Coiled Tubing Safety Impact Firing Head, Percussion Initiator Bottom Load

DescriptionThe Coiled Tubing Safety Impact Firing Head is designed to run perforating guns,

jet cutters or severing tools on coil tubing. This system is actuated by dropping

a ball and pressuring up the tubing. Once the ball is seated, a predetermined

pressure is applied to shear the precision shear pins. After shearing, the firing

pin strikes the detonator causing the guns to fire.

Warning: The assembly of this tool requires the handling of an Explosive Device and all safety precautions must be adhered to and observed! Only personnel trained in explosive handling procedures should be allowed to arm this assembly

Caution: The shear pin values shown on the package accompanying this tool are valid ONLY for the tools listed in this manual!

Caution: Correct shear pin values will vary between lot dates, always reference the data accompanying the pins!

Note: Check all items against the parts list to be sure of having the correct parts and quantities.

Note: Check for any damage to the parts which would prevent the part from being assembled correctly, easily and safely. Do attempt to assemble the firing heading if any of the components require excessive force to install. It is recommended to fit test the assembly of the firing head without O-Rings to insure binding of moving parts does not occur. Replace components if binding prevents parts from moving.

1.0 Ball Activated Differential Piston Assembly1.1 Install the O-Ring (item 7) into the top groove of the Piston (item 2) and apply grease to the

O-Ring. Apply grease to the seal bore of the Piston Housing (item 1), then insert the Piston into the Piston Housing until the shear pin groove is aligned with the shear pin holes in the Piston Housing.

1.2 With the piston installed into the piston housing, insert the calculated number of shear pins (item 4) required for the job application. Refer to the Pinning Calculations and Temperature Correction Charts. When installing the shear pins, try to evenly space the pins around the tool, with the tabs of the pins facing outward.

1.3 After the required number of pins has been installed, place the two (2) O-Rings (item 6) in the housing pin groove. These O-Rings will retain the pins in position. Install the O-Ring (item 8) into the thread relief groove of the pin end of the Piston Housing.

1.4 Apply Grease to the O-Ring (item 8) and the Piston Housing pin threads. Thread into the Retainer cap (item 3) and tighten. The Ball Activated Differential Piston Assembly is now complete.

2.0 Safety Impact Assembly w/ Det. Body2.1 Insert the Release Rod (item 2) into the Release Rod Body (item 3) so the milled flat on the

Release Rod is in alignment with the roll pin hole. Insert and hammer in the Roll Pin (item 10) until the pin end is flush with the rod body. The Release Rod should slide easily without binding.

2.2 Thread the Firing Pin – LP, HP (item 7) into the Ball Retainer Piston – LP, HP (item 1) and tighten with non-marring tool. Install the O-Ring (item 15) onto the Ball Retainer Piston for the LP assembly. Install the O-Rings (item 15) onto the Firing Pin - HP for the HP assembly.

Note: When installing the O-Rings onto the HP Firing Pin, it is recommend to use the installation tool (TC-022-0011-000) using the procedures below. The installation tool will help to prevent the O-Rings from tearing when stretching over the tip of the firing pin.

Seizing cord is recommended when installing the O-Rings. Place the installation tool over the end of the Firing Pin. Apply a small amount of grease to the inside of the O-Ring and the surface of the installation. Slide the first O-Ring down the shaft of the installation tool into the first groove on the firing pin. Before installing the second O-Ring add more grease to the surface of the installation tool and inside of the O-Ring. Using the seizing cord slide the second O-Ring over the first O-Ring, and into the second groove. Slowly remove the seizing cord.

2.3 Slide the Release Rod so the smaller diameter is visible through the four (4) holes of the body. Place a small amount of grease in the holes and inset the four (4) Retaining Balls (item 11). The Retaining Balls should be flush with the surface of the body.

2.4 Holding the Release Rod in the rod body, slide the Ball Retainer Piston/Firing Pin all the way onto the rod body. Make sure that the Retaining Balls remain in place.

2.5 Retract the Release Rod and pull ball retainer away from the body at the same time. This procedure will lock the Retaining Balls into the Ball Retainer Piston and align the coiled pin holes in the rod body and Release Rod.

2.6 With the holes of the Release Rod and body aligned, insert the Coiled Pin (item 9) and tap it into the body and through the Release Rod until flush with the body O.D.

2.7 For the LP Assembly apply grease to the O-Ring on the Ball Retainer Piston and the threads of the rod body (Firing Pin Side). Apply grease to Firing Head Body in the bore after the holes. For the HP Assembly apply grease to the O-Rings on the HP Firing Pin and the threads of the rod body. Apply grease to Firing Head Body in the bore after the holes. Insert and thread the assembly (LP, HP) into the Firing Head Body (item 6) and tighten. Install the O-Rings (item 16) on the Impact Body. The Modified Safety Impact Assembly (LP, HP) section is now complete.

2.8 (These steps MUST be accomplished with NO DETONATOR in the detonator housing.) Apply grease to the threads and O-Rings on the Firing Head Body and thread into the Detonator Housing (item 4) until both bodies are flush metal to metal. Tighten with no more than 150 lb-ft (203 Nm) of torque. Install the two Set Screws (item 8) into the upper end of the detonator body and tighten (10-15lb-ft, 14-20Nm).

3.0 Safety Impact w/ Ball Activated Assembly3.1 Apply grease to the Piston Housing of the Ball Activated Assembly and the pin thread of

the Release Rod Body of the Safety Impact Assembly (LP, HP). Thread the Ball Activated Assembly onto the Safety Impact Assembly (LP, HP).

Caution: The next steps are only used prior to the well operation. Never ship an assembled firing head with an explosive component.

4.0 Detonator Installation4.1 Remove the CP Detonator (item A) from its shipping package and install O-ring (item 14) into

the groove in the bottom of the CP detonator. Place the CP with O-Ring into the Retainer Nut (item 5). Install the CP-Rubber Washer (item 12) on top of the CP detonator and inside the lip of the retainer nut.

4.2 Thread in the retainer nut assembly with CP detonator into the detonator body until the lip of the retainer nut makes contact with internal surface of the detonator housing (item 4). Do not force the retainer nut, if it is hard to thread, remove and check for cause. The retainer nut uses a 3/8” Allen Wrench or the Hex Socket (TC-033-0010-000) to thread in. To secure, use no more than 20 lb-ft (27 Nm) of torque. A torque wrench is recommended.

Note: To secure the retainer nut, use no more than 20 lb-ft (27 Nm) of torque. A torque wrench is recommended. Caution: DO NOT use any pointed device to install the Retainer Nut Assembly into the detonator Body as it may cause detonation and serious injury.

4.3 Install the Top Sub Rubber Washer (item 13) inside the detonator body and up against the retainer nut. This washer is used to prevent the retainer nut from backing off and as a debris barrier.

Warning: The firing head assembly is now ARMED, and caution must be used when handling and installing it on the main well device! REMEMBER you are handling explosive components so handle safely and do not over tighten any connections.

Imperial Pinning CalculationsA. Correct for bottom hole temperature (BHT). Refer to Temp. Correction Chart.

B. Calculate actual shear value at bottom hole temperature. psi/pin (@72°F) X (correction factor) = psi/pin @ BHT

Refer to pin shipping bag for listed pin value to use.

C. Calculate required number of pins for proposed shear value. (differential shear value) psi ÷ (step B) psi/pin = pins

You must use a minimum of four (4) shear pins with this Firing Head, for safety and Design reasons.

D. Either round up or down the number of pins depending on operational conditions

E. There is a ±5% operating tolerance on the tool.

F. Calculate an average, high, and low operating pressure

Average: pins x psi/pin = psi

High side: 1.05 x (average psi) = psi

Low side: 0.95 x (average psi) = psi
