MD Convention Tamworth 2014

Four Lions from Cohuna travelled up to Tamworth to attend the 62 Multi-District Convention with around 1,500 in attendance.

We have the special opportunity to meet and speak with International President Barry Palmer who made himself available for photos, and made a point of speaking to the Leos and Youth of the Year contestants who attended. We did get a few minutes to check out the “Big Guitar”.

Members from V6 manned a stand during the MD Convention to promote our Junior Public Speaking project. This project was nominated to be a National Category “B” project, but disappointingly did not win the vote. It will not be able to be re-submitted for an other three years. So time to polish up the presentation, the project is still a District project and looks like being taken up by several other Districts following the information provided at the MD Convention booth.

Kerang Lion, Colin Myers was presented with a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship by IP Barry Palmer in a special ceremony in front of the V6 booth. Colin was recognised for his work during the Kerang Flood event and his continued work in the recovery process and his work to promote Lionism across the District. This may be the only occasion that Lion Colin was found speechless but very proud.

Youth Exchange Program

“Joining Hands”

The program is looking for prospective host families in all parts of Australia to offer hospitality to visitors from many different countries. Both city and country hosts are sought to offer a balance of what Australia has to offer.

Host Families are needed urgently, if anyone can take an exchange, please contact National Youth Exchange Chairman - Bill Shepherd [email protected] or check out the web site at lionsclubs.org.au/activities/youth/ye

Beyondblue is working to reduce the impact of depression and anxiety in the community by

raising awareness and understanding, empowering people to seek help, and supporting

recovery, management and resilience.

Lions Clubs across Australia are “Joining Hands” with the Beyond Blue organisation to increase public awareness and understanding of Anxiety and Depression.

Clubs are asked to host a public meeting, inviting members from local support organisations and health care groups to raise awareness and understanding of the problems not only for the suffer but for their families and communities.

Beyond Blue will assist with information brochures and promotional material and where possible, a Key note speaker to attend. At the MD Convention to be held in Newcastle in 2015, one of the Key Note Speakers will be former Victorian Premier Geoff Kennett .

Check out their website for more information: www.beyondblue.org.au

Information from Cabinet....

Clubs are asked to think about our Foundations when discussing end of year disbursements

ALF, VLF and LCIF

Clubs are reminded that when sending in funds to ALF to mark them to be used for an award in the future. Funds not identified for an award are not credited against your Club.

Applications for Awards and requests for further information should be directed to ALF Chairman Lion John Beal at [email protected]

Visitations between clubs are encouraged during the year not just at Changeover time. Revitalise your club with interesting visits and the exchange of ideas for future projects.

At the MD Convention members were notified that Lions Mints and Cakes will be combined. Clubs are asked to nominate a Chairman and to look for new ways to promote these items.

Clubs are encouraged to invite a District Chairman to your Club or Zone meetings to provide information on their portfolio, ideas for promoting the projects and lots more.

New Zone Chairman appointed to Zone 2 - Lion Bill Quinn from Pyramid Hill Club. Outgoing Zone Chairman Lion Norm Walkington was thank for his three years service.

Josh Heap, Rachael Kirk and Hanna Walkington along with Lions Wendy and Allan Walkington and Leo Advisor Lee, travelled to Corowa to help their Leo Club celebrate their 2nd Changeover Dinner.

Three Leos from Wangaratta also travelled to the dinner along with the Multi-District Leo Chairman Lion Martin Peebles from Sydney.

It was a great night with the Lions Club providing the 3 course meal in their club rooms for the more than 60 strong crowd. DG Lynn presented Leo Jacob (Corowa) with a “Leo of Honour” award for his work as President over the past two years and his efforts to promote the Leo Program. Jacob won the MD Leo of the Year in 2013 and was a contender again this year.

The Leos are all keeping in touch via Facebook or text, exchanging ideas to help build their Leo Clubs.

MD Chairman Martin has expressed an interest in attending the Cohuna Leo Changeover Dinner in June, and was happy to put on the head from the Lion costume to join the Leos for a photo.

There are now 6 Leo Clubs in V6, Cobram on the Murray, Cohuna, Corowa, Rochester, Tungamah and Wangaratta with several more clubs in the wings.

Across Australia there has been an increase in interest in forming Leo Clubs.

After discussions with the Corowa Leos and checking out their Den, our Leos held a “Movie Night” as a social event, sharing tea and working out how the Den can be improved to be a fun place to be in. Lots of ideas and suggestions going around.

Cohuna Leo’s continue to develop their plans for the “Youth Garden” at the Retirement Village. The plan will include the development of several raised garden beds to allow residents to use them from wheel chairs. Re-planting of the cleaned out fernery and existing garden beds. These plans need to be submitted to the Board at the Village for their approval prior to implementation.

This project forms part of the submission for Tidy Towns.
