Easter is fast approaching. Changes in seasons which for the north I suspect, will be looking forward to warmer weather and for the south I hope we don’t have the extremes this winter that the north has had. Our forum is now on line so we welcome discussion on our web- site http://coinnurses.org/?page_id=2212 The consultation period for Every Newborn Action Plan is com- plete and the responses have been compiled . Thank you to all that responded. The finalised Plan must be submitted to the WHA governing body at the end of March for translation and distribution to the Member States before the Assembly in the 3rd week of May. Thank you all for your dedicated support in this process. Every year, approximately 500,000 children are born preterm in Europe one baby in ten. However, despite the considerable size and continuous growth of this group and the impact on the health of future European citizens, maternal and newborn health still rank low on national health agendas. For those of you that can, get along to the Socks For Life art exhibition open- ing in Brussels. Steacutephane Eacutetienne Tarnier (29 April 1828 ndash 23 November 1897) was a French obstetrician who studied and practiced medicine in Paris Tarnier is remembered for his work involving the peri-natal aspects of obstetrics and particularly treatment of pre-mature infants In the 1870s he realized that keeping a constant temperature was not sufficient for a premature infants sur-vival He believed that isolation hygiene appropriate feeding and a warm humid environment were also necessary Inspired by a device used to incubate poultry Tarnier introduced proto-types of infant incubators to the Paris Materniteacute in 1881 These devices were basically wooden boxes with glass lids and com-partments that contained hot-water bottles He called his baby-warming device a couveuse[ and through it Tarnier was re-sponsible for a 28 decrease in infant mortality over a three-year period at the Paris Materniteacute It was not until 1922 however that hospitals started grouping the newborn infants into one area now called the Neonatal In-tensive-Care Unit (NICU) httppubmedcentralcanadacapmccarticlesPMC1721389pdfv086p0F137pdf
