Dear Parents LEARNING CONVERSATION PREPARATION Last week and into this one have been busy weeks as the students sat with their pastoral teacher to decide how they would like to explain their work to you, the parents and carers, in their Learning Conversations next Term. Each student from Kindergarten to Year 6 is involved. And let me tell you, they are very aware of themselves! I listened in on discussions for a number of students and they could tell their pastoral teacher, with unbelievable accuracy, just how they are progressing at school. I heard the positives they want to celebrate and some areas where they know improvement is needed. They could articulate what is hard for them and where they could try harder. They were also very honest about behaviour, collaboration and their ability (or not) to be organised and ready to learn. Along with the capabilities report, these will be presented to parents and carers in Week 1 or 2 next Term at your Learning Conversation. During that conversation you will have a chance to discuss what the student (your child) feels and together map out the Semester 2 plan. This information will then be scanned into our system and you will receive a copy home - signed by all present. Just a note here: The Learning Conversation will happen only ONCE for each student so in cases of split families we are asking you to decide how you will manage this, bearing in mind you are coming together for the benefit of your child. To book in you will need to go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the code: 2jy5u. Find your childs Pastoral Teacher (if unsure who this is then please ask your child prior to booking) and make a time to meet with them. You will receive an email to confirm your booking. Bookings will close on Sunday, 19 July at 2pm. (In another note: Book now!!! We will not be reopening bookings for anyone.) If anything Covid-19 related impacts on this, we will change to Zoom meetings. FUN SPORTS Our Fun Sports afternoon will be held this Friday. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, parents are unable to attend. Your children will be competing in fun old-fashioned activities like tug -of-war, ball games, crazy hurdles, throwing fun and relays. As there is no Athletics Carnival this year, we decided we should all enjoy a bit of fun together. Your children may wear their House colour shirt to school on Friday! KickIt GROUPS This year we are approaching our Personal Development aspect of the curriculum differently by using vertical groups (K-6) to build the knowledge. We have given Year 6 the task of presenting the information to their small vertical group with a staff member as a support person. The lessons themselves are programmed by Mrs Seymour. Usually she then meets with the Year 6 students before KickIt groups to plan the presentations. During Covid-19 blended learning, the task of preparing some lessons was handed over to S3. They had access to the programmed lessons but were tasked with preparing their own style of presentation for their vertical group. Last Friday, the first of these lessons were presented by Year 6 with Year 5 support. We would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to our KickIt leaders for a fantastic afternoon of learning about why we need Rules & Laws in our world. This Friday, prior to our Sports afternoon, the KickIt groups will focus on SHARING. WELCOME TO OUR NEW FAMILY We will welcome the Tanzini family next week. Olive will join us in Kindergarten and Ethan in Year 2. We welcome them and their parents, Deborah and Mark, to our school. WELCOME BACK Next Term we will welcome back two staff members after long leave due to illness and extended leave. Mrs Jennifer Slattery will return for Thursdays in Stage 3 as Enrichment Tutor. Meghan Kingsford will be working Wednesday and Friday from Term 3. Mrs Nikki Wagner will be returning on Tuesday and Thursday morning to work closely with our high potential learners in Stage 2 and Stage 3. We are really grateful that both these ladies are returning to Joeys again. UNIFORM in Term 3 Everyone has had a lot of fun with hair colouring and lightning bolts cut into hair, nail polish etc. during our blended learning. When we return in Term 3 we all need to return to normal uniform expectations please. That means no trendy haircuts or hair colouring; wearing correct shoes AND SOCKS; no earrings except sleepers or studs; no jewellery. We think it is time to get back to normal uniform expectations! STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY On Friday, 3 July, we will be completing our First Aid including CPR training for all staff. There will be NO school on this day. Thank you to a number of parents who did let us know they had no concerns for this day. We are presuming now that all families have sorted care for their children for 3 July. A reminder that school does not resume until Tuesday, 21 July, for students. Staff will be completing training on Monday, 20 July. FAMILY WEEK & Our Reading, Writing & Art Festival next Term…… The school continues to plan for our very special Family Week fun next Term. For this year it is a really elongated bit of fun. We are going to focus on Reading and Writing with our students and this will form the focus of Family Day on Friday, 28 August. Put this day on your calendar. Although our family celebrations may need to be different to other years, we don’t want you to miss the fun! During the week leading up to Family Day we will have a host of activities with the focus on Reading and Writing. On the Thursday after Family Day (3 September), we will host celebrated author, Megan Daley, for a parent night in the Hall (once again subject to restrictions) and we hope everyone will come along to hear her talk on the importance of Reading for everyone. Amongst the other activities we will delve into include: Indigenous storytelling, graffiti art, fun Writing activities, chalk art for telling stories and other exciting fun. There is also a Writing competition with fabulous prizes!!! (See the back page of this newsletter for more information.) JUNIOR JOEYS - ENROL NOW Junior Joeys Enrolment weeks begin on Thursday. We are welcoming our Junior Joeys students for the first time as we begin the transition to school for 2021. The Junior Joeys students will complete an enrolment before beginning Junior Joeys and receive their Big School T-shirt. They will join us from 9-11am each Thursday. If you know of anyone contemplating enrolling their child at Joeys for 2021 please tell them to contact us really quickly. Places are limited!

Our Lady of the Rosary Alstonville & St Patrick’s Wardell Catholic Church Masses Mass is available again on site. We have now ceased the drive-through communion option. Current Covid-19 restrictions limit us to 50 people in the church at any one time. People are required to book the time they wish to attend Mass so that these limits can be managed and adhered to. Permanent and casual bookings are being taken. Please advise the parish as soon as possible if you have made a booking but are unable to attend on that day to allow your place to be made available for someone else. Please phone the parish on 66283047 or email: [email protected] to make a booking. Bookings must be made by the preceding Friday.

Weekend Mass is available in the following four time slots: Alstonville: Saturday 6pm Sunday: 8:30am (booked out) 9:30am Wardell: Sunday 5pm

Please bear in mind the following procedures when entering the church…

Sanitise your hands on entry

Record your name, address and phone number on the Record of Attendees sheet,

Maintain social distancing (1.5 metres), and

Before leaving the church, wipe down the areas you have touched with the disinfectant wipes provided by church helpers.

Stage 1 went on a 2D shape hunt and justified their reasoning.

Stage 2 used the Virtual Reality kit on Friday to explore Space and the Great Wall of China!

We all loved it.

From the Garden Club and the Environmental Group

Above: Samples of previous winning entries. (The blue bag was designed by Emily from ASPECT here in Alstonville.)

In Stage 3 we have been learning about the Gold Rush era. In this topic we watched a clip about life in the 1850s Goldfields: Sovereign Hill, Ballarat, Victoria. From there we could choose a topic from

that clip, e.g. housing, transportation, culture and more, but I chose to do clothing. In the picture it shows a lady’s dress who would have been in the Higher class. She would have been a bit lower than the others as of how many layers her dress has and has no puffy sleeves.

Learning about Hats of Faith

Kindergarten had some special visitors come to STEM last week, to teach us about different hats of faith. We learnt that many different hats are symbols of love for God. We look forward to zooming with Sister Anne next week!
