Coleg Gwent amongst top further education colleges in Wales
. .
Jasmine Evans, 18, Duffryn: Art & Design“The Extended Diploma gives me loads of creative freedom
in my practical work and the underpinning theory I need to
gain the qualification will help me get into university. Without
the added pressure of exams, the course is perfect for me.
Learning and hanging out with people who are into the same
things as me has made me more confident and I’ve made
loads of friends.”
What our students say...
Studying at Coleg Gwent is fantastic. But don’t just take our word for it; hear it from those who are currently studying with us:
”“ The Extended Diploma gives me
loads of creative freedom in my practical work and the underpinning theory I need to gain the qualification will help me get into university.
Dan Ellul, 18, Newport: Construction“I love doing the practical work as I’m getting
hands-on experience that I’ll use when I get
a job. We also do classroom-based learning
but everything’s taught in a construction
context – for example, numeracy relates to
measurements and in literacy we learn using
language used in industry. My advice to
anyone making a decision about their next
step would be to get skills and qualifications
as they’ll open doors to jobs in the future
– which is exactly what I’m doing at Coleg
Gwent.”
3
Rachael Pumford, 24, Newport: Hairdressing“The most important thing for me when learning
a trade is that you can trust, respect and get on
with those teaching you – which is exactly the
relationship I have with my tutors. They all have
professional experience so as well as teaching
you techniques and skills, they give you advice
on how to get work in the industry. As well as
being local to where I live, I’d come to the college
during year 11 at school so I was familiar with
the friendly campus.”
Hasham Ashraf, 16, Newport: Motor Vehicle“My brother did the course last year and really
enjoyed it so I thought it was a great way
to further my interest in cars. I like the link
between learning the theory about cars in
the classroom and seeing it in practice in the
workshop – it brings everything together so I’ll
have the knowledge and skills that will get me
a job in the future.”
”The most important thing for me when learning a trade is that you can trust, respect and get on with those teaching you – which is exactly the relationship I have with my tutors.
”“ My advice to anyone making a decision
about their next step would be to get skills and qualifications as they’ll open doors to jobs in the future – which is exactly what I’m doing at Coleg Gwent.

Info for parents/carers
Coleg Gwent is one of the largest and most successful
colleges in Wales, and we’re also your local College. In
our last Estyn inspection (2014), we matched the best
performance of any college in Wales. The inspection
highlighted many strengths including;
- Excellent results- One of the top three performing colleges in Wales
We’re committed to developing confident and ambitious
young people, and extra-curricular activities are a great
way of doing this. So alongside their course, your son/
daughter will be able to get involved in sport, fundraising and
volunteering opportunities. This equips young people with
life and work skills, helps them meet new people and looks
great on their CV.
Student safety and wellbeing is our priority. All our staff
undertake safeguarding training and our extensive support
network ensures they are safe and have access to support
services that meet their individual needs. We insist on high
standards of behaviour supported by our college behaviour
policy.
We offer excellent support for all students. Every student
has their own Personal Tutor to support and guide them
through their time at college. They complete an Initial
Assessment when they enrol to identify any additional
learning needs so we can give them support for things
like literacy and numeracy, either in the classroom or
outside of classes. Students with learning difficulties and/
or disabilities are provided with support, specialist advice
and resources to help them achieve their best. We offer
specialist one-to-one tuition for dyslexic learners and
those with other specific learning difficulties, as well as
putting in place access arrangements for examinations.
- An additional support assistant or communication support worker in class- Help with appropriate assistive technology- Basic skills taught by specialist learning support advisors- Extra pastoral support or specialist careers advise

Yes, if your son or daughter is in full time education whether
in school or the college. Students can also apply for
assistance through the Education Maintenance Allowance
(EMA) to provide some support during their studies.
Apprentices may be considered to be employed, rather than
have student status; therefore, if your son or daughter is
considering an apprenticeship scheme, you would need to
discuss the possible impact on benefit entitlement.
Q WILL MY FAMILY CONTINUE TO RECEIVE BENEFITS IF MY CHILD LEAVES SCHOOL TO ATTEND THE COLLEGE?
We monitor all full time students’ progress and attendance
through electronic individual learning plans (eILPs) which
we use to keep you informed through parents’ evenings and
regular reports. We encourage students to share access to
their eILP with their parents/carers. If you have any concerns
please don’t hesitate to contact your son or daughter’s
Personal Tutor, their Head of School or Head of Learner
Services. Learner Services will be happy to provide you with
any contact details. If you still have any queries please get
in touch with Learner Services at the campus – we’re keen
to ensure your son/daughter’s time at college goes smoothly
and equips them for their next step.
