District Governor Omen came on his third try. We had our Immediate Past President Anne hand out some awards to members of the Club. We thanked Anne for a job well done for the last two years and wish her the best for the projects within the club and fun with her grandchildren now she has freed some time up. On the night, DG Omen awarded Lion Rob Shanahan with the V6 Chris August Award well done Rob. Lion Rob presented DG Omen with a handmade Clock which he had made, which was much appreciated.. From there DG Omen installed our new team for the coming year and I wish everyone well in their new roles in the club. This year I will be trying to involve new members in the club in minor roles within projects so they can learn how they are run. This will not put them in the deep end but let them learn what we can and cannot do within Lions, so they can, if they wish, take on a project later if they choose. With The COVID-19 happening this has reduced what we can do at this time. We are lucky they didnt reduce numbers so far for groups and business at this stage its up to 20 people with spacing of 1.5M so we are still able to have business meetings and we will have a dinner meeting this month at the RSL Club wh8ch provides more room. We have also started work on a new BBQ trailer and have been busy getting everything we need for it, with Cohuna Rewinds & Pumps Service and Davey Pumps Australia donating a pump to the Club (see newsletter). Well done to Lion Rob as he has obtained a grant for the Trailer of $5000.00 and a grant for the Leos of $1200.00 for a new shelter at the Cohuna nursing home (see newsletter). We are still doing wood every Saturday at 10am with everything going well there. Its a great time together if you have not been, come talk or help as we finish with sausage rolls or scones and a hot drink at the end. Its good to catch up and make sure everyone is fine. With COVID-19 please look after yourself and family if you see anyone who is having a hard time, help them out if you can, as a talk is all they need. If its something bigger let me know and we will see if the Club can help or go higher to a support group or to one of the Lions foundations if needed. Stay safe Anthony Troy

COHUNA LIONS CLUB INC.

PRESIDENT REPORT

Hi Everyone

We started off with our Changeover dinner at the Bower Tavern, where a good night was had by all.

We are lucky they

didn’t reduce numbers so far for groups and business at this stage its up to 20 people with spacing of 1.5M so we are still able to have business meetings and we will have a dinner meeting this month at the RSL Club wh8ch provides more room.

It’s a great time together if you have not been, come talk or help as we finish with sausage rolls or scones and a hot drink at the end. It’s good to catch up and make sure everyone is fine.

Dear Lions,

As COVID-19 continues to have its effect, and

now has us isolated in our respective states, I

thought it was time to send a letter to say hello

and send my best wishes to each of you.

My visits to your Clubs have been put off to later

dates and of course these will be checked again

prior to my visit. I realise some clubs may be

hampered by venue restrictions and may have to

change the dates again, and that is OK.

I now take things week by week. As I expect you

all do. Please resume your meetings where

possible. If not, consider hosting online meetings.

Please look after your members and keep in

touch and help where required.

f your Club does not have a newsletter now would

be a good time to start one. Even one page could

contain information to keep members up to date.

Maybe include birthdays/anniversaries or a joke.

Use this down time to think of new projects. Have

a look at the ‘Innovative Service Ideas/ New

Projects/Staying Connected’ information included

with this letter. Maybe there is something there

for your Club.

The District Changeover dinner, scheduled for

July 25, has been cancelled and the Cabinet

meeting on July 26 will now be held via Zoom. At

this stage it is anticipated the District Convention

will be a one-day event on Saturday October 24.

Hosted by the Wodonga Lions Club

The convention will be held at the Albury

Commercial Club.

I am always available for a chat or catchup. I

welcome emails to [email protected] or calls to

03 58 852 732 (evenings please as I am

working).

Please stay safe, stay

well, keep in touch with

each other and your

community. Be patient,

this will all end one day.

Yours in Lionism

District Governor

Carol Kennedy

‘Fly a Kite for Sight’

The health pandemic has seen many Australians social distancing at home in recent months which could be doing damage to our eyesight.

Lions volunteers and the Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP) are reminding Australians that a little sunshine each day promotes good eye health and helps reduce the onset of near sightedness, particularly in children.

In response to the increase in Myopia (near sightedness), especially in children,

LEHP has launched a new campaign which will be rolling out in communities across Australia in coming months.

Lions Clubs will be encouraging members of the community to get outside and “Fly a Kite for Sight”. People will be encouraged to submit a photo or video as part of a national competition and campaign.

Myopia, or near sightedness, is a common vision problem where children see very well when reading, writing, or using electronic devices but distant objects are blurred. Evidence shows that sunlight has special properties beneficial to vision health. Specifically, exposure to sunshine helps reduce the risk of developing near sightedness. This is of significant concern as Myopia is also associated with retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, and myopic maculopathy.

“Flying a kite outdoors is a simple, low cost and effective method to help prevent myopia onset. We encourage Australians to get outside to an open area with your family and fly a kite. Overcome the increase in time spent on electronic devices by getting out in the sun,” says Rodney Jackson, Optometrist and Technical Advisor to LEHP.

“Do it in the morning to avoid exposure to UV light, do it with your family, do it while following social distancing and have fun,” adds Jackson

A sample kite template with construction instructions has been produced by LEHP and can be downloaded from www.lehp.org.au or you can design and build your own.

LEHP will be asking Lions Clubs and individuals to take photos and videos of kite flying and send them to the LEHP National Office by 15th September 2020. They will be used in the lead up and during World Health Day 8th October 2020

There will be prizes for 1) Best Designed Kite 2) Best Photo 3) Best Video.

COHUNA LIONS CLUB LIONS TAILS Issue 1 July 2020

After almost 7 years, I have handed over the rains to Fiona and Leiza who will do a great job. In the time the club has been running we have had over 45 LEOS through our club. Some have stayed and made an impact, others decided it wasn’t for them and moved on.

Our small country town produced a LEO of the Year who not only represented us at State but National Level, an International Presidents Award recipient for their work at the Village.

The group we have now are all hard workers and dedicated to being LEOS. I know they will continue to make me proud as well as our Club members.

Rob and Norm have completed the Shelter at the Cohuna Retirement Village, which was put to use very quickly. This will provide a very useful all weather area for the “Passive Recreation Activities” of some of the residents. Thank you

We have completed two working bees in a garden to assist a local resident.

Delivered the phone books around tow. So we are still active

LEOS will be holding their Changeover Dinner on Friday 24th July 2020 at the Scout Hall. Due to COVID-19 restrictions there will not be an invitation to all Lions to join us.

However, we look forward to Anthony coming along as the new Club President.

Now all we need is the Market to open up again so we can go back to work..
