to

help us get established, then after a few

years, returned to his Kalamunda club,

we need help again, and he has re-

turned. Also on this night lion Sylvia

Morgan was awarded a James D Rich-

ardson, and lion Ted Lawrence

(president) a Melvin Jones award. Our

hard working secretary Clive Brown was

overseas, but DG Colin caught up with

him at the Morley lions 50th anniver-

sary, 17/11/13, and presented Clive

with a much deserved James D Richard-

son award

Our hard working little club again in-

creased our Christmas cake sales; con-

tinued to build a solid relationship with

new club, Maylands; made donations in

excess of $12,500 for the financial year;

continues our journey towards creating

a men’s shed in Bassendean; and is cur-

rently rebuilding a bbq trailer for sau-

sage sizzles.

We’re off to a flying start with Christ-

mas cake season. The new fruit cake

slice is an absolute winner for us, the

public love it, and we must commend

the lions cake committee & George

Weston foods for this innovative and

profitable item and the fantastic lions

advertising on the display cartons. We

can only suggest to other clubs to seri-

ously embrace this winner.

Kind regards, Ted Lawrence & mem-

bers of Bassendean lions club

One hundred and eighty five children participated in this years Peace Poster competition. It is a tough competition which brings out the best in students imagination. This years theme was ‘Our World Our Future’ and was won by Grace Liu from Yaluma Primary School, sponsored by Scarborough Lions Club. Grace writes: The children are our fu-ture. They will put love into the world and throw away the wars. They can make a peaceful and wonderful future.

OCTOBER—NOVEMBER

W1 2013-2014 PEACE POSTER CONTEST WINNING ENTRY

HAVE A GO DAY

The Lions were out in full force at Burswood's Have A Go Day. There were booths to wander in and around containing loads of health i n f o r m a t i o n . The Lions hearing bus , Dryandra nature village , Lions Christmas cakes, Save Sight and a heavenly smelling sausage sizzle , just to n a m e a f e w . It was a beautiful day at a beautiful venue with the river in the back-ground and music provided by an excellent sound system and several sources including bagpipes and a t roop o f squ a re danc e rs . There was a mock mountain climb and teams going head to head in a battle of yard ball , (with a stop by the ice cream tent for the winners!). If you didn't make it to Burswood's Have a Go Day this year, be sure to mark it on your calendar for next year. It's a great day out and did I mention easy parking with shuttle service from your car to the event

and back!

Page 4: Colin's Conversation - Lions District 201W1

We Hear That Allan is Now a Lifer... At the recent Lions Hearing Foundation AGM, we were say-ing goodbye to 1st DG Elect Allan Cooper (W2) who has been our Treasurer for the past ten years. Although he has re-signed as Treasurer, he will be a Board Director from July 2014 in his DG position so we will not be losing his expertise altogether.

Allan has been very instrumental in getting the grants for the new bus and the Rimbus loan repayment organised which both took a lot of time and effort. The Board have been grateful for all his input over the years and he will be missed by all the members.

The photograph shows Chairman Lion Chris Smelt together with Director Lion Lorna Dodd presenting Allan with a Life Membership of the Lions Hearing Foundation.

Saturday 16th November saw the Dalwallinu and Dis-

trict Lions roll up their sleeves and get busy with their

community work. Not only did they hold their market

day with a record number of stalls and their famous

sausage sizzle, but organised for the Lions Cancer In-

stitute Mobile Screening Van to attend. Later that after-

noon they also had the ‘Maiden Voyage Launching’ of

their refurbished Dalwallinu Lions Driver Reviver Van

providing refreshments to competitors in the Pit area at

the local Pithara Speedway.

Such a hectic day , especially the women of the club;

being Harvest season.

Mobile Screening Unit.

The original Mobile Screening Unit was launched in Au-

gust 2005. The free screenings are carried out by Insti-

tute Staff, who are all volunteers.

From your Global Leadership Team

It was a scorcher out at the Swan View Show but the Lions braved the heat right along with the show goers.

The Ballajura Lions had their prize wheel in full swing and gave out some great prizes to the lucky winners.

Sue McDonald found herself a buddy wandering down the lane and managed a quick pic with her feathery friend.

MORLEY LIONS ANNIVERSARY

On Wednesday 14th November 2013 Morley Lions

Club reached the 50th Anniversary of the Formation

of the Club, and on Sunday 17th November held a

Special luncheon at the Wellington Room, Morley

Sports & Recreation Club, Morley with 70 invited

Guests including our District Governor Colin Heap,

District Governor W2 Alan Hawkins and Lion Bever-

ley Hawkins, Ian Britza MLA Member for Morley,

Lisa Baker MLA Member for Maylands, Mayor Syl-

van Albert City of

Bayswater, Ian Bresland President Morley Rotary

and Glen Cookson, Principal Weld Square Primary

School Morley.

In addition we had Special Guests – 3 former Club

Presidents, Oliver (Blue) Lovell, Theo Oud, and Eric

Dyer and Shirley Lemish, widow of PDG Morrie

Lemish and Jean Finkelstein, widow of Lion Frank

Finkelstein, Cathy Fisher and Andrew Fisher

(daughter & grandson of PDG Harry & Joan Snell).

Not to take away from all our other Guests includ-

ing Lions partners and Lions representing 16 other

Lions Clubs, some of whom had traveled considera-

ble distance, and we greatly appreciated everyone

coming along to help us celebrate such a milestone

event.

We were fortunate in our choice of Master of Cere-

monies, Lion Clive Brown (Bassendean) and he did a

tremendous job for us keeping the proceedings go-

ing and injecting some humor, he warned that

speech makers, who went over the maximum 5

minutes as requested, faced a scenario of ground

opening and disappearing apparently.

Lion Clive was himself in for a big “surprise” when

District Governor Colin Heap presented him with a

James D Richardson Award from his own Club, Bas-

sendean, with the collusion of Morley Lions Club,

since he had not been present when the DG visited

his Club recently.

The food from Nancy’s Catering was excellent and

good quantity, although some sweet tooth’s said

there could have been more dessert. In addition

Page 7: Colin's Conversation - Lions District 201W1

the DG cut our 50th Anniversary Cake (4 Lions

Cakes iced together) and this with tea/coffee

was available to round off the meal. There was

also red and white wine – with Morley Lions

Club label, 2 types of beer, soft drinks, orange

juice and water.

The Raffle was a highlight and there were some 32 prizes donated. Table 7 was a bit of a worry; they threatened in-surrection if they didn’t get a prize, and then proceeded to win quite a few prizes.

Each Guest received a copy of Morley Lions Club’s Special 50th Anniversary Publication which proudly covers our Club History, past, present and future.

There were also several tables of Memorabilia on display and the room had been decorated with Lions Banners and other Lions Display Signs including the W1 District Self Standing Banner & the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Banner.

District Governor Colin Heap presented 3 Awards to Morley Lions Club Members, a Life Membership for Lion Theo Sy-mons, our only remaining Charter Member, (absent) a Bar-ry J Palmer Award (Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Award) to President Les Truman, and a James D Richardson Award to Lion Malcolm Silver.

He also presented 20yr tabs to Lions Barbara Chapman, Val Lupton, and Lois Stockbridge, 15yr tab to Lion Malcolm Sil-ver, and 10yr tab to Lion Aaron Stockbridge.

It was a happy atmosphere and further lightened by the Tail Twisting session in which our Tail Twister Peter was able to watch a master at work – specially invited Gordon Chivers.

It only remained for MC Lion Clive Brown to thank everyone for attending, for contributing to the success and a special mention of all those Non Lions, some of them family, who assist the Lions all year, including donating goods for our flea market stall and selling Christmas cakes, donating raffle prizes and in so many other ways and thanks to Nancy’s
