“Poised to become one of the top piano trios in the world”

(Washington Post), the newly formed Montrose Trio will

make their Vancouver debut on the Music in the Morning

stage.

Anchored by none other than Vancouver favourite Jon

Kimura Parker, and former Tokyo String Quartet members

Martin Beaver and Clive Greensmith, this exciting new

piano trio showcases the impeccable playing and captivating

performance style of these accomplished soloists and

chamber musicians. Together as an ensemble they offer

the music world a new experience.

An officer of the Order of Canada, Jon Kimura Parker is

one of Canada’s leading ambassadors of music and one

of the most high profile artists on the international scene.

As a soloist, Martin Beaver has appeared with dozens of

orchestras worldwide, including the Montreal Symphony.

Clive Greensmith was principal cellist of London’s Royal

Philharmonic Orchestra before setting out on a career

as a soloist and chamber musician.

Sergei Babayan, piano

Hailed for his emotional intensity, energy and remarkable

levels of colour, the great piano master Sergei Babayan

brings a deep understanding and insight to his playing.

Born in Armenia into a musical family, Babayan began

his studies there with Georgy Saradjev and continued

at the Moscow Conservatory with Mikhail Pletnev, Vera

Gornostayeva and Lev Naumov. Babayan took his first trip

outside of the former USSR in 1989, and he went on to

win consecutive first prizes in several major international

competitions.

Babayan has performed with many major orchestras

including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre

Nationale de Lille and The Cleveland Orchestra. He is

also on faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music and

the Juilliard School. For this performance, Babayan will

share an entire program of the great composer Johann

Sebastian Bach, including the monumental piano work:

The Well Tempered Klavier Book One.

“Babayan is no mere pianist. He is a master-musician for whom the piano is his voice, his orchestra.” — the scotsman

Juilliard415With guest conductor Nicholas McGegan

The Juilliard School—the name is synonymous with the

gold standard in performing arts education. Music in the

Morning is thrilled to bring Juilliard415, the principal

period-instrument ensemble of the school, along with

vocalists and guest conductor Nicholas McGegan, to

our stage in what will be a truly spectacular event.

Long hailed as “one of the finest baroque conductors of

his generation” (London Independent) and “an expert in

18th-century style” (The New Yorker), Nicholas McGegan

is recognized for his probing and meaningful explorations

of music of all periods.

Juilliard415 brings a program that includes Haydn’s

Symphony No. 6 (Le Matin), and Telemann’s masterpiece,

Die Tageszeiten (Times of Day), a collection of secular

cantatas. With close to thirty instrumentalists and four

solo singers, this program will fill the hall with the splen-

dour of early music at is finest. In partnership with Early

Music Vancouver.

Edmar Castañeda, harpDafnis Prieto, percussion

“When I saw Edmar and Dafnis literally burn up the stage at the Banff Centre Jazz Festival, I knew it was something I had to share with Vancouver audiences.”—barry shiffman

Forget what you think you know about the harp. To hear

Columbian virtuoso Edmar Castañeda simultaneously deliver

stunning melody, innovative jazz harmonies and complex

rhythms, one can’t help but be in awe. Since his move to the

United States in 1994, Castañeda has taken New York and the

world stage by storm revolutionizing the way audiences and

critics alike consider the harp. A master at realizing beautiful

complexities of time while skillfully drawing out lush colours

and dynamic spirit, the New York Times characterized

Castañeda as “almost a world unto himself.”

Cuban jazz percussionist Dafnis Prieto has been described

as easily the most impressive young drummer to come on the

jazz scene during the past decade. With dazzling technical

abilities that electrify audiences, Prieto is a classically trained

musician who absorbed from an early age the multifaceted

percussive traditions of his native Cuba. He is known for

transposing elements from his Afro-Cuban musical heritage

onto a jazz drum kit, incorporating congas, timbales, and

the layered rhythmic patterns of rumba and son.

“A sound that has just about everything one wants from a quartet....” —new york times

Alex Ross of The New Yorker magazine writes, “the

St. Lawrence are remarkable not simply for the quality

of their music making, exalted as it is, but for the joy they

take in the act of connection.” They are indeed experts at

connecting with each other, but also with audiences, and

none are more aware of this than those of us at Music in

the Morning.

Having just celebrated their 25th anniversary season, the

St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ) is internationally

recognized as one of the greatest ensembles of our time.

Performing in halls the world over, from Carnegie Hall

to the Barbican, the SLSQ was first presented by Music

in the Morning in 1989. It went on to win both the Banff

International String Quartet Competition and Young

Concert Artists International Auditions in 1992. Since

then, the quartet has been delighting audiences with its

spontaneous, passionate, and dynamic performances,

fulfilling its mission: to bring every piece of music to the

audience in vivid color, with pronounced communication

and teamwork, and great respect to the composer.

“Winnipeg’s musical treasure …. Her electrifying Caro Nome, with each note crafted as a multi-faceted jewel ….” — opera today

Canada’s premiere coloratura soprano Tracy Dahl has

appeared throughout her career with such opera houses

as the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston

Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Canadian Opera Company,

Teatro alla Scala (Milan) and the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris).

Her “superlative coloratura” (Globe and Mail), “deliciously

accurate, and stratospheric” (Opera), is regularly singled

out by critics.

Although this is her Music in the Morning debut, Dahl

is no stranger to the West Coast—in 2014-15 alone Dahl

performed with Pacific Opera Victoria in the title role of

Lucia di Lammermoor and in concert performances of

Candide with Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony

Orchestra. In 2009, Ms. Dahl was honoured with the Ruby

Award by Opera Canada for outstanding achievements on

stage. She received the 2012 WSO Golden Baton Award

from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and in November

2014, Women’s Executive Network’s (WXN) honoured

her as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100

Award Winners.

Stanislav Pronin is regarded as one of Canada’s most

brilliant violinists. This exciting young talent was born in

Moscow, began studying violin at the age of eight, and

made his solo debut in Israel at the age of ten.

Pianist Alexander Seredenko, also of Russian heritage,

has developed a following for his electrifying and deeply

expressive performances. He has been studying on full

scholarship at The Glenn Gould School in Toronto, where

his teacher is Music in the Morning favourite, James

Anagnoson. He has earned top prizes in numerous

competitions, and was the first Canadian to win the

Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. He is

scheduled to make his Toronto Symphony debut next

season with the Rachmaninoff 2nd Concerto.

These two exceptional artists will perform works of

Prokovief, Rachmaninoff and Piazzolla.

“It is not often that you hear such individuality as you do in [Pronin’s] playing. Outstanding technical virtuosity, very imaginative and convincing interpretation.” — leonard slatkin

Music in the Morning’s artistic director and one of Canada’s

pre-eminent musicians closes our 2015–16 season.

After making his debut with the Toronto Symphony

Orchestra at the age of fifteen, Barry Shiffman has enjoyed

a career that has included solo appearances across North

America and Europe, as well as a remarkable seventeen

years with the St. Lawrence String Quartet. A sought-after

chamber musician, he appears regularly at festivals in North

America and Europe and directs the summer programs at

The Banff Centre.

For Music in the Morning, he has chosen a generous program

that includes Bach’s Chaconne for solo violin, Cesar Franck’s

Sonata in A major, and a new work by Vancouver composer

Rodney Sharman, commissioned for these concerts by MITM.

He is joined by frequent collaborator, acclaimed pianist

Jeanie Chung. Ms. Chung is a faculty member at The Banff

Centre and a chamber music coach at The Royal Conserva-

tory of Music in Toronto.

Tuning In with

Rex Murphy

He is well known as Canada’s most opinionated man—

Canadian commentator and author, the one and only

Rex Murphy, is a familiar face and voice across Canadian

media. His intellect and biting humour strike through

the heart of profound political and social issues. Murphy

has been host of CBC’s national open-line radio program

Cross Country Checkup for almost two decades. He also

currently reports for CBC’s The National and is a weekly

columnist in The National Post.

Murphy’s style, a mix of insight, humour and political

commentary, fascinates audiences and has made him

much in demand as a speaker. But Rex Murphy is not

only a superb journalist, radio, TV and print, he is also

a passionate lover of classical music, particularly music

of the piano. In his interview with Mr. Friesen, the two

will explore the role classical music plays in Murphy’s

life and get a sense of his favourite performers and

composers. A hint: he’s a big Horowitz fan.

Tuning In with

Bramwell Tovey

Vancouver’s own Bramwell Tovey is a man of many talents.

He is a fascinatingly diverse musician, a champion of

contemporary music, a composer, and delightful raconteur.

The GRAMMY and Juno award-winning conductor/

composer was appointed Music Director of the Vancouver

Symphony Orchestra in 2000. Under his leadership the

VSO have toured to China, Korea, across Canada and the

United States. Mr. Tovey is also the Artistic Adviser of the

VSO School of Music. His tenure has included complete

symphony cycles of Beethoven, Mahler, and Brahms as

well as the establishment of an annual festival dedicated

to contemporary music. In 2018, the VSO’s centenary

year, he will become the orchestra’s Music Director

Emeritus.

Mr. Tovey is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in

London, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and

holds honorary degrees from the universities of British

Columbia, Manitoba, Kwantlen and Winnipeg. In 2013

he was appointed an honorary Officer of the Order of

Canada for his services to music.

Tuning In with

Tania MillerUsed to blazing new paths,

Maestra Tania Miller, Music

Director of the Victoria

Symphony, is the only woman

ever to lead a major Canadian

orchestra. When she steps

down from the podium at the

end of her term in August 2017,

she will have led the symphony

for 14 years.

Miller has enjoyed a diverse career conducting with

other orchestras (including the VSO with Bramwell Tovey),

festivals, chamber orchestras and even opera—her first love.

During her ongoing tenure with the Victoria Symphony,

Miller has pursued new growth, innovation and quality for

the orchestra. At the same time, she has an active guest-

conducting schedule with orchestras in North America.

As she heads in to her last year with the Victoria Symphony

Orchestra, the ensemble’s 75th anniversary season, Miller

has a worthy goal—one which Music in the Morning audi-

ences would surely endorse—“I hope to leave behind,

more than anything, a sense that music and an orchestra

in a community is imperative to a great life.”
