Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory (CBT-L5)

Assignment Handbook

Introduction1

You will need to keep a portfolio of your work during the course in which you cross reference all the assessments to the assessment criteria. The learning review will be the main assessment as this is an ongoing piece of work throughout the course. In your assignments and learning review it is recommended that you write the assessment criteria you have covered in the margin as you go along, and write this on your front marking sheet and tracking sheet each time you hand in a piece of work. (Your tutor will explain this to you when you start the course). This will help you to know where you are in the assessment process and you will be able to track your own progress. There will be regular tutorial sessions to help you with this process. Copies of all documents can be found on the CPCAB WEBSITE WWW.CPCAB.CO.UK. Resources can also be found on Moodle (you will be given details of this by the tutor at the beginning of the course).

The following section outlines the assignments and assessment that you will need to complete to pass the course. Your portfolio will be checked regularly and you will need to hand it in at the end of year one and the completed portfolio at the end of the course.

Please make sure that:

Your name and student ID is on all work handed in. You include a front marking sheet with all work handed in and a criteria

tracking sheet. You keep electronic copies of all work handed in. You reference your work using the Harvard System. You keep a record of all tutorials received in your portfolio (see tutorial form)

Note: You can book a tutorial session with the tutor if you have any concerns about the assignments or assessment process. Please contact your tutor as they are there to help you with this (see course handbook for contact details.

Self-review and Personal Learning Goals

Hand in date Discuss with IndividualsAim

To explore your thoughts and feelings related to where you are now in your personal developments and to set a plan for future learning on the course.

To give you the opportunity to explore where you are at the beginning of the course and to identify any needs or concerns you may have that could be addressed by the group and/or tutor.

It can record the thoughts and feelings you have embarking on your counselling training, you will be able to reflect on these at the end of the first year and then again at the end of the course.

You will be able to revisit and review the aims that you have set yourself during the course.

Unit 7 7.3

CPCAB LEVEL 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory (CBT-L5)

Reflective Journal (learning review)

Date 0ngoing throughout courseAims A reflection on your learning, self development and application

of theory and skills to client work This is the main assessment of the course and is a record and reflection on your

learning and self awareness during the course. It will give you the opportunity to reflect on your own process and self development and you will be able to demonstrate how you have linked theory to practice.

The journal should not be a descriptive account but a reflective evaluation of your learning and self awareness. It sometimes takes students a while to develop a reflective style of writing, but the journal will give you the opportunity to meet the assessment criteria of the course.

You will need to submit your journal for marking regularly and each entry will need to have an assessment front sheet (evidence) cross referenced to the page and assessment criteria covered.

It is good practice to write the assessment criteria that you have covered in the margin of the page, this will help you and the tutor keep track of criterion covered.

You will need to link theory to practice and reference all sources used with the Harvard Method of referencing.

Indicative content: What I have learnt. What has challenged my values and beliefs in relation to the group work or learning. What I have found easy/difficult. What I have learned about me How am I using what I have learnt in my work with clients. How I can put my learning into practice.

8

My action plan for future development. Assessment criteria: This piece of work has the potential to meet any criteria. Guidance Notes: Please hand in completed journal (up to date) for marking on hand-in dates. (Do not

hand in single weeks). The journal needs to be handed in with the tracking sheet so the criteria can be signed off by the tutor.

Indicate in the margin which assessment criteria have been covered. Number pages 1-50 …. Use headings, bullet points etc Leave gaps between paragraphs etc. Reference quotes (Harvard) Use font Times New Roman, size 12 with 1.5 spacing Please present journal in an assignment wallet (no plastic wallets)

Unit 7 7.3

External Assessment

CBT-L5 - Guidance to writing external assessment Case Review

16

The case review is expected to show that you have developed the skills and knowledge necessary to work safely and effectively within a CBT framework at level 5.

The case review must be structured using each of the 7 headings below. It should provide a coherent summary of your therapeutic counselling work with ONE client (covering at least six sessions) undertaken during the life of the course. You may give examples of what was said, if relevant, but the case review should not be a transcript nor should it be a session by session account. You need to give specific examples from your work, throughout. Confidentiality must be ensured at all times.

The case review should:

reflect a sound underpinning of integrated CBT theory and skills; evidence a clear understanding of the therapeutic relationship and the therapeutic

process within a CBT framework; give a clear sense of your client and your own self awareness; show a mature use of supervision appropriate to the integration of CBT theory and

skills.

Common mistakes are – not being able to demonstrate sufficient evidence of integrating the skills and theory of CBT coherently into your work, not showing appropriate maturity or depth of counselling practice, self awareness and application of learning from supervision, not showing adequate critical reflection and evaluation, running out of words by sections 6 and 7.

Please reference your work accurately and include a bibliography at the end. Attach the signed cover sheet given in your Candidate Guide. The total word count – including all quotations – must be between 3,000 – 3,500 words. Footnotes and the bibliography are not included in the word count. Appendices and other material are not required and will not be marked.

The case review does not have to be completed under exam conditions but it must be all your own work and must not have been previously assessed by your tutor.

The review should be written on a word processor, using double spacing, wide margins and page numbering. If handwritten, please ensure writing is legible as illegible papers may be deemed ‘Not Proficient’. Please discuss any additional needs with your training centre’s learning support department.

If you are Not Proficient in the external assessment your tutor can ask CPCAB for verbal feedback in order to offer you guidance for re-sitting the case review. If you have been found Not Proficient in your first submission CPCAB requests that you write a fresh case review (for the re-sit) based on a different client. Rather than merely ‘tweaking’ the original one you will be asked to sign the cover sheet to confirm that your resubmission is based on a different client.

17

You must present your answers under the 7 headings given below:

1. Context and boundaries of work Describe the context in which you work showing your understanding of the

boundaries and ethical framework for your CBT practice.

Guidance:

The assessor is looking for

A description of the context and setting where you provide CBT counselling. Evidence of how you established a client/counsellor agreement or contract. Explanation of how an ethical framework informs your work.

2. Assessment/diagnosis Use the CBT framework coherently to arrive at an initial assessment of your client.

Guidance:

The assessor is looking for

An explanation of how you used CBT tools to assess your client and arrive at an initial case formulation and problem list.

3. Awareness of diversity issues Work with awareness of diversity issues within a CBT framework.

Guidance:

The assessor is looking for

Your use of CBT concepts to reflect on issues of diversity relevant to your work with this client.

Evidence of how you worked with these issues with reference to your client’s patterns and schemas.

4. Development of the therapeutic relationship Show how you worked with aspects of the CBT relationship for the benefit of the

client.

18

Guidance:

The assessor is looking for

Your critical reflections on the therapeutic relationship with reference to your client’s patterns and processes.

Evidence, with examples, of how your understanding of the relationship informed and enhanced the depth of your work with this client.

5. Use of self awareness Reflect on how your self awareness impacted on the therapeutic work.

Guidance:

The assessor is looking for

Your use of CBT concepts to critically reflect on your own process - your response to your client and your impact on the therapeutic work.

An evaluation of how insights from own personal work enhanced the therapeutic process within the CBT framework.

6. Theory underpinning skills Work within a coherent CBT framework of theory and skills in the counselling

process.

Guidance:

The assessor is looking for

A clear description of the CBT theoretical framework that underpins your practice. Evidence of how you have consistently integrated CBT theoretical understanding and

use of skills/interventions to work coherently with this client. A critical evaluation of your work at level 5 with this client within the framework of a

CBT approach.

7. Use of supervision Critically reflect on your use of supervision.

Guidance:

The assessor is looking for

19

Critical reflection on how you used supervision, as a CBT practitioner, to explore key issues from your work with this client.

Integration of insights and learning from supervision into your work with this client.

Marking scheme:Each section of the case review is awarded between 0 and 3 marks on the following basis:

0 = no evidence 1 = minimum evidence

2 = satisfactory evidence 3 = robust evidence

Candidates must achieve at least ONE mark in each section and an overall mark of 11 out of 21 to be assessed as Proficient. Candidates can be awarded ½ marks.

Please note that each section carries equal marks (3) so you are advised to take this into account when deciding how much to write in each section.

Internal Moderation

All internal assessment will be marked by the course tutor and a percentage of these will be second marked. The moderation procedures will follow the standardised procedures recommended by the college and CPCAB. This enables both the college and awarding body to check out that the correct process is being followed by the coordinator and course tutors and that standard are fairly applied across all learners. The tutors and internal moderator will work together to achieve this

External verification

The CPCAB will arrange for an external verifier to visit the college periodically and they will want to speak to you about your learning experience on the course. They will also want to see a sample of your work. You will be notified when such visits are due.

Assignment Writing

Presentation of your assignment

20

1. Front Cover: this is the first part of the assignment that will be seen, so it is important that it looks good. Make sure it has all the relevant details, i.e. name, course, Course Code, Student ID number, assignment number and name and date.

2. A front marking sheet for the assignment which needs to be signed by you (your work will be returned if this is not signed).

2. Contents Page: this should identify the sections of the assignment and their page numbers.

3. Introduction: this is the first part of the main body of the assignment – it should introduce the topic of the assignment and explain how you went about the assignment, such as the range of resources used, and so on.

4. Main Body: Findings: this will be the largest part of your assignment since it will include the information that you have gathered and organised in a way that answers the assignment questions. Use the assignment tasks or parts of the tasks to help you divide the information up into logical sections. Give these sections headings that relate to the assignment topic(s). You can also use diagrams or graphs to illustrate your written comments.

5. Conclusion: your assignment should always end with a conclusion. This should refer back to the introduction – in particular, has the assignment met its aims? The conclusion should also include the overall judgements about the topic and your own work.

6. Appendix/Appendices: any additional information which is helpful, but not essential to the assignment, should be included after the main part of the report. Any appendix should be numbered and identified in the contents page.

References / Bibliography: any books or journal articles quoted in the body of your report should be listed here. The bibliography should be listed in alphabetical order as follows: author (date of publication), title of book/article, place and publisher of book – or name or journal, issue and page numbers.

Appendix 3

REFERENCING

Good investigators acknowledge the source of their ideas, and give full details of the works, journals etc where they got them. We ask you to use the following conventions when you

21

are referring to a publication in the text of your report, and when compiling your list of references at the back of your assignment

In the assignment text

It is important to identify the source of your information in the main part of your assignment e.g.

Rogers (1957) emphasises the importance of the three core conditions in the relationship ……..

A range of research has demonstrated the benefits of relaxation (Trowler, 1977; Bryan & Argyle, 1980, Smith, 1985).

Finally, if you make a direct quote word for word from a book/journal, you should place the quote in “Congruence is..............” and also add the page number where the quote can be found, e.g. “We have found this programme useful when applied in a flexible way”. (Rustin & Cook, 1983: 78)

Or Roger (1957:4) identifies “Empathy is………”

e.g.
