Dear Valued Colleague, At Avis Fleet Services we have set bold targets for growth and value creation over the next 5 years. In order to achieve those targets and guarantee a successful future, we’ve needed to relook how we effectively leverage the talent, abilities, expertise, innovation, creativity and passion that exists within our employees. With the collective wisdom of the

leadership team, we believe we have devised a model that is fresh and exciting and designed to excite and grow our most valuable asset – YOU.

The Integrated Employee Value Model, also known as the IEVM, is the vehicle through which Avis Fleet Services will be executing and delivering the strategic plans set for our business. It is only through our employees can we deliver a successful, value based product offering that is relevant and sustainable into the future.

The objective of the IEVM, is to provide the business with the framework to engage, motivate, retain and develop high performing employees. A high performing organisation will position us for success and the highly regarded title of market leader. I guess one could also say that we just want to create a great place to work for all our staff.

IEVM has been launched in Isando, with plans to roll it out to branches and regional country operations in due course.

Details of presentations in Cape Town, Durban and other locations will be sent to those employees directly.

After the initial launch, there will be a monthly roll-out of the various elements of the Employee Value Proposition in your InfraRed teams.

We look forward to using the IEVM to grow our employees, to provide an inspiring workplace, and to achieve our ambitions, both personal and corporate in the medium term.

Another Great Vehicle Delivery

By The Cape Town Team…

It was with great excitement that Amir Tal of Myertal Tactical Security recently took delivery of his company’s vehicles – an Audi A4 and three Chevrolet Utility LDVs. Myertal Tactical Security provides security services to business and corporate customers in the Western Cape and Gauteng. They have been operational in the Cape Town area since 2009 and recently expanded into Johannesburg.

They offer a niche product to the market as they utilise advanced state-of-the-art technology coupled with unique security tactics in delivering their security solution.

Myertal are regular Avis Rent-a-Car users, which is why they approached Avis Fleet Services for an FML solution. This is a brand new Customer for Avis Fleet Services. Bennie Blignaut

Once he became involved in the ANC there was no looking back. Mandela and those who were with him took many actions against the injustice of apartheid. A system where one's colour discriminated so totally against the basic laws of freedom was unthinkable (just as slavery) and yet it was a reality.

Nelson Mandela then became the leader of the ANC. They organized protests and sabotages to bring to light the inequality that was happening throughout South Africa. While Mandela had worked hard to bring about understanding and change through peaceful methods, military and government targets were bombed to get the message across.

In 1962 Nelson Mandela was arrested and sent to prison, along with many other ANC leaders. He never gave up the struggle. He wrote many books and his main place of imprisonment came to be known as a place of learning.

Imprisoned for 27 years for his opposition to apartheid, Mandela came out of prison in 1990 expressing no bitterness towards his tormentors. Instead, he championed reconciliation among South Africa's polarised races, espousing the principles of nation-building and cooperative governance.

In 1993, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which he shared with former South African president FW de Klerk.

As South Africa's first democratically elected President in 1994, Mandela tackled the challenge of uniting both the country's racial groupings and a fragmented public service whose delivery mandate was skewed in favour of the white population.

An Inspiring Leader Of South Africa

6

Nelson Mandela – His Journey & Role In Inspiring The Nation

In line with this month’s EVP theme –Inspire, we bring you the journey of one of the world’s most inspiring leaders… Nelson Mandela.

Chief among African leaders, Nelson Mandela is one of a few statesmen to have achieved almost universal respect around the world and across the political spectrum. His role in fighting apartheid, his imprisonment on Robben Island - where he came to symbolise the struggle of oppressed people around the world - and his ability to steer South Africa through the crisis of its rebirth earned him the international reputation of benevolent negotiator and quintessential peacemaker.

In the small village of Mvezo , Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. He was not born with the name Nelson, but with his African name Rolihlahla , which literally means –pulling the branch of a tree, or in its colloquial sense 'troublemaker' ( It seems Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela certainly lived up to his given name, but in the best of ways).

Rolihlahla Mandela was the first of his father's family to receive formal

schooling. It was his school teacher Miss Mdingane who gave him the

English name Nelson.

Nelson Mandela then went on to finish his Junior Certificate from a Wesleyan school and on to college where he studied for a Bachelor of Arts. Engaging in a boycott against university policies at Fort Hare he was essentially kicked out and the Nelson Mandela story moved on.

Rejecting an arranged marriage from his guardian Manela Rohililaha Nelson escaped to Johannesburg. He completed his degree through correspondence and eventually became involved in the ANC

Page 8: Code Red - 13

A significant milestone of his presidency was the exemplary constitution-making process, which delivered a document that is the envy of the democratic world.

After handing over the reigns of the presidency to Thabo Mbeki in 1999, Mandela played a key role as middleman in crisis-hit areas such as Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Besides campaigning globally for peace, Mandela focused his still prodigious energies increasingly on empowering disadvantaged children and fighting against HIV/Aids.

In June 2004, Mandela officially retired from public

life. His parting gift - a R1-billion endowment to South Africa, to be raised by the three charitable organisations that bear his name: The Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and the Nelson Mandela Rhodes Foundation.

Mandela was one of the few leaders capable of inspiring confidence both inside and outside the country. Few others would have managed to unite the disparate warring parties and steer South Africa from what seemed to be the brink of civil war. – www.southafrica.info.com & www.biography.com

Nelson Mandela continued to inspire the nation when in 2008, it was decided that there could be nothing more fitting than to celebrate Mr Mandela’s birthday each year with a day dedicated to his life’s work and that of his charitable organisations, and to ensure his legacy continues forever. Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did.

How Did You Make A Difference On Nelson Mandela Day?

Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did for more than 67 years.

The Marketing Department made a difference in the lives of the Con Amore kids by spending Nelson Mandela Day painting a mural on the wall in the sick room. The mural painted on the wall will definitely brighten up the lives of the sick kids, as well as the new duvet set & linen that was given to them along with a few other items.

Phakisaworld held an auction for 67 minutes in lieu of their approach to do something ‘meaningful’ and ‘that counts’. Each staff member brought something from home that they wanted to donate. On the day of the auction they had a total of 37 items which ranged from small items such as jewellery to larger items such as a coffee machine. Staff bid their own money on the items up for auction “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. In total

there were 35 items that were auctioned with a total of R 6 373.00 raised. Derek de La Harpe and Shawn

Govender agreed to contribute the balance so that the total figure raised from their individual contributions amounted to a grand total of R6 700.00.

All the funds raised from the auction were matched by Phakisaworld Fleet Solutions to enable them to play a more meaningful role in something that the whole business can participate in. The grand total raised was R13 400.00. They will choose an organisation, charity or contribute through these funds raised, so that their contribution will COUNT & be MEANINGFUL.

area. L-R: Chris vd Westhuizen, Chanell vd Westhuizen, Merlisha Haripersadh, Sholen Govender, Ginesh Rampersadh, Thea Lindeque

A few AFS ladies went through to Avis Rent a Car to help with their Mandela Day project which entailed assisting in painting old RAC A1 sized calendars with black board paint. The calendars once painted would be handed to disadvantaged schools in rural areas to utilise as material for writing boards in the classrooms.

Healthy Corner….. Muscle cells hold more water than fat cells. When we lose muscle or fat, the amount of body water decreases. When we gain or lose weight rapidly, the changes often result from shifts in body water, not necessarily muscle or fat.

When we gain weight in the form of fat, fat cells initially swell until they reach their maximum size. New fat cells are made after the existing cells have reached their oversized limit. When we lose weight, fat cells shrink – but their numbers stay the same. Therefore, once fat is gained and maintained it becomes difficult to lose. It’s a much better idea to prevent excessive fat-gain to begin with!

Fat needs support in the form of muscle and bone. Therefore, as you lose fat, you will inevitably lose some of the lean muscle when it’s no longer needed to support the fat. To avoid excessive loss of muscle while getting rid of body fat, lose weight at a gradual pace (0,5 -1kg per week) and maintain a good exercise programme that incorporates both cardiovascular and resistance training. – Discovery Health Magazine

What exactly do we “lose” when we lose weight? Body weight can decrease due to loss of water, fat or muscle – or all three combined. It works like this…

Water normally accounts for around 60-65% of body weight, more if its abnormally retained as a result of a salty diet or certain medications or medical conditions.

Two in one is best Inspired to live a healthier life? Then get moving and start eating well… at the same time!

A study conducted by researchers at the Standford University School of Medicine and published in the Annals of Behavioural Medicine, shows you’ll get better results if you make the changes together. If you want to change one routine at a time, start with exercise – leading with diet may interfere with getting into a regular exercise schedule, the researchers say. – Discovery Health Magazine

Facts and Tips:

11

• 15 MINUTES is all it takes (of moderate exercise each day) to increase your life expectancy by three years compared to sedentary people. Thirty minutes of exercise can add about four years to your life.

• 20 %... the amount of extra food people consume at lunchtime after skipping breakfast, compared to the days on which they had eaten a normal breakfast, according to a recent study by the MRC Clinical Science Centre at Imperial College London. Scans also showed their brains were more responsive to the high-kilojoule foods after fasting.

• Add some sautéed onion and garlic to your next batch of brown rice. Research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that the sulphur compounds present in these ingredients could increase absorption of the zinc and iron in some grains, helping you maintain a healthy metabolism and overall energy!

• Avoid adding sugars to drinks or when cooking; try alternatives such as lemon juice, mint, or a little honey. Avoid foods and drinks that list sugar as one of the first items on the ingredient breakdown – and remember that flavoured waters can be high in added sugars. – Discovery Health Magazine

Several confirmed cases of swine flu A(H1N1) In Gauteng It has been brought to our attention that several cases of the A(H1N1) virus have been confirmed within the Gauteng region. It must however, be borne in mind that confirmed cases in South Africa have been mild cases, that have been managed conservatively (no anti-viral or hospital stay).

Appropriate action has been taken with respect to business continuity planning and occupational health and safety and there is no undue cause for alarm at this stage.

Although there is no specific vaccine against the virus, there are practical counter measures from a hygiene perspective which can considerably reduce the risk of infection and transmission which advises the following:

• Individuals are advised to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water on a regular basis and should seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms of influenza-like illness. Use waterless hand gel sanitizers when soap is not available;

• Hand-washing after direct contact

with ill persons or their environment may reduce the risk of illness;

• Regarding the risk of being infected by an influenza virus, travelers are advised, whenever possible, to avoid crowded enclosed spaces and close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections;

• All persons should be encouraged to practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover your

mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and put your used tissue in a wastebasket. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands);

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth • Practice other good health habits; and • Stay at home if you have an acute febrile respiratory illness.

“Entering the Comrades Marathon last year for the first time, I went in naïve and unprepared for the challenge that lay ahead. After completing it, I vowed not to attempt it again….at least not for the next 5 years. Then I was made aware of the “Back-to-Back” medal rules. You only ever have one opportunity to get a ‘Back-To-Back’ medal – meaning once you have entered and completed your first Comrades as a novice – you have to run and complete it the very next year in order to collect the additional medal at the end. So there I was at the starting line this year, once again, undertrained – but this time filled with fear, knowing what lay ahead – the “UP RUN”. I promised myself I would run my own race at my own pace. I started at a decent pace and after 3 hours was feeling good but then reality hit – based on last year’s finish time, I knew that I had close on another 9 hours on my legs. Ouch! This year saw a record number of runners dropping out along route - it was reported that this was one of the toughest races in many years, with temperatures reaching mid 30’s by lunch time. It is scary to see strong, fit men, collapsing next to you on the road but you have to push on. After walking Polly’s, I knew I was running out of time and hitting Pietermaritzburg, supporters were shouting “you only have 4km’s to go” – a quick calculation told me I was in trouble with 40 minutes to spare. At usual marathon pace of 6 – 7 minutes a kilometre I would be

fine, but walking at over 10 minutes a kilometre meant I would miss cut off. Ultra marathon running, means having as much endurance in your mind, as on your legs. And the mind is a powerful thing…. It can make or break your race. I decided there and then, I would conquer this thing. So I started to run! And after 11h53.09 I earned both a Vic Clapham medal and a “Back to Back” medal. “– Tammy Southby AFS P.E

SARS scams and phishing attacks

14

Members of the public are randomly emailed with false “spoofed” emails made to look as if these emails were sent from SARS, but are in fact fraudulent emails aimed at enticing unsuspecting taxpayers to part with personal information such as bank account details. Examples include emails that appear to be from [email protected], or [email protected] indicating that tax payers are eligible to receive TAX refunds. These emails contain links to false forms and false websites made to look like the “real thing”, but with the aim of fooling people into entering personal information such as bank account details which the criminals then extract and use fraudulently.

Please note these are scams and SARS taxpayers should take note of the following:

• Do not open or respond to emails from unknown sources. • Beware of emails that ask for personal, tax, banking and eFiling details (login credentials, passwords, pins, credit /

debit card information, etc.) as SARS will never ask taxpayers for such information in an email. • SARS will not request your banking details through the phone, email or websites. • Beware of false sms's.

To report or to get more information on phishing, please send an email to [email protected] or call the Fraud and Anti-Corruption Hotline on 0800 00 2870.
