Thanks to Sheila Parker I am writing this from a Carer’s perspective and want to give thanks to Sheila for her hard work and dedication on our behalf. She was always very aware of Carers’ issues and worked tirelessly to achieve the very best for us. She had input into Wiltshire Carers Involvement Group when necessary, taking issues forward to Wiltshire Carers Action Group which is at a higher strategic level. She chaired these particular meetings and will be greatly missed in that role. I want to thank her personally for her help in supporting me to take a Carer’s concern up to Government level as well. Thank you Sheila – we miss you!

1st Colerne Sea Scout Group An Exciting New Opportunity We are currently seeking a new Cub Scout Leader (Akela). Unfortunately our present leader is moving away from the area. The Cub Scouts (aged 8 to 10½ ) are the link

between the Beaver Section and Scout Section. We have two assistant leaders who will be staying on but we need a new Akela to lead this thriving group of boys and girls. Full support and training will be given to anyone willing to step into these shoes. Think how good this would look on your CV. The Cub Scout section currently meets on Thursday evenings between 6.00 and 7.30pm. If you think you could take on this role, please step forward now and contact Jackie Bicknell, Group Scout Leader, on 07880 764900 for more information. We do not want to see the Scout Group fold in Colerne.

Since April, the Neighbourhood Planning Group has been busy. We post all our minutes and formal documents on the website so you can see what we are up to. We launched our first consultation process at the May Fair, and since then have had four meetings where you were able to come and share your hopes and fears for the future, and begin the process of creating a ‘Colerne Approach’ to planning developments for the future. A big ‘thank you’ to all of you who managed to join us for this process. We were present at Armed Forces Day and at Jumping Jacks in order to get some feedback from younger families with children. We will be in a position to publish these first ideas after our final meeting with representatives of Clubs and Societies when we plan to explore ideas in more detail. Meanwhile, we still need you to keep discussing the future development needs and limits with your friends and neighbours. We suggested you explore questions such as “what sort of life do you want for you and your children in ten years?” “How can we improve opportunities for working together?” “How can we build in environmental protection and sustainable resources?” These are still relevant and we keep returning to them as a baseline. Unfortunately we are still awaiting the full consultation and approval process for our Application for Designated Area. We have submitted an application to include the whole Parish, a map of which appears on the website. The area includes the airfield and the Camp. However, at present the Neighbourhood Plan Group has no more information regarding the closure plans than anyone else in the Parish. With the election processes out of the way we are endeavouring to ensure that we are party to discussions with the MOD estate managers. What next? We recognise that some people were unable to make the times of the four consultation meetings, and we have taken on board the need to vary days and times for future meetings. By September/October, we hope to have our Designated Area approved and have moved on to some Future Visualisation Workshops, hopefully with input from UWE Planning Department. This will be a way to involve our younger members of the Parish, something we are keen to do. We will also be organising another Housing Needs Survey to up-date our understanding of real needs and demands for housing over the next 10 years. This is a formal document and we really hope you will all give us this important feedback by returning the forms. We hope to recruit local ‘ambassadors’ for each bit of the Parish, to encourage this process. If you would like to be involved, please let me know. Based on the ideas from the first consultation we will be setting up some research groups to collect evidence and explore possibilities. Once these are agreed we will post details of the groups on the website. It may be that you have particular skills or are aware of areas of information pertinent to these groups. Please do make contact with us if you could contribute in some way. Jane Mellett, Neighbourhood Plan Group

Grounds for Optimism – Chapter I 1.00am GMT +2, Thursday, 4th February 2016, Kigali International Airport, Rwanda. After a gap of 46 years a lot had changed. In 1970 I arrived via Uganda on a 175cc Honda trail-bike on dirt roads. On school holiday from a science teaching job on the shores of Lake Victoria in N-W Tanzania, I had been piqued by a Rwandan refugee pupil telling me of his home, ‘the land of a thousand hills’. Last year my arrival was by jet from Istanbul, touching down in the middle of the night close to my destination in S-W Uganda. The plane let a few of us off, before flying on to Entebbe. For hours over the Egyptian/Sudanese desert there had not been the tiniest pin-prick of light. Now the journey had dropped me in one of the most densely populated parts of Africa ablaze with myriad LED lamps powered by solar panels. The modern world had arrived. In half a century, Kigali has grown tenfold to a city of a million souls. Luxury hotels and futuristic buildings, like Bill Gates’ conference centre, gleam in the sun. Smooth pot-hole free tar-sealed roads have been laid. In 1970 Rwanda was an edgy country, not too welcoming to a single white man on two wheels. The country then was desperately poor, a bicycle being a rarity. Sick relatives were carried to hospital shoulder-high on wicker stretchers. In a letter to my mother from that era I mention a Rwandan refugee camp near my school in Tanzania so the 1994 genocide was far from the first atrocity. Trouble had been brewing for decades. What a joy then to find that the current 2015 Bradt travel guide does not exaggerate in describing a peaceful, prosperous country. Delicious coffee is a major source of that wealth. Altitude, sunshine and rich volcanic soils of the Western arm of the Rift Valley system are just what the bushes like. Last year, immigration formalities over, I dozed in an easy chair at the airport’s Bourbon Café and waited for the sunrise. At 6.00am Lilian Kamaliza, the barista-in-training, came on duty, brewed a wake-up cuppa and organised a taxi to the bus park for an onward journey to my destination at a school in nearby Uganda. I was due there to give a workshop to secondary school teachers entitled Science through Coffee. This year, things having gone well in Uganda, an identical flight took me back to Kigali, but what a difference at Bourbon. Lillian was now manager of the café and three more at other places in Rwanda. Meanwhile from the UK, I had made contact with Gahini ‘Groupe Scolaire’ (mixed senior secondary school) 50km to the east at the head of Lac Muhazi, part of a complex founded by the Anglican CMS (Church Missionary Society) a hundred years ago. On the site, besides the school, there is a nurses’ training centre, a guest house, a theological college, staff housing and a new cathedral to be completed next year. The bishop is Rt Revd Alexis Bilindabagabo. And one of the bishop’s nieces is ... you’ve guessed... Lilian. Talk about falling on my feet!

Reflections A few years ago, two acquaintances of mine, husband and wife, both over 90, who had no children and no close relatives still alive, were taken into care. I heard that they were living apart each in a different care home in different towns in Wiltshire. I thought I knew them pretty well and I resolved to visit them both to see if they needed any help. I went first to the husband who we shall call Ted (not his real name). He was confined to his bed and appeared to be pretty off-hand about his predicament and about the fact that he and Vera, his wife (not her real name), had been separated. I put this down to the trauma of his circumstances, which he refused to discuss. I left a book for Ted to read: Portobello by Ruth Rendell, a novel set in and around the Portobello Road in Notting Hill, London, and which follows the lives of Londoners living near the Portobello Road Market. I then went to see Vera who was living in a room in a barrack-like care home which was obviously clean and the patients appeared to be very well cared for. Nevertheless, there was an all-pervading smell of urine in the air of the place. Vera always used to greet me with a peck on the cheek. On this occasion, she looked at me with no sign of recognition. In her room, she had placed several pictures of Ted, some of him in Royal Naval uniform; he had served in the RNVR during the war. She also had a photograph of their wedding. I asked where the wedding had taken place; she replied “Portobello, you know, you were there”. I told Vera that I had not been at their wedding and again asked where it had been. She replied “Portobello, you know the church on the hill”. I had had no previous knowledge of where they had married and was therefore somewhat astounded. I asked her “what, Portobello Road, London?” She said “yes”. I found out from Vera the circumstances of their being taken into care. She told me that one morning, in the rain, Ted had gone into the garden of their house and she had seen him fall over. He was struggling without success to get up so she herself went out to help him. She too fell over and could not get up. They lay together in the pouring rain until a passer-by saw their plight and called the emergency services. They had then been taken to the care home in which Vera was now living but they were separated: Ted being accommodated in a ground floor room, she in the second storey room which she now occupied. Vera was convinced that Ted was still in the ground floor room and that she could see him from time to time. (I later found out from the staff of the home that they had told Vera that Ted had been transferred to another home and that she had been taken at least once to visit him.) I asked Vera if she had seen a doctor during her time at the home. She told me that she had and that the doctor had told her that she needed glasses. When I asked her if she was going to get glasses, she replied “oh no, Ted told me that as I did not read anything, I didn’t need them. Anyway, he said they were too expensive”. I had the impression that this discussion had occurred before their accident. I left a gift for Vera when I departed for home. Ted and Vera owned a four-bedroom detached house in a village near Bradford on Avon. The sale of this house would have provided more than enough to pay for their care. Ted would not comment on this aspect when I had seen him. My own medical problems caused me to spend some time in hospital around this time, and after my discharge I found that both Ted and Vera had died within a few days of one another and their funerals had already taken place. This story has poignancy in several ways:

Kenshin Anma Shiatsu is a wonderfully relaxing and energising form of massage therapy which is very ancient, predating even Shiatsu, and works to rebalance the entire system. Kenshin means ‘essence of health’, and Anma means ‘spreading peace with the hands’. It is performed fully clothed and lasts 75 minutes. Anma is non-diagnostic and is not recommended for pregnant women or cancer patients.

Continued from page 13

The amazing coincidence of my giving the book Portobello to Ted, not knowing that he and Vera had been married in or near Portobello Road, London. The tragedy of the final few weeks of life of a couple married for over 50 years, who had no comfort from a close family which simply did not exist. They were probably both suffering from the effects of the onset of dementia. Perhaps their neighbours should have intervened and informed the social services of their vulnerability, perhaps Ted should have paid more attention to the arrangements he should have made for their old age. The separation of an elderly couple taken into care seems somewhat inhuman, but this appears to be standard procedure. In the not-too-distant past, the local vicar would have been aware of Ted and Vera’s situation, but visiting the elderly does not seem to be a priority any longer for the clergy. We are told that the expectation of life increases every year. Children born today will, barring accidents and ill-health, expect to live into their late nineties, possibly attain their centuries. This all sounds good news, but not much is said about the quality of these extra years. The old biblical reckoning of three score years and ten or, if we are lucky, four score years of life was not far off the mark. The human body seems to begin to break down at this mark and many of us are kept alive by the wonders of modern medicine. The loneliness of the elderly, especially those who have no close relatives living nearby, is of growing concern. How to manage the growing numbers of old people, and those not so old, who are suffering from dementia is a problem which will only get larger. One thing is sure, everybody should give some serious thought as to how we ourselves are going to handle our own old age and those of our loved ones; don’t expect a great deal of assistance from government. John Crittenden

A Message from Dr Brian Matthew Box and Colerne Unitary Councillor

I would like to thank everyone who voted, not only in the local elections a month ago, but in the general election this past week. I am really humbled that so many of you supported me in both bids, especially young people who have been voting for the first time. It is both a pleasure and a task I take with great seriousness, that you have chosen me to represent you at County Hall. It was good to be able to join in discussions for the Neighbourhood Plan at an open meeting organised by Jane Mellett and the Parish Council. As you may be aware I am keen to see an energy park built at the airfield, with a community contribution paid into the Parish Council coffers for community projects, as is happening at Lyneham following a campaign that I led there. So watch this space for developments. Other campaigns for enhanced road safety in Colerne, including reduced speed and pedestrian crossings for parents and children from North Colerne to the School, I will be pursuing with Wiltshire Council and Colerne School and I will keep you posted on developments. My contact details are:

Email: [email protected] and mob: 07771 607983

and if I can help then please do get in touch.

Once again Colerne is offering free ‘Fun in the Sun’ sports programmes on the Rec for the school summer

holidays. Sponsored by Wiltshire Council and aimed at 5–11-year-olds, there will be three qualified sports coaches to run the sessions, which will include athletics, football, cricket, hockey, rugby, rounders, tennis and more. The dates are 24th and 31st July, and 7th and 14th August (all Mondays), and the sessions run from 10.00am–11.30am. Parents need to complete a medical form at the first session, but after that can leave their children for the duration of the session. Look for a note in book bags at the end of the School term, and the Facebook Colerne Community Page will feature further news.

We reported last month that tenants who had been served notice to quit their Hitchings Skilling garage tenancies were having difficulty contacting the landlord. Later in May the Parish Council Chair succeeded in getting a meeting with Green Square’s Head of Strategic Asset Management. The company specialises in social housing projects and needs to improve its funding for these purposes. So it is reviewing a number of its sites with a view to raising additional capital by sale. And this is what has happened with the Colerne garages. The Green Square executive acknowledged that communication with current tenants about these intentions could have been handled better. In open market sale, it’s possible that the site might interest a developer. Although it’s hard to see how this site could be successfully developed without creating significant access and parking problems, for the moment we can only wait to see what proposals come forward. We hope this clarifies the situation, but if any former tenants do require further information please have a word with the Parish Clerk for Green Square contact details.

Thanks to Keith Dorsey, the second stage refurbishment of this important village centre site has been completed, with the railings receiving a new coat of paint. Following shortly will be the creation of a new path and seating area – which will (after many years) enable the gate to open properly. A bit of work is needed on the bus shelter to the east side of the gardens. Finished off with new planters and some re-planting, the Gardens will once again be a welcoming and pleasant environment in which to meet and relax.

Fly-tipping – the illegal dumping of waste on roads or land – is an obvious health and safety hazard. But it is not widely known that householders have a legal duty to ensure that their waste is being disposed of by an authorised waste carrier. Some people pose as legitimate waste disposal businesses and then fly-tip rubbish that they have been paid to dispose of properly. If any fly-tipped waste can be traced to the household it came from, the householder can be prosecuted.

So we need to take reasonable steps to check that anyone hired to remove waste is authorised to do so. Ask where the rubbish will be going and ask to see a Waste Carriers Licence. Most of our local waste disposal businesses will be properly licensed, but just in case you come across one that is not it’s important to be aware of your responsibility to check.

Living in Iran in the Seventies I taught for two years at the Ashraf Pahlavi School, a private school owned by two Iranian women. The headmaster and most of the teaching staff were British and we followed a typically British syllabus. My teaching experience was very rewarding; the children were eager to learn and very well behaved. The school building was set in an established garden with an orchard of fruit trees which we walked through every morning to get to the classrooms. When the cherries were ripe, the maids would bring bowls of fruit into the classrooms at playtimes and the children helped themselves. There were also persimmon trees and it was important to ensure that the fruit was almost over-ripe before it was edible. Ffion was great friends with twin boys. Their mother was British and their father Iranian. About twenty-five years later my older daughter was at a hen party and met an Iranian friend of the bride. They established that in fact she was the twins’ sister and she was in my class. Small world. Her family, like many other families had left Iran when the Shah was deposed. Another of Ffion’s friends was the daughter of the head of the Shah’s secret police. When she came to Ffion’s birthday party, an armed guard was sitting in a car outside our house. Ffion also went to her birthday party, the whole class and the teacher were taken to her home in a bus, parents were not allowed! The garden was set up as a fairground complete with rides and stalls, but Ffion was quite disappointed not to have played ‘Pass the Parcel’. We saw a photograph of the child’s father’s body after the revolution, he had been shot by the incoming regime. Towards the end of my time at the school I was told by the headmaster that I had worked at the school illegally for two years, the administrators had never applied for a work permit for me. It transpired that if they had, I would not have been given a permit because of the nature of Del’s rather sensitive status as an army officer. Our posting to Iran came to an end in the summer of 1976. There was a lot of unrest in the country, people were beginning to revolt against the corruption in government and against the Shah. The British military personnel were given briefings fairly regularly at the embassy and we were told that if the situation became serious we would have to leave with very little notice. We were given a new box of composite rations to feed us if we became confined to the house. The box we had been given previously was one to keep in case of an earthquake. However, we still continued to live and work as we had done for the previous two years. My husband came home one evening with a message for me, saying that if I was going to drive to school the next day I should disguise the number plate on the car in case I encountered a demonstration. Our cars had number plates that identified us as working for the military. I covered them in mud and carried on as usual. The members of the British team working for the Shah were extra vigilant and would decide on the morning which route they would take to work. Their driver was given the route as they set off. They had been advised to do this for most of our stay as two American Colonels had been assassinated just before we went to Iran.

Historical Biographical Drama based on the unbelievable true life stories of three women, known as ‘human computers’ who during the early years of NASA helped the US space programme specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glen into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Continued from page 21 We left in August 1978, and the revolution developed rapidly with the Shah and his family finally leaving the country in January 1979. He was not welcomed in any European country nor in the United States; all governments were concerned with the repercussions that might ensue if they gave him shelter. He lived in Egypt, Morocco and Panama before returning to Egypt where he died of cancer in 1980. A few members of the team were still in Iran when we left, working until the end of their assignments. Eventually they were advised that they had two days to leave the country and were whisked out hurriedly on a British military plane. Living in Iran was a wonderful experience and I would love to visit the country again. Many years later our older daughter visited Tehran to attend the wedding of a university friend. She managed to find the house we lived in and found that it had been converted into a shop. People say that you should never go back to places that you loved when there had been a huge upheaval and maybe I should be content with my memories. Wendy James

Safari Supper – Saturday, 10th June We saw no rhino, elephant or giraffe on our Safari; there were no blue skies or sunshine, but what an enjoyable adventure it was for Colerne residents who took part in the latest Safari Supper. For those of you unfamiliar with this event we were not stalking wild animals, but tasty food and good company. Wonderfully organised, we travelled from house to house for each course, each destination unknown beforehand, making it a great opportunity to see who you would meet next and where! This event will be repeated, and for those of you who missed our evening adventure look out for the next one – it’s open to everyone and the more travellers the merrier! A big thank you to all of the cooks kind enough to open their dining rooms to us Safari folk, and especially to Celia Batterham who organised us and kept us on track.

Circus in School! Children at Colerne CE School enjoyed an amazing week of circus skills workshops in school at the end of May. The children had great fun learning how to juggle and balance feathers, use a diabolo, walk on stilts, ride on unicycles, walk a tightrope and other skills. The week ended with a performance to parents so that the children could show off their new-found skills. Adam and Anna from Tintin Class share their experiences: Roll up, roll up! The circus has come to Colerne! Last term the circus came to Colerne C of E Primary School. Steve, the person who taught us the cool tricks, came with lots of playful circus equipment. On the first day – Monday – we did balancing peacock feathers, and he taught us awesome tricks. Our favourite trick is when you throw the feather up in the

air, then you have to catch it on your fingertips. On Tuesday we did the diabolo. He taught us how to spin it, keep it level and how to throw it up and catch it without dropping it. On Wednesday, we had a go at flower sticks, they were

really fun and we all really enjoyed it, although it was quite challenging. The day before the show, we did plate-spinning and Steve told us how to put it on our finger and smile like an angel. He taught us how to lie down and pass it under our legs and stand back up again. On Friday we had our fantastic show where Steve picked people who were good at things to perform them. Everyone came up in groups. Our favourite act was the metal stilts. Every day, after the lessons, we would get free time where you could go on anything you wanted, and there were tightropes, unicycles and much more. It was so brilliant. Colerne School had a really amazing time and everyone would love for the circus to return again.

Target – One Million Miles! Community First is a Devizes based charity which supports communities across Wiltshire and Swindon, and in April it launched a digital campaign with the ambitious aim of achieving one million volunteering miles during 2017 through the Wiltshire LINK and Community Transport service. There are 45 LINK schemes and a further 21 community minibus schemes across Wiltshire and through its campaign, called #OneMillionMiles, Community First is hoping to recruit new volunteers. We know how much our own LINK service is valued by our clients, both for our regular journeys to doctor and hospital appointments, or to go shopping and also for the special outings that we provide throughout the year to see films and to visit local places of interest. We have some interesting visits planned for this summer which anyone who uses our service can find out about, either by reading our quarterly newsletter for clients or, for computer users, by logging on to our website www.boxlink.org.uk. The million miles travelled is not such a far-off target as you might imagine since in 2016 LINK ‘Good Neighbour’ volunteer car drivers travelled over 920,000 miles, with a significant percentage of journeys being health-related. We will find out at our own LINK’s Annual General Meeting on 6th July exactly how many miles our drivers covered last year, but judging by past years, it’s likely to be around 19,000. This is slightly below the average for all Wiltshire LINK schemes but there are many more rural schemes than ours where health-related journeys are likely to be longer. The aim of Community First’s campaign is to recruit 150 new volunteers for local LINK schemes and minibus groups, with the target of reaching one million miles travelled by volunteers over the coming year. Could you be the person who travels the millionth mile? Contact us on 07970 617617. Thanks. Steve Drew

Tuesday Tramp After last month’s glorious weather it was by way of complete contrast for this month. It threatened to be wet and windy and only 20 eager Trampers turned out. I was missing, being double-booked elsewhere. Sid had decided that a walk to the meadow in Colerne Park was favourite, hoping that all the wild flowers would be in abundance. There are quite a few routes and the map shows just one. I can remember when I first walked this route solo, and thought that solitude might have a downside. No such thing, as the woods were alive with wildlife and noise: birdsong, animals scuttling out of sight, the buzzing of insects, complimented by the contrasting light patterns of the sunlight through the canopy, augmented with the smells of the woods, crowded the senses in an almost intoxicating manner. Sitting in the broad open expanse of the meadow after the tree-lined woodland footpath, my mind wandered and recalled my childhood (about 4 years old) when my mother used to read me a goodnight story. In particular the story of Bambi, and how I loved the first part when Bambi met Thumper and all their adventures. I was always so sad when the hunters entered the story and tragedy struck. I cried myself to sleep many times, and even now emotions were stirred upon a recent re-read. Researching, I found that there are many hidden meanings to the story which can be attributed at the time of writing by the author and to Walt Disney’s cartoon film version that I have found fascinating, and for me especially as I did not know my Father until I was five when he returned after his army service in WW2. I wish I had my original copy of my book as a memento but I scribbled in it and wrecked it many years ago. Enough of this reminiscing as my Trampers enjoyed the walk in reasonable weather, but were slightly disappointed as they only found one orchid. The usual natter, noggin and nosh at the Fox afterwards concluded a pleasant morning. Our next Tramp will be on 4th July. Each Tramp is different and we always walk at an enjoyable pace, starting and finishing at the Fox; the departure time is 10.00am. Sensible attire and a mid-walk ‘munchie’ are essential.
